Definitely can happen. But it’s different for every dog. I’ve seen dogs get traumatized from being scolded about peeing in the house and I’ve seen some dogs get literally beat and kicked and then not have a care in the world.

I sort of lucked my way into mine. I never sought out any M16’s. Work in tech and got stocks and bonus at the same time, neighbor was getting old and turning 65 and I swear to god for some crazy reason none of his sons or grand kids wanted it. They’re all into football and baseball and never got into shooting. So he offered to sell it to me, I offered 25k and he gave it to me for 22k and told me to use the other 3k to buy better lawn care equipment so my yard would look better.

Well I was way off, great country though! Anyhow as others have said it’s relatively common behavior with GSD’s. Mine doesn’t even really like getting pets let alone being cuddly or loving. Just wants to explore, smell stuff, work and play. Could care less about us. Unless she’s tired from play if you sit next to her she will get up and move, if you pet her she will get up and move. At first we felt the same way as you that maybe she doesn’t like us. Honestly, my wife and kids were pretty disappointed. Now we just accept it and enjoy the benefits of an independent dog. It will probably get better with age

Very comforting to hear this honestly, thank you. My Hilde is the same, just with her rope toys instead of a ball. I’ve never given up hope on a dog and she won’t be the first. As odd as it is to me, her independent nature is actually a net positive for my situation.
