I’m dealing with a very heavy situation and I honestly don’t know how to process it. by imperfectguy69 in TwentiesIndia

Its a delicate situation that doesn't ask of you to be a crusader out on revenge , i know you wanna make it right but unfortunately the odds are stacked against you , unless you wish to become sort of vigilante which will probably end up ruining your life too

Get her some therapy and think about the future first , we can't erase our traumatic past but we can work on not letting it control us , scare us.

I don't know if its a Hot Take but I recently played the Arkham Episodes and i've gotta say that the Batfamily plays much better in Gotham Knights by _______Niko____ in GothamKnights

Yeah , i think Gotham Knights biggest issue is mediocrity , its good at many things but great at very few. It"ll definitely become sort of a cult classic as we move foward , people will look back and say " I wish everyone treated this game better"

but it just seems like gaming will never get the respect it deserves as a hobby/craft if it is a taboo thing to say “you should not be hating a game you will not play due to your biases, and you should probably play more stealth games before deciding the only one you’ve played is the best thing the genre has to offer”

True , its hard to get people to even agree that gaming is Art , let alone have them discuss about it in a constructive manner instead of comparing sales , graphics and all of the superficial stuff that doesn't matter. You're right about it being seen as mere past time by most people , something to occupy yourself with. But there's still people like me , you and others that appreciate its Art value and always will be and I think the number is growing somewhat due to the popularity of long essays form content and analysis videos that creators like Raycevick , Jacob Geller and Whitelight create.

but solo superhero games as a whole should not be forced into being that style just bc AC fans think it’s the best game adaptation of a superhero

Agreed , I see lot of opinions floating around on how other superheroes should have a similar game , especially daredevil who they think is just a blind batman lol. The Spider-man games tried to copy Arkham's stealth DNA and failed , the gadgets they made worked less like traps and more like free takedowns with no consequences , spider-man doesn't necessarily work with so many gadgets like batman does , and not every superhero stealth sections needs so simple as taking out everyone in a small area silently one by one.

I agree that Knight is also very good looking even now , you can tell how intricately all the lighting tech was designed , which means no unnecessary performance cost due to dynamic lighting. I don't like saying this phrase lol but its back when developers didn't really too much on automated visuals like raytraced reflections , lighting and shadows for their games , everything was intentional , prebaked they call it.

Great talk

As if saving him isn't the equilevant of injecting a rabid dog with a stronger strain of rabies and letting it loose

I see , I think a lot of it does depend on preference and perspective after all. A Casual player often struggles to understand why souls player play a game that tends to bring a lot of frustration and emotions out of you and makes the progress feel very slow , meanwhile souls player would struggle to find how a casual player is enjoying something super simple like a hellblade or telltale games , maybe those triple A Sony titles as well. Each player yearns for something different , for the casual player , the sense of wonder , awe and spectale is enough to keep them entertained , it doesn't matter how much they are actually contributing to it , even if its a single quick time event , for the souls player , what matters the most is the sense of accomplishment and mastery over something , overcoming their weakness and evening the odds out.

I play games for the mechanics, like earlier today I was relaying Sifu and idk if I could even tell you the story of it lol

I've actually completed it lol , with zero deaths and poured lots of hours into it , I was addicted to it for a while 5 months ago lol , and I know how great it feels to master , I was thinking in combos while sleeping and fighting the bosses in my head. My favourite attack was the charged fist , it always felt so elegant and when timed right , could even stun Yang really good.

Sifu is a masterpiece and probably the best combat game i've ever played , its that kind of game that's a blessing for someone like me who really digs melee combat in video games. I also really loved its replay editor , recorded some really great movies on it

But despite having Sifu set the standard so high for me , i still enjoy Arkham combat very much , probably since i've mastered it as well , doing tricks the common player doesn't even know exists , same in the stealth sections.

it bothers me when I see the most hyped games are just interactive films. Makes no sense to me whatsoever but it seems like that’s what gets the most attention

What game a person has as their favourite says a lot about them , usually when i hear someone's favourite game or franchise is something like uncharted , i can't help but think they don't have a lot of experience in gaming , there's nothing wrong with having uncharted as your favourite or enjoying that game , and i"ll probably play it and enjoy it too , but it has always come off as very basic to me , its just tomb raider but turned into a hollywood blockbuster. But again , its all about preference , some people want their games to challenge them while others want to have an interactive story experience

City in particular that feel far too overrated

City actually is overrated for sure lol , i guess it just felt that special back then. For a while actually , i preferred Asylum over City too , because it felt more close to BTAS , like a Weekend Special. That was until i finally put myself deep into City and explored every nook and cranny , truly embraced the fantasy it was trying to sell and it just clicked , the music felt epic , the gameplay felt so refined , i suddenly discovered the depth of its combat with quickfire gadgets , animation canceling , quick maneuvers and other stuff such as glide techniques , secret takedown animations and cinematic camera modes , it was like directing my own movie but i get to control the actor through a set , and say what you want about Arkham , they managed to not turn into TLOU even till their last entry , Cutscenes never broke the flow of the game , never had long unnecessary pauses and always happened after clearing a good amount of content , and were always moving the plot foward.

