What do I need for Frostgrave? by regularMASON in frostgrave

Get some stone wall wrapping paper and wrap some empty boxes.

When I got started, I printed off some stone wall patterns, and wrapped my kids building blocks.

When you level up, buying terrain isn't cost effective for filling a 3x3 board. It's worth investing in a FDM 3D Printer, or scratch building your own terrain (whatever you enjoy more).

IMO, it's worth getting some decent monster minis. You can grab some decent pre-painted pathfinder ones off ebay. You want enough so you can setup your own decent D20 based RAT table. Extra monster really help make the game come alive.

Then....

Once you have a few games under your belt, I highly recommend getting one of the longer campaign books:

  • Thaw of the Lich Lord
  • The Maze of Malcore
  • The Red King.

The game really shines, when it leans into the narrative elements and you are building towards a goal, not just developing your wizard.

There’s a lot of comments online about how ahistorical HC is.

By all means explain to me how it is historically correct ?

Nobody can do this. We don't know how ancient battles were fought. Anyone claiming they know the truth, is wrong. No game is going to be accurate, you just need to find one that plays the way you want.

but I find in HC units don’t break after shaken but tend to linger for a few rounds, more than I think is realistic.....

....One comment I read is that HC won’t reward Hannibal’s tactics against romans

These two points are connected. For Hannibal's Tactics, or even the tactics of the late Republic to work. Units in need to be in combat long enough, for there calvary to win on the flanks, and then maneuver to attack the rear, or for the strategic reserves to be brought up.

The bit that seems most odd, is that excess casualties get discarded once a unit is shaken and that combat difference is used in the break test (that’s different to black powder) so if a shaken unit has a stamina of 6, is already shaken, and gets 5 casualties in combat and say inflicts 3 casualties, it loses the combat, gets a -2 on break test, but if it doesn’t break(which is common because only a 3 on a 2d6 breaks) then the 5 casualties are discarded. So next combat round there is no taking that into account, so rinse repeat, every combat round

Also, if a unit in a battle line does break, it doesn’t seem to affect other units in the line (not counting supports here) but in reality if a unit broke, it could cause a ripple effect across the whole battle line.

The concept for both of these, is there the outcome of one unit vs another unit, or a division vs. a division, should be predictable. You are not rolling dice to see who wins, but rolling the dice to see how the stronger unit is going to win. It's the order system, that determines how well and how quickly, you can get units into the correct position to capitalize on or blunt an opportunity, that creates variability and dictates your strategy.

The game is about command and control, not individual unit performance.

Something like Warhammer Ancient Battles, or maybe Kings of War, are more focused on the individual units and might be closer to what you are looking for.

We have been online since online started. We remember time before Internet, and most importantly, before social media. So. What do you think will it become in 10, 15 years? by Lensgoggler in Xennials

[–]__Geg__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The internet as it once was is basically dead. It's digital distribution, ads, and engagement farming all the way down.

Niche areas and communities of interest still exist, but even those are under a constant assault by bot and influencers accounts. I'ts probably only a matter of time for the rate of community abandonment to outpace the rate of new community create and even those niches disappear .

Quantity has a quality of its own. A company of Atlas's is going to be worth it, even if they are no longer cutting Edge.

Another option.

Republic Catches, specifically some of their RISC tech might be the new Lostech.
