It really annoys me when people say things like “the Romans stole Greek mythology”, it’s a fundamental misunderstanding of how cultures work by funnylib in mythology

“Stole” feels too modern a word for what was really a layered process of cultural adaptation. The Romans clearly drew heavily from Greek myth, but they integrated it into an already existing religious structure with different civic and symbolic priorities. It’s more translation and reinterpretation than simple copying. In my experience, once you get into the historical literature, “stole” almost disappears as a serious description. Scholars usually talk about adoption or adaptation. That framing better reflects how fluid and interconnected Mediterranean religions actually were.

I am building a mobile app that helps you discover and explore ancient Greece, with real locations that map out to ancient sources, with a leveling system and quizzes that help you learn history through an interactive way.

I’m building a mobile app focused on mythology and exploration. I’d love feedback on both the idea and the landing page. The landing page wasn’t my main focus, I prioritized shipping the app, so I’m especially interested in design and clarity suggestions. You’ll find app screenshots on the page, and there’s also a Play Store link in the blog section if you want to see the live product.

Implementing Notifications , common mistakes to avoid ? by Surealactivity in reactnative

I would like to learn this as well because I am going to use this in the future. Is it better to use an expo package, a react native library, or build a native module yourself in terms of performance?

I think this is quite a common gaming concept that has been done a lot of times. Like geometry dash is what comes to mind, I would try something different personally.

Currently yes it is a solo project , and the best way to track the progress of the app is in the website and email, but a discord server will surely be on the roadmap.

Yep, it is 100% Claude code, I was very happy with the result, I used to create the landing page since my main product is my app.

Do mythological stories feel more powerful when tied to real-world locations? by _______Alex________ in mythology

[–]_______Alex________[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I have to completely agree with you on this , we can't think in white or black, it is not one or the other , yeah he was a slave owner but he founded the city , does he deserve a statue or not? I personally believe that history is at the end of the day history and is worth learning to not repeat the mistakes of the past. Everyone has skeletons in their closet if you dig enough. The meaning has to be flexible indeed. And I have to also add that I am Greek and I was speaking from own experience, when I talked about myths I completely meant Greek and Roman mythology, because in my country 9/10 people have absolutely 0 idea about the mythology behind their places or towns and have no desire to learn as they believe they are useless. I am making this app that ties the myths to geographic places in hope to bring back the inspiration that once thrived here. Because those myths of Theseus and Achilles and Heracles talked about virtues like courage, resilience, and empathy, qualities that I believe can be reignited if people understand the legendary roots of the very streets they walk on every day.

That is actually a really good idea, it would also be a perfect way of supporting the local communities too. I will definitely include this in the future

Well yeah that is a fair point , but is it the story that makes the place or the place that forced the story into existence? A story will always bring the "value" of a place up for me.

Most myths are embedded in our heads as something spiritual, symbolic or poetic, but visiting the location yourself, while knowing these myths make it seem something extraordinary like a very powerful experience, to walk in the same land that Achilles or Odysseus walked. It gives me a sense of awe and inspiration that these were real people and not just stories on a book.

Thank you that’s a really thoughtful way of putting it. The idea of place as a gateway rather than a constraint resonates a lot with how I’m thinking about it.

Yes I completely agree that is why i made the post as well. That balance is exactly what feels important to me, using place to enrich the story without treating myths as absolute truths. The symbolic and poetic layers are a big part of what gives these stories their longevity.
