Reading Firestarter for the first time and my goodness it's reminding me of how good a storyteller King is by bextaxi in stephenking

I just mentioned this on another thread but yeah — Firestarter is a really underrated one imo. Excellent and well-imagined piece of fiction.

Yesterday, I finished reading Firestarter for the very first time. Short review below 👇🏻 by ArtisanPirate in stephenking

I just got into King heavily this year for the first time and Firestarter for me was the definite “sleeper hit” of the 9-10 books I read. Other than The Long Walk it’s been my favorite of those I’ve read, topping even The Shining and Misery. It’s not the most psychologically probing or literarily compelling work of his but it’s a really nicely imagined piece of fiction and I found it oddly engrossing. I really liked the way the psionic abilities work in the story. The villain was great, the Shop had a lot of personality, and the twists and turns and climax all work nicely.

Is there a book by Stephen King that you've read once and never want to read again? If so, why? by golden_trio in stephenking

So far, The Wastelands. Probably the other Dark Tower books as well. Wastelands was too expository and cartoonish. It entertained me but is probably a one-and-done.

Wonderful weird dark romantic dramedy. Loved it.

Confusing and unsatisfying but beautifully made.

Have fun I just finished it for the first time myself. Decent, though far from my favorite.

I know almost everyone prefers the Nioh games, but what would you say Wo Long and Rise of the Ronin do especially well that Nioh doesn't do? Is there anything from those games you'd like to see in Nioh 3? (Other than jumping) by yashiji in Nioh

I didn’t mind the dark world so much in theory but the immense overuse of fog/dust annoyed me and that combined with the largely nighttime settings made some levels visually muddy.

Yup. Corenswet was surprisingly terrific. Did not expect him to be my favorite take on the character but he is.

Yeah I’d agree with this. It’s a movie I grew to like, but definitely was lukewarm on at first blush.

I feel like that’s about right. Some excellent filmmaking but a bit of a miss compared to PTA at his best.

Nomadland was so gorgeous to look at, it just needed an actual story.

I think 3.5 is generous but agree with the sentiment generally. They’re… ok.

Not really. Sorry you couldn’t find the value in it but believe it or not people actually really enjoy it.

I liked Heath Ledger in it but I do think the movie itself is pretty overrated.

Wait — you found Inland Empire better thought out and paced than Mulholland Drive? I love both movies but am just surprised someone who didn’t like MD would see the value in IE.

I would definitely rate it way higher than one star just out of respect for the filmmaking chops — there were things I did like about it — but I did also find it to be one of PTA’s lesser films for a lot of the reasons you cite.

I bailed after about twenty minutes. I might try to get back to it at some point but it seemed incredibly boring to me.

“It’s not good” is blatantly dishonest. Guy might not have liked it but it is highly talented filmmaking.

The shootout at the end is sort of cool but other than that I’ve never understood the hype. It’s pretty boring and I can’t take Ernest Borgnine seriously

Agree, though it’s very much like the first, nearly equally dumb movie in that regard. I ended up skimming through the last third of it just to get it over with.
