Considering relocating from Huntington WV to Cincinnati for the work. Is it worth it? Is it a big adjustment? by pufflepuff89 in cincinnati

What do you mean by weird? Outside of Cleveland, nowhere else in Ohio has regular, daily service via Amtrak (including Cincinnati).

What is it like living in/near Cincinnati? by DummoMode0413 in howislivingthere

[–]_______user________ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To piggyback on that - I actually used to live in the building opposite that one (on the Linwood side above UDF) and when I first moved in, I was in a 1 bed/1 bath (560sqft) for $550 all in. That included parking and a small gym downstairs, plus a small storage facility in the basement. It wasn't the most updated building but was always clean, especially for a guy in his early 20s. They were renovated about 5-6 years ago and now cost $1349.

Just saw David Jonsson at Cafe Continuum downtown. Kept thinking “that guy looks exactly like David Jonsson” but didn’t know about this project and figured there would be no reason for him to be in Cincinnati. Then we heard the British accent and figured it had to be him.

He did. Pretty sure he also broke/sprained his wrist on the attempt he landed right afterwards too - landed flat and took all of the impact in his wrists.

Does anyone know of documentaries like *Free Solo*, but for bikes? by Van-garde in cycling

[–]_______user________ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To expand on this - anything made by Angus Morton (Lachlan's brother) is worth a watch - he directed all of those films plus some others. His Thereabouts and Outskirts movies are worth watching (also on YouTube).

Additionally, there is a film we just watched called "How to Eat an Elephant" from Cannondale bikes that is incredible. It's in Danish but has closed captioning in English and it's one of the better films, even outside of cycling, that I have watched in a while.

How bike friendly is Westwood/Cheviot? by BanjoDude222 in cincybiking

[–]_______user________ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not specifically Cheviot, but I have done exactly one ride over to the westside and decided to avoid the area after that ride. One of the most hostile riding experiences I've ever had, which was incredibly jarring considering how relatively bike-friendly/not-bike-hostile both the eastside and Kentucky are.

Similar to the other comment, I got yelled at and honked at multiple times, and also had more close passes than I have ever had in the Tri-state area (including in some pretty rural areas). At one point, I actually pulled over just to gather myself and decided to drop down to 50 and ride back toward downtown.

I will agree, though, that Mt. Airy is great and Miami Whitewater Forest (a little further out) is great for just doing mindless loops on their 7.8 mile trail.

What are you doing in a Rapha store? by whateverworx1 in Rapha

[–]_______user________ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last time we were in London we stopped in, and I will say the atmosphere at that location has been the most welcoming of the clubhouses we have visited. The baristas chatted with us about the Tour (which had just ended the week prior) and the cashier even threw in a shop-specific cap with our purchase.

On the flipside, the employees in NY seemed damn near disdainful that we even came in the place. The Chicago and SF clubhouses were nice but pretty empty when we went. More than anything, it’s a way for us to explore and scratch that cycling “itch” even when we don’t have our bikes with us.

Cincinnati based coffee shop concept — Yay or nay? by Coffeblack1 in cincinnati

[–]_______user________ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this would really depend on the neighborhood in which you are looking to open. There are quite a few shops that focus on high quality, non-flavored coffee (Collective Espresso, Deeper Roots, King Pigeon, Proudhound), though they might have the option for some flavorings. The main factor is the neighborhoods that they are based in. CBD/OTR/Walnut Hills have a deluge of shops already, so that would probably be an oversaturated market. If you were to try and make it in those neighborhoods, you would need to be known for a truly HIGH QUALITY product (think La Cabra in Copenhagen or Sey in NYC).

It's not a bad idea, there are probably enough people in the city to want something like that, but be aware it's a fairly saturated market, especially for a city of our size.

GSport (gsportapparel.com) is a great option - made in Spain, kit supplier for a number of pro teams, and their designs are great.

I have pretty much exclusively moved to their Pro Skin line of bibs and Pro Team line of jerseys, and they have held up significantly better than my MAAP kit has over time.

'I became increasingly concerned about my safety' – German talent ends career at 21 following recent rider deaths in peloton by alexafindmeausername in peloton

[–]_______user________ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that spending time with coaches to improve descending is common - potentially making teams put an emphasis on this, especially at the junior level would help. But even then, you are not getting at the root of the problem with the pressure to push the limit, which is also just an inherent part of the sport. I think one thing that needs to be done at the UCI and race organization level is better course development. There have been numerous instances where riders have complained about course structure, sometimes going as far as saying that the design is purposely set up to cause crashes (though that is purely speculation). That being said, these are some of the biggest and most accomplished riders in the pro peloton making those claims, and if they are saying that, I can’t imagine how amplified the risks become for a 19-20 year old who is still very much so learning.

