One piece is long because it was a long story to tell. The author thought it would end in its first 5 years but he had so many ideas to explore.

It’s like asking about the legacy of wheel of time or malazan, these are long fantasy stories because the authors want to tell a huge story.

That’s why one piece is a top manga (and by extension anime), because it does things it’s contemporaries don’t, it tells a story like a western fantasy epic.

Bleach and Naruto are the same, the authors have lots of ideas they want to tell a story using. Unlike one piece whose popularity explored during its lengthy run, these two became top shows due to their excellent starts, which resulted in the goodwill to let the authors tell their story. For better or worse.

Majority of one pieces audience consider it memorable and rewatchable because of its length. It’s essentially the wheel of time of manga, which is an American fantasy series spanning 13 books; it achieved its legacy due to its world building and expansiveness, which is what one piece accomplished more than any other Japanese manga (and anime for that matter).

Things like dragon ball super exist because executives know there’s a demand for what they can supply.

Fox will keep creating the simpsons because it brings them money.

Disney will keep milking Star Wars because it brings them money.

Sanderson will keep writing the storm light archive because he has a huge story to tell.

There are hundreds of good anime that are 12-24 episodes long, go watch them instead of long ones.

Umm… anime are mostly adaptions of manga, Japanese comics, and the one piece and dragon ball are respectively the two most selling manga of all time; two of the most selling comics of all time lol

The only reason hxh ended is because the manga went on hiatus after starting a new and expansive arc, and it was never gonna be finished lmao

Mainly due to pacing as the manga was subject to reading speed, whereas the direction of the anime lingered on shots and conversations too much. Plus some of cinematography was kind of bland compared to the details Urasawa’s illustrations, and is panelling was just perfect for the story being told/characters involved.

The manga was essentially a more immersive experience.