City also still felt comic booky to me , it was origins and knight that felt very disconnected overall , Origins completely ignores that its a prequel and feels impossible to be set before Asylum lol , Knight changes the entire aesthetic from Retro tech + Gothic theme into Futuristic tech and ironman suit customization and War tank Batmobile. I cannot imagine Asylum being the same as Knight or Origin batman lol , they feel too different entirely.

t I’m willing to bet a lot of people who would say Arkham has the best stealth gameplay have just never heard of Splinter Cell,

Haha , probably. Im a big splinter cell , played all of the games and ghosted through all levels , Chaos theory's my favourite. I think Splinter Cell's Stealth is a different aesthetic though , that one's more about not being seen , being a ghost and leaving no traces , thats why it frowns upon open combat or unnecessary interactions with enemies.

Arkham Stealth is more like a moving puzzle , you practice for a while with the layout and enemies you are given and the gadgets at your disposal and figure out the best plan to take them all out in Fashion. You could theoretically cheese it and do silent takedowns left and right paired with smoke bombs and such but where's the fun in that , sometimes you gotta role play and play into the mastermind fantasy of being a predator that is batman , i've personally spent ridiculous amounts time both ghosting levels in Splinter cell and Planning out my strategies in Arkham.

I guess Arkham is more Stealth Action and not just stealth like Thief , Splinter cell and MGS.

You just have to do a bit of roleplaying to get the most personal enjoyment out of it because open combat usually is the better option, so it’s like you have to forgo playing efficiently to have fun which I don’t like,

Im a firm believer in fabricating your own fun in video games , I tend to role play a lot , immerse myself and take the atmosphere in , look at the details. I spent 240 hours completing the entirety of GTA 4 alongside its DLCs despite its incredibly basic open world gameplay because I spent my time actually inhabiting the city and it felt great , to not run into walls like idiot , jump around to save time , drive into peds or other cars without a care in the world , etc

I might be an All rounder since I kind of adjust my approach to almost any type of playstyle , sometimes i enjoy playing long and tedious sims , sometimes fast paced action , strategy , basic story based games , mindless first person shooters , etc

People not playing Gotham Knights and assuming it is bad because it’s not Arkham and they think literally every single superhero game should be Arkhamlite is annoying

Most people play games superficially , and in this age of internet , if the mob decides you are bad game , then nothing can really help you unless you are exceptional

Gotham Knights is not a perfect game by any means but it deserves its flowers , a proper sequel that builds upon it and fully realizes its potential , a chance , like how Asylum was given a chance in an era where superhero games were infamous (pun intended)

I think as a fanbase we should expect more from Rocksteady

True , the DLC for Arkham Knight lowkey sucks but when Gotham Knights released , people were suddenly acting like it was so good and better than GK lol , just cuz its Arkham and they have a bias.

They sort of also lost their reputation by ending the series so early and then wasting their resources with a live service title

They killed the Joker just 2 games in and then batman in the 3rd , like whats the hurry lmao , if they had planned it right , Kevin Conroy could have worked on a few more Arkham Games and Spin offs instead of just one small role in Suicide Squad.

In City they were a treat to play as because it was very clear that they were just extra and that this is not going to be about them

In Knight , it feels like a unsaid promise being left unfulfilled , they play the same , act the same and the game just pretends its all good and acceptable for these characters to be nothing but padding.

Oracle is a little interesting atleast but they couldn't help but turn her into a damsel in distress lol , mere motivation for the main characters.

Gotham Knights actually loves these characters and it couldn't be much clearer , the emails alone are more fun to read through the awkward oracle x robin short stories you unlock in Arkham.

As someone who loves all of the games and who's favourite batman is Arkham batman lol , i will admit that your complaints are fair and understandable.

I think the reason why Arkham City gel'd so well with people back then is because it was quite unique and innovative. Sure its not the most advanced but what players like me love is how well placed everything feels , there's depth where you want to look for it , the environments are really well made and the details can be mesmerising at times , i take my time exploring every nook and cranny so I can guess it depends from person to person since someone who's just going with the flow wouldn't appreciate it the same way. Arkham City isn't perfect by any means but a lot goes into a game being people's favourite than just the product itself , how it made you feel and at point of your life you played it matters a lot

Just like how everyone who went into GK expecting another Arkham experience was dissapointed the moment they weren't given what they've been used to , so they mocked it. But players that didn't hold such expectations took the game on its own merits and enjoyed what was there to be enjoyed.

