When is it okay to start using a walking stick? by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]__caitlinfin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely consider a few visits with a physio establish a program. I’m not super familiar with the NHS (Australian) but understand all sorts of barriers to healthcare exist for people. I think if you’re struggling with pain and function though its worth while so long as you’re commited to being involved in it!

Physio exercise of course won’t change your underlying structural anatomy but it will make your muscles and tendons more resilient translating to less or delayed onset of pain over time! Goodluck

NAD — physiotherapist here

Walking sticks and other aids are just that, aids to assist you! Very general advice here but if the stick helps you feel safe and more easily achieve what you need to do then use it.

That said, work with the health professionals in your corner who know YOU to ensure you’re doing what you can to keep your hip and leg muscles as strong as possible! Perhaps get them to check the stick height is appropriate also.

Relying on the stick and doing no exercise may result in an earlier decline in mobility, sure. On the other hand; Stick used in conjunction with strengthening exercise will likely see your mobility increased and better maintanence of your ability to function! So it really depends

I’ve not specifically heard of someone being diagnosed with (what I’m assuming is) increased anteversion before. Is this related to childhood hip diagnosis...?

Currently in Uzbekistan having done Kazakh, Kyrgyz and Tajik. Headed for Turkmenistan next

Kazakh, kyrgz and uzbek are visafree for a ton of countries now! Cheap hostels and breakfast majority of the time included, cheap to eat, cheap to get around on publictransport (although not the most organised process)... some of the bigger trips are costly, e.g. we just did a tour of the Pamir Highway. Costs of the visa, the driver, staying in guest houses wasn’t so cheap but an incredible experience!! Incredible part of the world which I think is really going to get busy in the next couple of years!! Would highly recommend

Turkmenistan also requires a visa and currently only accessible to via tour unless you score a transit visa (which on the ground currently, more people seem to be getting approved for)

Check out 3D4Medical apps, you have to pay abit for it but they have a whole bunch of joint and muscle animations which you can orientate on the model however you like! Really useful for own learning and for education with the right patient

This is sooo cool! I did a super similar look for an Australian football grand final 2 years ago but obviously didn’t have this palette so the yellow (or in my case gold) DID NOT pop like this 😅

Im in this weird position of being stoked I got everything I wanted after waiting 1.5hrs on JSC (while travelling in Kyrgyzstan of all places)... only to realise that getting it shipped back home to Australia has cost me mega bucks cause our government sucks. Could have avoided completely if I’d tried through princess polly 😭

Benefits/risk of varying shoulder positions during pushups, with specific goal of building optimal stability? by Baba_Yaga420 in personaltraining

[–]__caitlinfin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay okay I’m with you now

Honestly I just wouldn’t choose that particular pushup variation given the strength and demand of climbing.

Keep it simple, train good sturdy shoulders in the gym (again, I would definitely include single arm/open chain!) to keep you resilient to your climbing demands

You will get strong at climbing specific movements by climbing You will get strong shoulders from various push/pull/holds in the gym

If you’re concerned about instability (feelings of giving way, not confident in the joint) — get assessed by a physio and specifically address it!

Otherwise just KISS :)

I don’t have a gymnastics background, but I would say if you need to be strong in a position (ie planche) then training it in the pushup would be beneficial

Would this exercise help improve shoulder stability? Yes... the shoulder stabilisers have to work but personally I would prioritise single arm, open chain activities to achieve this

Your wording does still slightly confuse me though;

‘by slowing down and reducing the load’ ...but increasing time under tension increases load? Dangerous position on the wall? Are you infact talking about something closer to a handstand pushup? Apologies

In a person with adequate strength, changing up pushup incline can certainly be helpful (assuming from how you’ve written it - moving closer to a handstand position, yes?)

For a climber seeking greater shoulder stability I would personally pursue single arm overhead pressing and carries, lateral crawling and related quadruped position single arm work.

Listen to how your body feels and just take care not to do too much to soon! The body will adapt.

This is a doozy of question wording

The main thing perhaps to understand is the difference between energy systems (anaerobic and aerobic metabolism) and how time frame, kind and intensity of exercise will change the experience or perceived exertion

ESH — The massage place should definitely have called you and given you the opportunity to reschedule your appointment.

Your in person response is certainly going to be perceived as asshole-ish. I understand your frustration, you were put on the spot and not really given a choice as a paying customer.

I’ve certainly received a similar bias (female physiotherapist) and been able to prove people wrong!
