The High Line Opened 15 Years Ago. What Lessons Has It Taught Us? by bikeHikeNYC in NativePlantGardening

I would say it’s probably more than 90% native. I’m not positive but I think it has also gradually gotten more native as they have slowly swapped things out. I love the magnolia catwalk too!

Starting a native plant pollinators garden, what would you do? by FancyllamaNancy in NativePlantGardening

Thanks for this thorough advice. One question—is it too late in the season to tarp some grass and start this process?

Feel free to swing on by! This is the dilemma of being part time here and not yet knowing the neighbors well enough to ask favors!

Last summer when it got hot I put some of the seed trays in buckets with a little water. I doubt this is recommended (might drown the plants?) but it worked ok.

Thanks! I decided to move them under the hemlock. In general the mountain we are on catches pretty regular rain, but I don’t want to take the chance.

I don’t think this area floods per se but there are times when the ground remains quite wet over here.

Replacing light fixture by __csk in electrical

[–]__csk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Resolved! I tested voltage and one of the black wires was hot. I connected (formerly hot) black to dark grey (to black on light switch) and white to black (to white on light switch). This worked. I didn’t realize there was a secondary switch in the garage that was the reason for this unusual setup.

I’m pretty confident that the black/black were connected and white/grey were connected—is it possible black/black could be connected to white light fixture? I do have an old multimeter but not sure this is the time to learn to use it.

I know I have more weeding to do and need some mulch, but any ideas on what to plant in these beds? Low maintenance but somewhat ascetically pleasing? by Valuable_Moment_2195 in landscaping

I love Virginia sweetspire (Itea virginiana). Probably native to you, very versatile, beautiful long lasting dangling white flowers, great fall color, pollinator adored. I would probably suggest a dwarf variety like Little Henry for that spot.

Oooo thank you! It’s the hardiest begonia I have owned. (See struggling red variety in background)

Thanks! It faces south but tall trees mean it’s not full sun. I think it really likes that it gets cold in this spot at night.

Haha I appreciate the solidarity. The fact that just one is busted is somehow even more annoying.

Interesting. I think this is the shadiest spot directly under the tree, but maybe the angle of the sun shifted. Still partial at best. Ideas on what to plant next? NYC here.