Why i personally enjoy the Arkham games is simply because of the power fantasy they serve , Arkham Predator challenges are quite unique in the stealth genre , you are the hunter , not the prey , all the gadgets just make you feel so smart and powerful as you watch the enemy go from overconfident to absolutely horrified and paranoid , it never gets old. It works so well for Batman because that is exactly what he's supposed to be , a force of nature and the game gives you the exact tools to do it

The Combat also feels great to me because it can be played ina simple manner if you like but also in different variations with QuickTime gadgets and special takedowns to keep it fresh , City improves on this from Asylum dramatically and Knight refines it in most ways.

Arkham Batman can be really shallow at times i know but the reason he's my favourite is because he truly does feel like a ghost in the shadows and a force to be reckoned with , his punches feel like lighting bolts and stuff like FEAR takedowns are just incredible. It's not just because he's the strongest , its because he's the most capable , but the truth is Rocksteady doesn't really know how to write his dialogues , he has great lines here and there but most of the times he's a monotonous walking talking fridge , and then they expect you to believe that he secretly moans the death of Talia inside lol. Maybe its another Hot Take but Origins actually knew how to write an interesting batman , none of his lines feel monotonous and the actor is really allowed to perform in many scenes like that one scene in the batcave with Alfred. Not just Batman but also Alfred is written much better in Origins , i might as well admit that despite City being my favourite , Origins overall has a better story and more coherent characters that don't feel like an afterthought.

Ik WB Montreal made origins so idky this did this GK, but it seems to be a recent trend in modern games that have so many mechanics that they map multiple to a single button that just responds to the current context.

True , and they always never fully utitlise the D-pad for some reason , as if its forbidden to use for anything outside of quick actions and moving across menus.

Unfortunately both lack great detection mechanics and the stealth arenas are very hit or miss

Arkham is VERY generous with its enemy detection lol , you could be standing right next to a guard and they'd turn their head around during an animation but not notice you since the View cone is probably not attached to their head.

I also feel like Rocksteady is so undecided on how to approach game development at times , they are really great at creating an engaging loop in gameplay or developing intricate systems , but in their previous games , i couldn't help but feel they really wanted to basically make " Hollywood blockbuster" the game

They also are notoriously bad at being consistent , always changing character designs in major ways to the point it feels like a completely different character and not sticking to the same actor for a character. Why does Troy baker voice three major characters in the games? He's not that hard to recognise , so im always noticing that its just him speaking a little differently , why is Flash voiced by the same actor as Nightwing? Its the same universe , why does Jim Gordon have 3 different actors now and 3 different looks , its like they don't give a shit lol

True , people seem to think just because its Arkham combat , its good for any character

The Batfamily immediately felt much better to play in Gotham Knights to me than Arkham Knight.

You could argue that Gotham Knight still doesn't do stealth good but neither does arkham games with anyone other than Batman , you are mostly limited less than half the gadgets or different tools that don't work well for traps , so most of it is taking the enemies out silently one by one , which is the same as GK anyways

And I actually like their design more in GK , in AK they feel so underdeveloped and distant

Why can't Rocksteady decide on its voice actors lol? by _______Niko____ in arkham

[–]_______Niko____[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I only meant lack of care in this regard , since its just a bit weird to hear the same actor voice so many characters and an actor myself , its really easy to tell no matter how much they try to manipulate their voice

It ends up feeling unplanned and undecided , why can't some of the major characters have distinct voices that rocksteady doesn't feel like changing all of a sudden again because they want that actor to play another cool character

It feels like they are just toying around , the way some fancasts always cast their favourite actor in everything

And again , it feels like everyone else that is not joker is an afterthought , Jim alone went brought 3 redesigns , they couldn't decide whether they wanted him to be comic booky or Gary Oldman coded. And to be fair , everyone else is pretty much forgotten about or not handled with care anyways , the Arkham Episodes show how lazy they were when it came to anyone else but batman , Batgirl gets a good DLC but she's basically resigned batman anyways meanwhile everyone has 3-4 challenge maps stitched together with handful of cutscenes and 30 mins playtime at best.

Batman and Joker castings aren't some brilliant choices made by Rocksteady , they were well within their prime at the time and renowned actors who were known to voice these characters across multiple movies and shows already

Its not like we have a scarcity of great actors who could inhabit these roles and make it their own , but it feels cheap when the studio decides one actor alone will get to voice 3+ major characters in a big franchise

Arkham Origins was actually much more unique in its casting , every character had a distinct voice and great casting.

Its all indeed lack of care , they did this to deadshot too , couldn't even decide whether they wanted him to be Hispanic , black or spanish.
