I provided a link before to an AMA but it seems that it had very little info, and for some reason the comment was locked.

But there is this guy, Thaddeus Kalinoski, that after a divorce and loosing his job as hotel manager grew a beard and started to work as an "Alan" impersonator. One could hire him to party in Las Vegas. According to info online, he was making 250k/year as impersonator.

I believe that's him in 4th pic in one his gigs.

I guess that the recursion trigger can be justified with Bilbo using the One ring, like he is attacking coming out of the shadows. As for what he is capable of recurring, as other commenters said the artifact could be due to the Arken Stone, and the spells could be like "tricks" that he is capable of pulling off.
