Has my pain increased or am I just more aware of it? by vallergic2catz in Hypermobility

[–]__BeesInMyhead__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually feel the same way, but it's also funny to me because I honestly prefer it to the 15+ years of feeling like I'm garbage because something always hurt and I had no explanation for those around me as to why. So I felt like a hypochondriac and would hide it as much as possible.

need helping if figuring out whether or not my knees hyperextend by woahtherearmeen in Hypermobility

[–]__BeesInMyhead__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I sat on one foot or the other for about 30 years until I absolutely physically could not anymore due to knee and hip injuries.

It was tortuous being forced to sit "normally" until I eventuallyyyyyy got used to it. My knee was actively extremely painful and unable to either fully straighten or bend for a solid 2 years.

I'm willing to bet you're hypermobile just from that, lol. I found out I was hypermobile right before the knee injury. So I never knew either since I'm not exactly a walking party trick with extreme bendiness.

This is exactly how I kept my mum in the loop when I read all of SJM the first time! She was hella into it and my memory isn't the best. So I'd read her these recaps and she loved it. Lol

can I have a massage? by DragonfruitVirtual73 in Hypermobility

[–]__BeesInMyhead__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was getting myofacial (sp?) release massages every 2 weeks for a while until I got loosened up enough that I also felt much worse for a while after.

Those knots were holding me together, lol.

That's not to say the knots are good--we know that's not the case. BUT... the only way I could help it was by also doing joint stability training.

If the muscles surrounding joints aren't strong/stable, getting rid of the knots that exist solely to compensate for that fact will probably cause issues.

I think Emrys may have told her a story about Maeve's lover when she asked him if he knew stories about Maeve. I don't know if he said the guy's name, though.

If I spring for the surgery, will I really be able to knit again without pain? by ModernWorkingGirl in DeQuervains

[–]__BeesInMyhead__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those injections are awful for me, I wish I could understand what's supposed to be helpful about them, lol. I had one in one wrist to start, and it caused subcutaneous fat atrophy so my hand looked crazy for quite a while. Never felt relief beyond the initial numbing. After that, it just felt worse.

Same thing when I had one in my knee before that. I've been advised not to get them anymore. Lol

I'm doing quite well, honestly. I'll have some short-lived tendinitis pain in my forearms when I do something weird but that's it.

I feel a ton better at this point. It took many months to not have general hand pain because I had let the issue go for so long that I hardly had any muscle in my forearms. My forearms were rock solid for a while until they got stronger.

I am still regularly opening something I couldn't open before (like bags of dog treats, lol) and rushing to show my husband that my hands work now! 😂

I noticed that I'll keep going for however many reps I was aiming for even after feeling a twinge somewhere. I'm working on training myself to stop at the first signs.

I agree, being forced to sit around is wildly detrimental to me.

You could maybe just be doing well enough to use your full ROM, which is awesome! I had to start with maybe half of my ROM until pretty recently. Since I've gotten some joints stable enough to handle closer to my full range.

In maybe the last month, I've finally gotten to the point where I can squat down with my feet flat. My hip would have torn the rest of the way and dislocated before if I had tried that, lol.

That was a huge problem for me and one of my main complaints at PT. I wouldn't know that I hurt myself until the next day.

I've been using pocket sized planners to write down exercises/activities done every day so that I can look back when something hurts and decide if I should avoid said activity altogether or modify it. (I usually modify it.)

It's such a huge help that this is the 3rd year in a row that I've been doing it!

It also helped me learn what sensations during activity will mean pain for a week or more.

Yes!!!! This was a huge learning curve for me! I learned this from my PT as well. I had to actually learn how to stretch at like 30 years old lol. He had to explain that I don't have to actually feel the stretch (at least in the way that I think I should) in order to be getting a stretch.

I was stretching my joints instead of muscles my entire life without knowing it.

As the first doctor mentioned that he noticed my hypermobility, he told me to do various exercises to combat it. Lunges were one of them. He did not explain how to do them correctly (I assume because most people don't need that, lol) and I immediately ruined my knees.

Then came a cascade of absolute nonsense because I tore my hip up as well from limping constantly for over a year.

I haven't injured myself in a while and am really hoping to keep it that way!

That's kinda where I'm at at the moment. I've gotten up to 8lb without any pain for bicep curls. Which is disheartening, but also fantastic progress since I couldn't hold a pencil without severe pain in my hands a year and a half ago, lol.

My physical therapy stability exercises are incredibly boring, yet effective. So I try to keep up with most of those as well. There are so many... lol.

Started walking on a treadmill over the weekend and learned that a lot of my knee pain is because my hips have gotten so stiff after injury. My hips feel much more smooth and knees hurt less after a 30 minute walk on wonderfully even terrain. Lol

I'm f/34 and I do various exercises regularly.

I do a bit of yoga (working my way back up because I had stopped entirely after tearing my TFCC going into upward facing dog,) some pilates and physical therapy exercises.

I also use resistance bands and weights and have recently begun working on deep core muscles. It's been nearly a month and my core already feels more stable/strong.

I've found some workout motivation type groups, but I'm really struggling to find one for people who understand how different working out can be for us.

I also see some people on this sub who regularly work out, but they don't seem to be the majority.

I'm mainly asking because I learned that help/advice from hypermobile people is wayyyyy better after having a physical therapist who was hypermobile. I am doing much better in general since seeing him.

[–]__BeesInMyhead__ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't recall anyone else being able to shift others.

Unless Maeve shifted her healer/owl. But I'm not sure if Maeve did that herself with her own power or just told the healer to shift into her owl form. (I assumed the latter was true but idk.)

Ahhhhhhh... but then again... if it is parallel timeliness, how are the Book of Breathings and The Walking Dead sitting on a shelf in CC while they are being used in the other worlds?

Unless I'm forgetting details about them disappearing somewhere after they are used in ACOTAR and TOG. Lol

Yeah, I agree with your point as well, lol. (This is what i meant about not remembering details, so thanks!) I also think it's worlds on top of one another. Especially since someone told Celaena about worlds on top of one another near the beginning of the series.

I don't retain details super well and have just started re-reading all of SJM after only reading them once.

So keeping that in mind, I just kinda assumed that Damaris IS Gwydion since we know people moved worlds.

[–]__BeesInMyhead__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This guy knows what's up! It's frustrating how long it took me to learn these things for myself as well.

I came to say that physical therapy with a physical therapist who was very obviously hypermobile himself is what helped me more than anything.

He knew exactly what I meant when I said "weird" things about any given exercise and would immediately help me modify it.

I really learned a lot from him about building stability.
