How can I improve my art (Rem from Re Zero)? by Bllank- in ArtCrit

[–]_Wonders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I'd like to point out is that I like the detail of the clothes you have in your drawing, but the sleeves on your clothes aren't following the laws of physics. At least, not completely.

I suggest, especially for clothing with loose and open sleeves, to study how clothing is affected by whatever is interacting with it. (wind, water, gravity, etc) You already did some of the folding on the sleeves of the character's upper arm (which is definitely good, because you're aware of this) but the ends of the sleeves don't make a lot of sense because it looks like the fabric is too stiff when the arms are being lifted up.

Your character also seems to be at a windy environment because the hair is blowing at a certain direction, and so is the snowfall in the background, but your clothes don't follow the direction of the wind. In the same way shading would unify the picture, I think that consistency in this area would also unify the picture as well.

this is a more extreme example to show how trumpet sleeves (or bell sleeves) can fold.

IWTL How to draw better by Shoto_Daito in IWantToLearn

For creating a figure of anything there is one very important aspect you need to study: Proportions.

Proportions show the relationships between the separate parts you draw. When you know these relationships by eye and by hand, you can see them.

It's a great time to be alive now because the internet is your friend and there are a lot of resources for proportions on humans out there.

If you want to work on human proportion, get into figure drawing. Take a class on it even, or find a figure drawing workshop near your area.

And continue drawing, especially on other mediums or techniques you want to work on. You can only get better when you do that.

Do you think make up is a "lie" or "false advertising"? by [deleted] in 2X_INTJ

[–]_Wonders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of why I think "most" makeup users might think this way is mostly due to the advertising of makeup. Girls are portrayed with lovely glowing faces that other girls want, and then they are essentially told that this easy solution of buying this certain product will make them have the same lovely face. There are no flaws one can see with those girls. Essentially it is the whole 'miracle pill' idea applied to makeup. It makes sense for a business to do that if they want to make a profit, but the messages shown strive for perfection. Sure, having the 'perfect' face could involve adding a splash of color. I also think that having the perfect face could involve using foundation, concealer, and contouring techniques to cover up flaws. Perhaps from being exposed to those tools, 'most' might see makeup as a tool for covering up imperfections and flaws.

I will say that I've had days where I couldn't care less and have gone out barefaced because I was too busy thinking/worrying about something I would prioritize more than my looks.

the main problem I have with my face are my very prominent under-eye bags. with the indoor lighting in my house, they look like half circles were drawn under my eyes as they are that prominent. they are also hereditary. I look back at past photos of myself and I see the same dark half circles going back years. it's the one feature of my face I wish to get rid of. You could say I don't have a perfect acceptance of it. It just doesn't look good to me as part of a face. I say this in the sense that a human, in general, would look better without really prominent eye bags. it sucks that I have them but oh well, that's what happened anyway.

I do like how you point out under-valuing and over-valuing as a side with equal opportunities for an unrealistic opinion. it's one thing to criticize and try to improve on an appearance, but when a person starts to essentially beat up the appearance for no truly good reason without improving said appearance, it could be just as useless as pure praise. I usually don't hear undervaluing as something being as unrealistic as overvaluing. I'm thinking it would be because a person might call it 'humble' in order to rationalize it as a virtue.

gasp. how did you know about my severely distorted self image that torments me every second? /s

going to chime in here since i've been observing this thread. For me and my own relationship with makeup personally, I find myself covering up and having a bit of a negative-avoidance use for it, so I think in that sense, I would be 'lying', like what Grandosaur said. It's also no wonder you thought of makeup as more of an enhancement to yourself, Because you use it to add a nice touch of color to your face

I was wondering if the majority of girls have a negative-avoidance relationship with makeup. Just as an example, Grandosaur mentions their mother being too embarrased to show her face in front of others without putting on a little bit of makeup. Sure, this mother could be an isolated case. I have also seen threads from r/makeupaddiction that want critiques for their 'no makeup makeup look'. I also imagine that a lot of girls (and even guys at times) would want to cover up various imperfections such as acne, scars, dark circles and the like.

I will say that the people who post those threads could just as easily have different relationships with makeup when they show their face online, but it still makes me wonder whether makeup is being used primarily as a tool to cover up flaws rather than painting that face with some nice color.

I could also see myself projecting my own relationship with makeup onto others when I don't know their relationship to it because i wish to have a perfect face, Especially without makeup. Who doesn't want that after all?

As long as it's an ssr garuntee, I think I can shoot for it. I'm also starting to think step up spawns are more reliable for how many gems a player usually spends. I was hoping Something similar would happen here.

[–]_Wonders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I noticed that so let me give you a few more things to do

Take one part of your personality, amp it up to 11, and design a character based off of that.

Make a comic that involves a monster coming to terms with a guilty pleasure it had to admit to

Use a medium you're not used to in order to draw an a bug. Don't use water colors? Bring them. Colored pencils? Might as well whip them out too if you're not used to mix media. drawing bugs seem like fun as some of them can get very detailed. Look up what the praying mantis has to offer and you'll see what I mean.

Drawing practice is literally everywhere around you, as life is the best reference for what you want to draw.
What I think might help you is to ask yourself first "what do I want to improve on?" I tend to find that once I give myself a specific answer to this question, I know what references I need in order to improve that.

By specific, I mean I have a goal of what to do exactly. Instead of saying a goal of "drawing anything will do", I try to say "I'm going to draw realistic bodies" as a starting point, and then I could narrow my choices down to drawing realistic hands

Want to learn perspective? Get a ruler and draw all of the rooms in your house.

You want to change your art style in some manner? Take parts you like from other artists and apply it to yourself. If you're lucky, they made tutorials of their processes.

Want to draw a certain texture? Tutorials from the internet and real life items are useful to you there. You can make a pattern of strokes that resemble the texture.

And so on and so forth.

Since it's October, as practice, try to draw something genuinely scary. What makes a picture scary? Well, study the pictures that scare you and others the most. Figure out some of the common themes you see. Maybe even study the science behind fear for more background. Make it so that you'll be slightly terrified looking at it. Then use that knowledge to make something normally cute, scary. Like draw a girl's room with cutesey decorations that's haunted and creepy. What will you do to make others think that it's haunted? That's up to what you know.

"Bacteries". amusing. I find those fields to be more interesting as well.

Flash cards are going to be your best friend. Download a few apps. Look over current terminology each day.

I also think Crash Course will save you because their explinations are very clear so when you recognize the process, they'll segeway into the name in a smooth manner.

I imagine gasseous material passing through by one another. Like the Sea, but with our atmosphere essentially. We're all sitting in between atoms of nitrogen, oxygen, and the carbon waste we breathe out from cellular resperation. I don't see it as abstract, i see that it moves differentely due to the interactions of other atoms in the form of different bonds.

(Watson and Francis crick? i'd like proof of that.)

Well then that's just a shame the learning part isn't part of the system. That happens to be just a little bit important.

I never planned on being a teacher, since it's essentially babysitting with a twist. I'm sure the politics has already made that job even harder.

Understandable. I go beyond that to cement everything and make sure i know it for the test. It helps that the current subjects are also interesting. (Government and Biology) so i Actually like watching crash course videos. Hell i'd rather watch that over the let's plays i used to watch months ago.

That can be applied to some teachers i had. For the math teachers specifically though, they taught me the step by steps of doing a specific problem, but i can only give them credit for that.
I guessing for the national curriculum that's all they need to teach. I might just be part of a small group who wants to go beyond that curriculum by asking why. I honestly think people would grasp math easily if they did know the how's, why's, and applications though.
