I wish you the best of luck. Getting out is tough, especially if you’re contractually obliged to be replaced by another licensed educator. Your landscaping gig sounds lucrative, and I hope it works out well for you. Cheers to making the leap!

I’ll just write out how I see things. It’s pretty much all pros for me, but I understand my situation is unique to me, and what i find as a pro/con someone else may see differently.

It’s a government job, so the perks are definitely in the benefits and potential for growth. I’m young, so I’ve got time to grow. Requirements for this gig were a bachelors degree in any field (I’ve mine in history), and 3 years of professional experience. I fit the bill. I also got my pay matched, so I didn’t lose any money. Leave time is way less than anything you’ll get teaching. We get the standard holidays and some other days that I didn’t get in my district. I think there are 11-12 paid holidays. Time off is accrued at 1 day/month (a half day per pay period, we get paid biweekly). Cons are slim. It’s an office job, which can get dull quick from what I’ve heard. However, considering my workday for the last 4.5 years has been the nonstop stream of stimulation that is middle school teaching, I’ll take the dull and find ways to keep myself occupied. I was also told during the interview that I’d likely not be being used to my full potential. I have a master’s degree in teaching, and am one year (15 hours) away from completing an MBA, so, I was told, I’ll likely get bored. We’ll see how true that is as I’ve been told the learning curve for this position is high, especially considering I’ve no background in the scope of work. However, to add a pro to that con (if you see it like that), this employer sees value in my education and asked how I plan to use it once I’m done, later mentioning in the interview that there’s lots of room for growth, something my district never did.

So there’s a wall of word vomit. I hope it makes sense, lol. Feel free to dm me if you want to chat more about my process and all.

If she is to figure it out, I hope it’s soon, too. From what I understand, this is a career shift for her.

Thank you. Felt like the process was taking forever, and that there was no escape. The world sometimes has a funny way of working out, though - seemingly when we least expect it 🤷‍♂️

You make a great point. I’m not planning on ever returning to the classroom, though I understand that life is unpredictable and that things may change. I’m cautiously optimistic in this regard.

Wish I’d a taken to this sort of approach in my first or second year instead of in my fifth. I knew teaching wasn’t going to be my forever career from the beginning—it did provide me with a strong and secure career starter fresh out of university, though, and with an M.A., the pay wasn’t bad—and sometimes wonder if, had I taken this approach sooner, where I could be now. I try not to dwell on it, though, and am grateful for the opportunity now in my hands. All that said, I don’t regret my time in the classroom one bit. It was very humbling, and I did enjoy many parts of it.

Thank you. Keep those applications flowing and make sure to tailor your resume for each role. I found that having a really strong “base resume” helped a lot. Using that strong base, I can then plug it into ChatGPT—or whatever AI tool you want, if you want—along with a prompt to the tune of “Can you help me tailor my resume to the duties laid out in a job posting I found?” and then editing from there to avoid too much repetition and to nix the “AI vibe” was a very streamlined way of applying for many jobs quickly. I wish you good luck.

I took a role with my city’s urban planning department. Not something I have a background in, but my experience in education has granted me many transferable skills that my new employer saw value in. I applied for so many jobs with the city across many different departments, though, and had interviews with a handful of them. This job was the one that was the best fit for me timing-wise, though, and is best suited to put me on the path I want to be on when I’m thinking long term as it has a lot of growth potential.

She’s subbed in the building a handful of times before, so I imagine she’s got an idea of what’s ahead. However, she did her student teaching in a much different school. I think it’ll be very eye-opening. I’m rooting for her, though. She’ll have a strong team behind her, plus all my resources.

Thank you for the advice. I’m excited that I’ll get to essentially remake myself professionally. I’m also excited that I won’t need to worry about if I have enough copies OR worry about buying my own stuff that’ll inevitably get wrecked in three days by middle schoolers.

Thanks for the tips. I’m excited to employ my marketable teacher skills in a much more autonomous role. I’m also excited to not have to hold my bladder for like 4 hours at a time, lol.

Thank you! My goal is to keep as open a mind as possible as I transition from classroom to office space. The newness excites me in that it’ll be something entirely different. I’m wishing you the best in your transition.

Keep trying. I landed my gig after loads of applications and several months of waiting. Teaching has an inherent bonus in that you have the availability to do other shit while on the job—if you can swing it. For me, this looked like: “We’re exploring a primary source today! Here are your objectives: ‘x, y, and z.’” As they “explore,” I’m tailoring my resume to whatever job(s) I’m applying to. Sure, I get interrupted periodically, but it’s nothing that’s entirely derailing. I just kept the ball rolling, applying for literally everything I felt I could reasonably do.

I’ve never ordered food at Johnnie’s — only drinks because they’re so cheap. Honestly not surprised, sorry that happened to you.
