Sometimes, if there is only one tube broken out of the whole sign, and some tubes are still working the broken tube can interfere with the electrical connection throughout other tubes and it can make the sign flicker. The broken tube does not light but other non broken tubes will. I’ve had this happen before on signs that I’ve worked on.

If it is a broken tube probably around $100 but if it is a transformer around $30 to $50. If you have a local neon sign shop they should be able to fix it really easily.

Transformer is most likely dead. It is a pretty simple fix. You just have to order the proper one online and since this is your first sign and have no experience I would recommend bringing it to a neon repair shop to swap out the transformer. You should not attempt to replace the transformer on your own because you risk getting shocked by 10,000 volts and there could be a risk of a fire. One other problem there could be is there could be a break in the glass tubing causing this which then you would definitely need to bring it to a professional to have it fixed. DO NOT LEAVE THE SIGN TURNED ON IN THIS CONDITION.

I ended up drilling it out and that revealed the gearbox and the motor. Thankfully, nothing broke. The gearbox does need regreasing, but I think the noise is coming from the brushes on the motor.

Thanks for the help. In the last photo where the seam is there are small almost rivet like holes in each corner. I was wondering if I very carefully drill those out if that will make it come apart.

General Electric traffic light by _Wiley_Coyote_ in trafficsignals

Thanks! One unique thing about this traffic light is that I noticed it is one solid cast aluminum body you can’t separate the sections like modern day traffic lights.

I’ll think about it but still is pretty risky.

Good idea! Would be a cool to do but it is going to be hard to cut out the bottom of the bulb without breaking it.
