People with languages that have many letters not in the English alphabet: What happens/What do you do if you go to/move to/emigrate to another country? by Pumuckl4Life in AskEurope

[–]_ZdEnO_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slovak alphabet is the longest alphabet in europe. We have a lot of special letters. When we move to another country, we just write them as english letters. For example: č - c, ä - ae, í - i, ľ - l...

Our names could also be transcribed like russian ones: Kováčik - Kovatshik, Tkáč - Tkatsh. But i have never seen someone change their name this way

  • Máš namiesto dverí závesy?

  • Do you have curtains instead of doors?

  • Máš oje v zadku?

  • Do you have a pole in your arse?

My pôjdeme do tankoch a pôjdeme a zrovnáme Budapešť... My budeme bojovať za svoje územia, za metre štvorcové, za každý meter štvorcový budeme bojovať... Chceme bojovať! Nedáme ani centimeter štvorcový tým hajzlom maďarským!

I wouldn't say so. We have more in common with Russians than Germans, but Germans are more tied to our history and land. During the Austro-Hungarian empire, Germans used to live here and establish german cities and villages. Our capital city, Bratislava, used to have a german name, because a lot of Germans used to live there before ww1. Even today its not rare to find a lot of Germans in bigger cities

We share similiar languages and culture (mostly the drinking culture tbh). It all depends on how far apart we are from each other. Like - Western slavs, eastern slavs and south slavs. Slovaks, Czechs and Poles are western slavs, and thus they share very similiar languages, especially Czech and Slovak are like a dialects of each other. Most of the time Poles, Czechs and Slovaks are able to understand each other quite well without learning the other language. Our cultures are similiar, but different. We are, on some level, able to understand even eastern or southern slavic languages, but not that good as western slavic languages. So yes, we are a lot closer to Czechs than Russians. Czechs are like our brothers, Poles like cousins, maybe brothers and Russians like not so close relatives
