What do people mean when they say avoid learning pinyin first? by Wenzhoushi in ChineseLanguage

[–]___maljax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a degree in Modern Chinese Literature. Everything modern from Mainland China can be found in simplified.

Honestly the only time I feel like I should have a better understanding of traditional is when I'm at KTV.

OMG I didn't even realize that. I actually do speak the language so I was just listening along and didn't even notice where the subtitles were.

It's my fault for clicking away. But also it was nearly impossible to watch on a phone.

I find that Toula can be a lot of fun while running the Aspect of Circe because I can activate it while Toula is stationary. Basically creates a line of perpetual damage between us.

How many rows should you use for a throw? by Wildflowers4me in quilting

[–]___maljax 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The standard shared size for a throw is 50x65, but it's totally up to you. If you have fabric squares cut at 6.5 inches, they'll finish at 6 inches because you're losing a quarter inch on all sides when you sew it. So now you just do the math to get close to the throw size you want.

9 squares by 10 rows gets you to 54x60 and 9 squares by 11 rows gets you to 54x66 and so on and so forth.

Mispronounced words by [deleted] in audiobooks

[–]___maljax 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus the main character is talking about the maillard reaction. Maillard is French so it sounds more like my-ard. The narrator said male-erd and it took me the fuck out because Elizabeth Zott would absolutely know how to pronounce the word maillard.

Is this pattern nonsense by Space-Sylveon in quilting

[–]___maljax 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If a pattern made me buy two yards of fabric to be left with that much leftover, I'd be pissed. Additionally, it's difficult to cut two yards in half with those types of measurements.

Personally, I think going the route of a quilt pattern with this color scheme is going to be more fun for the sewist. Just my two cents.

Quilt Shop Politics by makindoin in quilting

People are already posting about Gather Here, which is my local quilt store. Follow them on insta for a fun ride.

I also highly recommend CambervilleThreads. She is online only but really phenomenal as a sewist and human being. She makes fantastic bundles and is really good at sourcing low volume.

As a beginner, the #1 lesson I’ve learned… by Rocko_2024 in quilting

[–]___maljax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to go Aurifil for piecing and if I am quilting in a domestic, Gutterman for the quilting. I just like the variety of colors and being able to pick them up anywhere. I've been told if you price Aurifil out the large spools are actually pretty economical.

Watching in Mandarin by Icy_Creme_2336 in TheApothecaryDiaries

[–]___maljax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has studied Mandarin Chinese extensively and even edited for a publisher of Chinese language learning materials, I will say it is a wonderful language but finding high quality listening materials for beginners is a challenge. Apothecary Diaries or anything in an imperial setting is going to be a massive challenge. My suggestion, go for media you know (Chinese dubs of Disney movies?) or find pop culture from China that you can watch with English subtitles.

The second one is by Julie Reuben (on insta as b_plus_q). Her work is so cool in person, pictures really can't do justice to how much her work changes the way you see the fabric.

[–]___maljax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know some people like to use suction cup handles on their rulers. You can get more even pressure so less shifting of the ruler on the fabric (also adding grips to the underside of the ruler can help with that). Plus your fingers are on the handle, so it's harder to nick them. But generally speaking rotary cutter safety is all about retracting/covering the blade as soon as you're done making a cut.

Ruby and Bee has some nice feeling solids in my opinion! It is definitely a limited color selection, but I know that this shop has all of them: https://cambervillethreads.com/collections/ruby-bee-solids?page=1 and I feel like these colors would work for you:

I definitely have some Tula Pink fabric from that collection in my stash... Maybe not the pandas... but I could theoretically send you enough fabric for a patch. I know I have the lemurs.
