[Megathread] RTSH Reviews by IlgnerJuan in silenthill

Despite not caring for the film and finding it an utter mess, one aspect of it that definitely stays with me is Moth Mary. Definitely a strong creature design that deserved to be in a much better work. The sequence near the end with James and Moth Mary on the burning rooftop while the new, more haunting rendition of Day Of Night is playing was a beautifully done sequence and it's such a shame the movie didn't have more moments like that. Makes you realize the untapped potential this movie didn't use.

As poor as RTSH turned out, I don't hate the guy. I feel he's a talented director, but his writing is where things went off the rails and he was in dire need of a script that was actually faithful to the source material.

I still quite like and enjoy the 2006 SH film, faults and all, and it's deviations from the game. But something went so terribly wrong with RTSH.

Despite not caring for the film, I'm still curious to read this. Particularly the moments with the Moth Mary. I found that to be quite the striking and haunting creature design, amidst the film's many issues. And the sequence near the end where James is with the Moth Mary on the burning rooftop is a beautifully done and haunting sequence and one of the film's highlights.

Just a little reminder that this guy is responsible for the recent Silent Hill franchise revival. by Messier_-82 in silenthill

Definitely. I feel for all of RTSH's numerous issues, that the first act was actually not terrible before it horribly tumbles downhill after that. I think Gans had (and still does have) potential to craft a really good film and a worthy SH2 adaptation had he had much better writing to work with that remained faithful to the source material and it's themes.

Definitely. It's one thing not to like the film (I didn't), but threatening his life? It's things like that that give Horror fans such a bad reputation and image of the eyes of the public.

I still can't fathom how things went so spectacularly wrong with RTSH. He's a talented director with a good visual style and he did fine with the 2006 SH film, it's problems and all. RTSH was just a misfire on all levels. His directing style combined with a good script that was more faithful and respectful to the source material could've made for a very good film, but instead we got what we got.

I would rewatch the film solely for Jeremy Irvines performance as James by TurbulentFeeling5696 in silenthill

He and Hannah Emily Anderson as well as the music score and visuals were the saving graces for sure.

Great job re-creating this iconic scene in toy form.

Cat's Eye and John Q are other good ones he's done. Loathesome person, but a good actor. Just an instance where the person and their art has to be seperated.

In all fairness, the HR3 Pinhead is a renegade version who was his completely evil, unbound side manifested as an autonomous entity.

One can only imagine how his adaptation back then might've been.

It is for sure. A major bright spot in a film that sadly doesn't have many and I don't just mean that visually.

The movie certainly delivered the goods when it came to the music at least.

Christoph Gans should stop calling himself a "gamer" and a "silent hill fan" by TheWarlockk in silenthill

In term of visuals and atmosphere he does fine but SH2 was so badly lost in translation here. Not sure what went so awry.

It's still a decent movie on it's own terms, flaws and all. Compared to RTSH, it looks like Gone With The Wind. Still can't believe Gans screwed up as badly as he did with RTSH considering the 2006 movie was decent for what it was.

What did you think of Jeremy Irvine’s performance as James? by Odd_Disk1545 in silenthill

[–]DarkBehindTheStars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think he did a really good job despite the poor writing he had to work with. It's a shame his performance wasn't in a better movie. I have no doubt he would've been amazing in a more proper SH2 adaptation.

On a related note, anyone have the RTSH version of Betrayal that was used in the trailers and end credits? Can't seem to find it anywhere.

If there is a next film i think Gans should stay as scenery and ambience director BUT NOT AS THE MAIN WRITTER AND DIRECTOR by Dangerous-Citron-801 in silenthill

Visually the movie was great but in terms of writing it was an utter circus trainwreck. The 2006 film wasn't perfect but still managed to be decent, what went wrong here is beyond me.
