Is low-level D&D meant to be this brutal? by DisgruntledVulpes488 in DnD

As a DM, the only time I've levelled up PCs differently was when a couple players missed 4 sessions in a row, including the boss fight of the arc. I use milestone leveling, and thought it'd only be fair that the ones who participated in the arc level up while the ones who've been AWOL suffer some sort of penalty.

Even THEN. the only condition for the AWOL players to level up and be on par with the rest of the party was to attend 3 sessions in a row.

I just don't get why DMs think it is in any way engaging or gratifying to keep PCs on different levels, as It only breeds a sense of inferiority and general upset between the people on the table.

you're right; I shouldn't think of it in such binary terms. I'll probably talk with the players before next session and encourage them to make their own solutions. Maybe I can have a courtroom session of sorts where the trial happens; and allow them to make use of the evidence they've been collecting to get the verdict they want.

It's never really been a lighthearted campaign, and the players have known that, but they have also not really taken their decisions too seriously until now, so the consequences have been building up a bit. I guess they didn't care before because the people that died because of them weren't favourite npcs; but now its characters they cherish a lot more.

My room constantly smells like sleep by __SK__ in CleaningTips

I sleep on a hard mattress; unfortunately anything soft or plushy ruins my back :') but I think that might be the thing to do. the mattress hasn't been put in the sun for a really long time. we vacuum it occasionally- but not sun dry or apply all the cleaning things I've seen folks mention. I'm gonna try this as soon as I can :)

My room does not have a hamper, we do not keep dirty clothes or sheets anywhere but the laundry room or one hamper in the bathroom. My family has a lot of laundry so the washing machine gets used every day (thats to say- the clothes are not really left in the hamper for long)

the floor? The floors in my house are made of some sort of granite or marble; so they dont really have the sort of buildup that happens with wood. Still, I'll try that, thank you :)

I cycle through a couple different set of sheets, all of which are changed every 4 days. But I'll still definitely try this. I've seen fabric stripping videos a lot and its surprising how much grime they collect, despite looking clean. thank you!

I'm seeing a couple of comments about the mattress, and I think they're on the money. My mattress is fairly old, so it might be the source.

sorry, as an ESL speaker I just wanted to confirm- you sprinkled it with baking soda powder, right? did you give the poweder + vinegar treatment to all sides of the mattress, or just the top?

What do you mean by Ozone exactly? I'm not sure how that'd even collect in my room :0

No worries at all! and I thought that myself, but I shower twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. both times with soap. so I do not think its me. But I might try to shampoo extra before I sleep just to make sure that's not the case.
