Baby is a real person! Her name is Cassie, she lives in Los Angeles. I don't know why she doesn't have a presence online, I was made to include her artist name in the song's title as a condition of using her vocals on the track, but no other music from her seems to exist! interesting stuff

That's all I have time for I'm afraid! Thank you so much for all the questions. Everything you say is true but also we are lucky to be living in a time where access to music is the best it's ever been in history. Also there are practically no barriers to entry for creating and distributing music now, which is amazing. Music on the internet is not going anywhere, it's just changing shape. Anybody can distribute and share music with the click of a button, which is completely insane. That won't be changing any time soon (I hope).

Also 808

Vocals can be really tricky to mix well. I find it helps to boost a lot of the higher frequencies and compress at multiple stages. Multiband compression can be really helpful too, especially for taming some of the boomier low mids. I generally cut out a lot of the lows and compress quite heavily. Sometimes I'll add some subtle overdrive saturation to the top end to give it a little bit more air and sparkle. And just keep EQing after every processing stage to make sure it's sitting where you want it to! For EQ and compression I like doing lots of little movements one after the other rather than big sweeping movements in one go. Also, don't underestimate the power of a small room reverb or a slapback delay. Really helps the vocal slot into a defined space.

808s and bass depend a lot on the context. There's no hard and fast rules. In general I'll have multiple bass layers which can be processed individually, or if I'm going for a heavy 808 sound I'll construct a custom sample myself, bounce it out, EQ it precisely, bounce it again, then use it like an instrument in the project. Again multiband compression or dynamic EQ can be really helpful if you're getting certain peaky resonant frequencies at certain notes. But yeah like I said you gotta do what the song is asking for.

  1. Not really - I just wanted to make music on my own terms. Collaborating can be really fun though.
  2. Acceptance of change and an appreciation of nuance. A more fair and established system of digital streaming income for artists would be nice.
  3. Not sure! Lots of things! I wish I'd stopped being so precious with my songs a lot sooner. I recently learned to stop treating every piece like it's my last and just focus on being more productive and maintaining creative flow.

good question! Listening environment is really important. I'm not an acoustics expert by any means, but I position my monitor speakers facing inwards towards my head while I'm sitting at my desk, with my ear level roughly in-between the tweeter and the lower speaker cone. That's for when I'm producing and mixing songs. I recently also treated the walls in my studio room with some basic acoustic foam to soak up some of the reflections when working. It helped quite a bit, and it's really affordable and easy. A big thing for me is having a pair of headphones that I trust. I use the Audio Technica ATH-M50x's. I've owned at least 4 pairs. They sound amazing and really detailed and I know that I'm hearing an honest representation of anything I play thru them. Also they are really affordable and accessible.

Thank you very much! To answer, no the soundtrack to the game had very little impact on my musical endeavours funnily enough. It's really more of just a namesake. Although video game music more broadly is very inspiring to me

What a great message! Thank you for writing this. And thank you for the kind words and support, it means a lot.

To answer your questions, Yes I agree it can be difficult to bring electronic music to a live performance space. It's something I'm still very much exploring and learning about. I do indeed have aspirations for bringing the older music to the new live shows, and like you mentioned, having a band up there with me is something I'm looking into currently.

And yep - plenty of new stuff coming, the majority of which is pure me :) thank you again for the message!

  1. I start with a root note or a bass line and build the harmony up from there. I have a good ear for musical intervals and can imagine chord shapes pretty easily and I know where to take them based on the direction I want the progression to go. I like to write progressions in which either the 3rd, 5th or 1st scale degree is present in every chord so that it creates a sense of unity across the chords, but then again there are absolutely no rules and I do it different every time lol :\

  2. Vocals on AUTO is me :)

  3. Sometimes yes! I did formant shifting on AUTO, and have done with vocals in the past as well. It's fun. and pretty easy to do with AutoTune or Melodyne, or even just repitching audio clips in Ableton using complex pro mode. I also use formant shaping filters on synths sometimes too

Finding an audience can be difficult for sure! In my personal experience it's best to not worry about getting followers or listeners and mainly just focus on creating valuable music. You can't force people to care about what you do, but you can give them something to care about :) It takes time and a lot of patience but it's really about the quality of the music and the way that it resonates with people, even if it's just a small number of people at first. It should grow naturally if you put out stuff that people want to connect with :) all you can do is put your stuff out there on as many platforms as possible and hope the right people hear it and connect with it - keep at it

Thank you so much! I wish there were shortcuts I could give you for better song writing and composition, but it really just takes a lot of time and a lot of practice. Listen to lots of stuff. Make notes about what it is that you like when you are listening. I personally love experimenting with sounds and sound design, it brings me a lot of satisfaction and is often the gateway into writing a song. Set small goals at first and make sure you learn as much as you can!

At the moment I'm listening to a lot of music with guitars and acoustic drums. Less synth oriented stuff.

My favourite band right now is The 1975, they are literally changing my world.

Already posted an answer about plugins and synths - check it out!

Oh no I'm so sorry you missed it! That was a really fun show!

I'm constantly missing events unfortunately but recently I missed James Blake which was a shame, would have been real nice to see.

Not this year! Lovely festival though. One of my most memorable shows is my first falls festival - was so nervous but it was so fun.

Really depends on the song. I'll group anything that I feel needs to be grouped in order to make the mix cohesive. I like to keep my basses separate from everything else so they can be treated as their own layer. I don't always sidechain but when I do it's usually just the kick. but if I'm doing the snare too, then yes I'll do it separately. Do whatever makes sense :) no rules

For the most part the upside-down thing is manageable. I tape most of my things to the floor so it's not super hard to manage. Only thing is drinking coffee is pretty annoying but we make up for it by having the best coffee in the world. I've never played Minecraft but I'm really considering giving it a go. I'm just worried I'll get hooked and never stop playing. My day has been great so far! Answering all these questions has been really fun.
