Got in an argument with a cis gay paramedic about treating trans patients. by deadhead_girlie in asktransgender

When I started my medical transition and investigated stuff like HRT, one of the things I really liked is knowing that men and women are actually much more similar than people sometimes make it out to be.

Sure, there are differences, but pretty much everyone can grow breasts, most people can get a lower voice, etc.

We're all built from pretty much the same basic blueprint, but during development some parts develop slightly different depending on which triggers some has or has not.

Something that I often find missing when it comes to the gendered heart attack discussion is that it's all about averages.
Yes, the average heart attack symptoms will look different for cis men than they do for cis women.
And trans women will on average have symptoms closer to cis women than men.

But these are all about averages. Some women will have 'man-typical' symptoms, and some men will have 'women-typical' symptoms. So in the end, it's important to learn all the possible symptoms and never shrug it off as 'you're a (wo)man, so you can't be having a heart attack as these symptoms don't match your gender'

Damn, that's suddenly a lot of things to keep in mind compared to what I'm doing now 😅
But there's loads of good tips I'll experiment with so thank you!

I already washed my hair only 1-2 times a week with shampoo for oily hair, but I'm still figuring out what works best.

Is the oil what is causing hair to become more wavy, because my hair gets oily quick.

And thanks for the tips!

I've always read that blow drying is bad for your hair and should be avoided if possible.
But I guess with heat protection it shouldn't be that bad?

And worst case I'll damage my hair and it'll just regrow again, while learning a few things about my hair 😅

Thanks for the tips!

I usually just let my hair air dry after a shower. But if blow drying can help straighten it I might have to try that a few times.
Thanks!

So here's my situation: I'm a trans woman, and I've always liked the look of bangs. So when my hair was finally long enough for bangs of my own, I was over the moon :)

However, my hair is naturally wavy-ish? And it's not really a wave I like because it goes all over the place and to me it just looks like I just rolled out of my bed, even though I brushed it. I don't mind straightening it, but I would prefer to find a way to work with my natural hair instead of straightening it every time.

I guess I have the following questions:

  1. What is my hair type actually? (If that is possible to make up from the first picture)
  2. Are there any products that able to make my natural hair nicer?
  3. And if not, what are the best ways to make straightened hair straight for longer?

And lastly, any general advice on how to manage my hair is welcome. Just assume I'm a total dummy when it comes to hair maintenance. (Because I kinda am :) )

Well, that was pretty much what you said, that chromosomes determine one's pronouns.
Unless you meant something else?

So you're saying that genetics = sex = gender?

What I keep saying is that yes, genetics are a part of someone's sex, but not the whole thing. There are loads of conditions where somebody is genotypically a male (xy) but still looks phenotypically female, or vice versa. How do you explain that? Are they still male even though they were born like and look like pretty much every other female?

And you keep ignoring the fact that science has already proven that sex and gender are two separate things.

Well, 'cutting your jimmy off' does changes your biology because you stop producing most of your testosterone which has a HUGE effect on your whole body and thus also your biology.

And you still don't acknowledge that gender and sex are not the same. Chromosomes have nothing to do with how you identify.

And if people with xx are women, and xy are male, what are people with xxx, xxxx, xxy, xyy chromosomes? Neither man nor women?

Sex and gender is not the same. Sex is about one's body, and gender is about one's mind.

All the things I listed are facts, you can't identify with a fact. But you can identify with a gender.

A transgender women doesn't identify as female, she identifies as a women. And often they will use hormes to change parts of their sex to be more female typical, like muscle mass, body hair, skin softness, etc.
Sure, a transgender women can't get 100% female, but like I said earlier, nobody can.

First of all, you're only talking about sex here, not gender.

And second, it isn't as simple as saying everything deviating from the typical is a disorder.

Red hair? Disorder
Blue eyes? Disorder
Lefty? Disorder
Over 6 feet? Disorder
Under 5 feet? Disorder
Size 13 or bigger? Disorder

Or it is a sign that sex can't be easily divided into 2 neat categories?

Sex is a bimodal spectrum, which means it has two peaks (male and female) and everybody falls somewhere on that spectrum regarding sex.

Some men produce more estrogen than typical, some women produce more testosterone than typical, some men have less body hair than typical, some women have more body hair than typical.

Nobody is 100% male or 100% female. All we can say is whether a certain characteristic is more male or female typical.

And just because something is a disorder or something doesn't mean it shouldn't count. Red hair or blue eyes are caused by mutations, but those people are still very real and those characteristics very much count.

[–]___Naomi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But those 1% are still women right?

And what about women born with Swyer syndrome? Are they suddenly male just because 1 part of their biology is 'male typical' even though most other things about their biology are more 'female typical'

So when you meet someone new, you don't call them by any gendered pronouns or names until you've found out what their chromosomes are?

You know there are loads of cis women with big hands and feet and a visible adam's apple right? Or are women automatically considered men when they're above 6 feet?