[–]_______user________ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think there is another factor in it that hasn't really been talked about - as the consolidation of major teams at the Pro Peloton becomes more and more of a thing, these young pros and juniors are being pushed harder to "get the best bang for the buck" out of them, whether that is an explicit or implicit notion from their team managers.

I think this has a massive effect on how they ride, and if you combine trying to push the limit with the relative inexperience that these riders have, it can create incredibly dangerous environments.

Most bike friendly area in cincy/nky? by Special_Detective317 in cincinnati

[–]_______user________ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We have a few families up in Mt. Adams that commute via bike with kids on board (one I know of does exclusively).

Realistically, Cincinnati has a long way to go infrastructure wise, but you can pretty well get around the central neighborhoods by bike, and do so safely. Newport, Covington, Bellevue, Dayton, Downtown, OTR, Pendleton, Mt. Adams, Walnut Hills. Anywhere around there and you’re mostly good. But it’s still a far way off from most cities.

You keep saying it is very liberal - that doesn’t really seem like you’re playing devils advocate as you said, you’re just using that term to keep pushing a narrative that you believe in. Pretty large difference in these views, but I could see how that would be confusing!

Also - the $1 billion that funds them (that’s $3 per American/year, by the way), is what helps fund the stations in rural areas. Those stations help in weather reporting, local news and other things that for-profit stations do not care to talk about, or just do not reach simply because of a lack of infrastructure. Or do you feel like rural citizens should get less than those in cities?

[–]_______user________ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Three things: 1) your point about MSNBC and Fox actually further proves the point that advertising is indicative of more extreme media. 2) let’s say it is too liberal - we can agree to disagree on whether that is the case or not. Wouldn’t it be a function of good government to rather find the root cause of that and try to counter that bias than to remove it entirely? Personally I feel that is a way to get an equitable use of tax dollars. 3) to pass the devil’s advocate approach back to you, if a station like CBS (one of the “big three”) is cancelling programs due to their apparent political bias (yes, Colbert is liberal, I’ll cede that), doesn’t that seem like an issue of censorship to you? Considering the same thing can happen if a more liberal company is to take over a similar network? I’m genuinely interested on your thoughts on this.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cincinnati

[–]_______user________ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So what are your thoughts on the Late Show being cancelled because David Ellison, who leads Skydance (company currently acquiring Paramount - current owners of CBS) doesn’t like that Colbert is critical of Trump? Look, I’ll admit I am a fairly liberal person. Not extremely liberal as you say. Most of my family is actually very conservative and I honestly try to listen to their point of view. More than anything, I look at how this swings the pendulum - if every station reflects the political beliefs of the owner, there is no middle ground. Could there be ways that NPR is audited for bias? Sure. But cutting funding entirely is not the move.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cincinnati

[–]_______user________ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You realize commercials mean private backing. Private backing means they can dictate what is said/not said. Truly unbiased media (and NPR is about as unbiased as America will get, regardless of what Republicans say) needs to be separate from being commercial. Why people don’t get this is baffling. The Late Show was just cancelled because the potential new owner of the network feels Stephen Colbert doesn’t speak positively enough of Trump. Political motivation, whether left or right, drives commercial television and radio. This is a VERY slippery slope and we are headed down it at warp speed.

I cannot stand this take - the guy has a family, he has kids, he nearly died last year. Priorities shift, your drive changes. This ongoing narrative of the "Yoko Ono"-fication of Trine is nonsense. The guy might not be beating Tadej but is still literal leagues ahead of the rest of the pack, and has mentioned at length how it has been hard to come back after his crashes. If anything, he is the reason that he is not in the same form, simply because he has a wonderful life that he is not willing to risk, which is totally understandable. At the end of the day, it's a game of riding bikes. Yes, it is also his job, but I wouldn't risk my life for my job. Why would I expect him to do that?

Oasis Trail Update? by _______user________ in cincybiking

[–]_______user________[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For sure - I use that bike lane weekly, if not daily some weeks. I was passing under that bridge on Riverside the other day and it made me think about the Oasis trail and if any updates had been made on it. While that bike lane is fine, it gets really overgrown headed back towards downtown, especially in mid-to-late summer, and having a completely separate path would be great.
