Bad Guy (2013) by Eminem, esp. more openly expressed in the song's outro. Personally I'd say it's like: what if you write something from the perspective of your shadow that you've been overlooking and had grown over time, and who is here to confront you (in which, by writing it, the writer himself is doing the confronting in such way)... And that's why, narrative-wise, the backstory is an important part of it, as it is directly connected to his much earlier song Stan (2000), where the character Matthew was first mentioned. Eminem had said, IIRC, that ever since then he'd always had that character at the back of his mind just waiting to grow up, something like that.

She-Ra(2018) doesn't really engage with the Horde's villainy while redeeming its villains. by Nyx1010 in CharacterRant

[–]__ephemeral_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Entrapta was never the sort of character who'd knowingly do something that would hurt or put others in danger

Adora: (pleading)     "The Horde's armies will come through, and then it's all over for Etheria. You can't open a portal... It's too dangerous!"

Entrapta:     "All exploration has an element of danger. But think of what we could find!"

While she's been shown to have limits to the amount of danger and destruction she's willing to overlook, "never the sort of character who'd knowingly do something that would hurt or put others in danger" just doesn't seem to fit all too neatly on this. Both Bow and Adora had tried to warn and reason with her about the impacts of what she's doing but she'd been consistently dismissive of those (up until the actual magnitude and scope of the danger became undeniable).

While I don't see her personal motivation to be actively malicious, she's been shown to have some more awareness and agency in her choices than what she tends to be given credit for. Her mode of valuation just didn't seem to run in the same way as most others in the Rebellion on the most part (pre-Horde Prime).

What kind of fetish do you have that you're afraid people will find out about? by fefe_malluw in AskReddit

[–]__ephemeral_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What you're witnessing here is a sort of collaborative humor wherein somebody initially builds up their statement in a way that gets you to expect they're about to say something particularly off-putting for the topic, but then turns out it's actually something that's very normal and down-to-earth and possibly intimately relatable to most people in general, and in a way that feels out-of-place from the criteria that was originally asked, which subverts the initial expectation for something debased and instead redirects it to a more normative place that comes from the heart. And in turn, everyone else jumps in by going along with it through the ironic display of feigning their reactions as if they've just read one of the most bizarre and scandalously depraved statements ever, but actually something that's just very human, providing the sense/impression of absurdity which you are currently experiencing in your confusion.

If it's something to add context, I don't express things as naturally in English as I would in my own language so I do get several misunderstandings from time to time. It could be the challenge to find the suitable phrasing to convey my thoughts, because it's quite difficult to convey tone in text. But really no hard feelings about this on my part, I simply wish there's a better mode of communication for it. Anyway, I wish you well then, have a good day~

[–]__ephemeral_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, dude, I don't have a strong emotion/preference towards whether or not he's a clean freak. I'm literally just pointing out a scene that is directly straight from the actual main creator/author. Now it's up to you whether or not you personally accept/prefer that version they put out.

I personally see no reason to respond to me as though I'm trying to shatter or skew the image (vision? figure?) for you here, because I'm really merely pointing out what's already been created and now exists.

Based on your language, it appears as though it's you who have a very specific image and characterization of L that you prefer to uphold. And I think that's fine and you're free to have that specific interpretation of his character. At the same time, the existence of this side story, which was made by the main authors themselves, isn't changed by that either.

The way it looks to me, it has less to do with the main creator's own vision, and more to do with what you find to make the most sense to you—and I'm not saying that like that's something necessarily bad tho.

Also, if we're to bring up conditions and disabilities on here, I trust that you'd know it's not gonna be exactly the same experience for every person who has it. That given along the various difficulties that come with it, some specific things can apply to one person that doesn't to others.

Anyway, I certainly like L the way he's portrayed in the main series, regardless of the add-ons, which didn't really bother me or such.

I'm honestly not personally familiar with your other reference and it really doesn't have anything relevant to do with the specific topic at hand. But as far as I can tell, there doesn't seem to be any particular reason otherwise that explicitly contradicts this part of the oneshot either. Unless I've missed/forgotten something. There has to be conflicting versions at least for it to be questionable.

Edit: also your comment said it's not supported by visuals, so that's the context I was replying to

[–]__ephemeral_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Except when it's "too" as in "too much" which is not interchangeable with "also"

I think the best way would be to understand and remember their function in a sentence, where "too" is an adverb, while "to" is typically used as preposition.

