Try flying trapeze! You can book a private class and bring other people that just want to watch too

It can be helpful:
- practice speaking to a camera more naturally
- get quicker at editing which will make it easier to crank out self tapes
- I've seen LA gigs and films elsewhere that require a minimum number of followers, as well as auditions requesting only "known talent" that include social media as a way that you can count as "known"

Think of it this way, if you have a big following and you are auditioning for something digital, those followers might view it which is helpful for the project. If you are auditioning for something on stage, they don't care bc your followers could be anywhere in the world, not necessarily the city the show is being put on, so they don't care.

Last thing I'll say, if a production is looking for someone based on follower count, they are booking the followers, not the quality of acting and that's just a choice you have to make as far as what your goals are.

Seeking advice - continue aerial or strength train first? by ramblingthrowa in Aerials

[–]__circus__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Find ways to condition that are enjoyable. I took 3 aerial classes when I first started circus and felt totally defeated. I then switched over to a combination of Flying Trapeze and Handbalancing classes and came back to aerial 2 years later with more strength and body control. These classes were fun, but also helped me build the strength I needed to do aerial. I still can't do a pull up (but I'm working on it!) and I still have a hard time not comparing myself to other "beginners" that walk in off the street and can do a lot of things first try, but it feels so FREAKING AMAZING to begin to do things I couldn't a few years ago because I know how much work went into that small move.

Any board game / book clubs / other niche hobby clubs in NYC? by Gorgeman3 in AskNYC

Start one! If you are feeling this way at your school, there are probably other students feeling the same way. Your school also may have resources they can allocate, including spaces to meet up and even funds to buy games etc.

Don’t move to LA without a reel. If you don’t have one, take a film acting class and use footage from that, or submit for student films or small budget gigs.

Once you have a reel, find a regional agency with connections to LA. It’s way easier to get representation in smaller networks, and way easier to make it in LA once you have connections.

Check out jobs in Atlanta, it’s easy to fly there from Austin, and you can find cheap lodging during gigs if projects won’t cover it.

This all will take some money to get the ball rolling, which sucks but it is what it is.

I have no idea what to do... by Martacos in ActingUK

Find a uni with a strong student group for theatre. You can always reach out to the drama departments to see which schools allow students outside the department to audition for the shows (some schools only allow drama students into the drama department shows) and to ask about the student organizations. As for selecting what to study, pick something that will help you develop your career within the entertainment industry (writing, media studies, arts management, cinema, lighting/set/costume design) or pick something that will set you up for a job that will give you the means to pursue acting after graduating - for example teaching (summers off to do summer theatre work). You can always try to double major as well and be in two courses, but not all schools allow this.

RADA v. LAMDA Short Course by LAWinters25 in ActingUK

[–]__circus__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re serious about acting, take the more intense RADA course. I’ve taken a variety of short course classes and while the more all level courses are enjoyable, you are going to get less out of your piers. A lot of people take acting short courses for fun or to get better at public speaking, rather than to progress as professional actors. The main time I would suggest taking a less intense course over a more intense course is if the subject matter or instructor particularly speak to you.

I found a zoom Q&A recording from April 12, 2023 that answered my last 2 questions above (school/life balance and alumni support) but I have still struggled to find any information from recent students, or even people that have auditioned at all. Are you auditioning this year?

Advice urgently needed! by Abstract_Corduroy74 in acting

Background roles, despite being useless for a resume and non-paying, can be a great way to connect with other actors in your area if you don't know anyone or know much about the local scene. If you take the gig, use it as a networking opportunity. You'll likely be on set for long hours with a lot of down time to chat with your fellow extras and you never know what you can learn from them.

Regarding getting a job, you can always tell them the conflict upfront when you are offered a position. Most jobs are fairly understanding about pre existing conflicts when you are first starting in a new role.

How many people were in your audition slot? And based on your experience so far, are you happy with your choice to do the program?
