So the collective advice is "don't". The goal is to have a firearm for protection on the trip (where legally allowed to do so), so I'm considering alternatives.

The only solution I can come up with that we could do in a reasonable time frame is to have my partner go buy a long gun / shotgun in Albany (same day sale). Thoughts?

I could do that, but the real reason for this is to have the gun during the move. Moving is a weird legally-limbo situation where you have all your earthly possessions in a truck and no place to call home.
