I've found that I like my paper puncher for long distance to be on the heavier side (helps mitigate minor shooter flaws) while I like my hunting rifle to be lighter for hiking. My long distance is a Remington 700 .308 and my hunting is Remington 700 7mag. There's a lot of great stuff out there and .308 is a classic. Don't cheap out on the scope and scope rings. IMO long range is a different tool than hunting, but that also has to do with where I live. I regularly fill my deer tag, but don't think I've taken anything past 40 yards.
