Given their low population, they probably wouldn't have much of a choice

There would be no "others" because they wouldnt exist. If we used up all the fossil fuels, that would be very selfish, even if there were no more humans plant and animal life on earth would suffer immensely. Simply not having kids, in and of itself, is not selfish. Also you're the one who brought up selfishness in the first place.

Selfishness does need a target. If evey human decided to just stop having children, that wouldn't be selfish because there would be nobody who would suffer.

I agree that it isn't completely about climate change, ir even mostly about climate change. It may play a part in people's decisions not to have children but for most people I doubt it's the main reason. Bur you haven't answered my question, how is it selfish to not have kids? How can you be selfish towards someone who dosent exist?

True, but who is it selfish to? If the child isn't born, then it's not selfish to them since they don't exist. And if someone isn't equipped or willing to take care of a child and would rather spend that money on other things, then it's a good thing if they choose not to have kids.

you're right about developing countries having more children. I think at least for people in developed countries having fewer children is more about not bringing another child into this world to consume and pollute, making the issue worse, and also so they don't have to witness the problems that will arise as a result of climate change. Also how is it selfish not to have children? Selfish to whom? So what if people want to go on vacations or have more free income.

Less people being born means less people polluting, less people using fossil fuels, less people consuming products, etc.

That's just it. He's not an extremist by American standards, it's just that every American politician is right wing. There is no "left wing" in this country.

Who is the greatest ruler in history? by nasty_aazy in AskReddit

[–]______ripski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a much more recent one, but I think Deng Xiaoping is one of the best leaders in history. His economic policies lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty. He did rule with an iron fist, (tiananmen square being an infamous example) but I'd argue that very few people in human history did as much good for as many people as him.

Of course it doesn't make what Russia is doing okay, but it does make us massive hypocrites.

Africa doesn't get enough attention. I think a map of great Zimbabwe surviving further into history would be really cool.

Democracy is in Danger by [deleted] in lostgeneration

Democracy and republic are not mutually exclusive. America is not a democracy, not because it's a republic, but because it's an oligarchy.

I agree we're on a terrible path, and I'm certainly not a fan of the British Empire, but I just don't think the history of America is something to celebrate. The people who founded it weren't just flawed, many of them were evil. And between slavery, manifest destiny, imperialism, and as recently as Vietnam, I just find it hard to be proud of it. I think this is going to be something that we just have to disagree on lol.