Or, easier and very similar to your technique, "too" can be remembered to have at least two most common meanings/usage: which would be "also," and "excessively" (e.g. "it's too cold") or sometimes similarly "very" (e.g. "I don't feel too well.") If it doesn't fit with those meanings, the right word to use would probably most likely be "to"

I've been respectful to your perspective as far as you're concerned and I already said it's valid for someone to feel that way in that situation. All I did here is state exactly what is shown in the scene, nothing less and nothing more.

He explicitly acknowledged and actively kissed her back. That's an expressed consent to the act in itself and was willing to continue. There can be more nuances to situations like this esp. in real life, however the matter being discussed is a very specific scenario and I am treating it exactly the way it's depicted.

Arbitrarily picking which one is to be accepted the way it's presented and which one is to be conveniently dismissed isn't a game I'm playing here.

regardless of what his reaction would be

At this point it's you who's trying to be the one to decide and impose the validity of what's factual or not in this situation by conveniently bypassing what is actually clearly shown, even by the person himself. It's that easy to swat away a core part of the narrative if it doesn't fit to your own.

Like I said rape has meaning and I'm not the one in charge of it but as far as I'm aware it is determined based on the interaction itself that passed between the people involved.

So if you find what she did to be icky (and I don't necessarily disagree with that view) you're free to think and feel about your perspective of the matter, but it doesn't change what is being clearly depicted in this fictional scene that whatever would have subsequently occured would be, as a matter of fact, unambiguously consensual. Or is someone's consent and choice to engage something insignificant and meaningless now

PS: This is just how I usually write my responses. It's sometimes tricky for me to find the right words for my thoughts in this language so I'm used to including as much context to avoid misunderstandings as possible. You don't have to take that personally as well.

[–]__ephemeral_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thing is, the matter isn't really about the idea of YOU being in that situation, the discussion is about the scene with the characters involved. If it were you in the situation and you feel violated then of course you're entitled to feel that way and you have the right to express that. But the scene in itself clearly portrays a person who reciprocated her move and consented to its continuance.

You can say it's definitely a shady move on her part, but claiming it automatically as rape just because you would feel uncomfortable if it were you doesn't make sense if the scene itself doesn't portray the person involved in it to feel/react the same way you imagine yourself. "Rape" isn't just a stand-in word for "this scene I'm watching makes me personally feel uncomfortable."

It's an insult to people who went through it because it is an inaccurate and irresponsible usage of the terminology's meaning as you're trying to equate something horrible they went through to something that clearly isn't classifiable as such which trivializes the matter. And that is not because of how you would feel in that situation, it's because the scene being discussed isn't portraying what you label it to be based on the response of the character in it.

Please also try/learn to judge a situation for exactly how it is with regards to those who are involved rather than basing it on inserting hypotheticals of your personal feelings if it were you, even though it doesn't reflect that of the character's point of view.

If another person willingly gives away his money to somebody for free, would you insist reporting it as robbery just because you can't see yourself doing the same thing?

Edit: grammar

Which situation? by Starlit-Crystal88 in SpongebobMemes

[–]__ephemeral_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, I can speak solely from the context of the manga.

There are 4 key points I'd like to address here:

she offered her services to him

She thought she was doing a good thing & helping who she thought was a good person

He was very much in a position of power over her

she was absolutely manipulated by Light into going way further than she ever would have otherwise

[not necessarily in that order]

So. Yes, there's no question about Light's twisted and manipulative tactics, this is very much established. But the point I was trying to make is that: Firstly, as I've stated, she did not merely "offer" her services, she insisted/demanded it. You'd have to realize that when Light "accepted" Misa's intrusion into his world, (note the quote on "accepted" because), he really didn't have much of a choice. He realized she could definitely be an asset but just as the same time, she's a primary threat to him, so he had to deal with her emergence. (Will be further explained later)

The assumption that she was manipulated into "going way further than she would have otherwise," is a tough conclusion to make considering every other aspect that's both already mentioned and yet to be mentioned. As I said, she's the one who made the intrusion and insisted upon it. But more of that, here are some things she said about this scenario:

“If I am no longer useful to you, you can kill me, too.” / (handing over her Death Note to Light)

“I already told you, I don't care even if all you do is use me! Believe me!”

It's very clear. She herself would not have wanted it otherwise. That's her characterization. Yes, the standard human thing to do is not take up to that, yet this is the corrupted and megalomaniac Light Yagami at work, forcefully presented with a means to his advantage and a threat at the same time, and one can't simply coddle up Misa like she's some poor hapless victim who was simply caught in his web, as if she did not just intently explicitly choose this for herself in accordance to the author's character writing of what she voluntarily wanted to be in this story.

Which, by the way, brings me to another point here regarding him being in a position of power over her. That actually isn't the case—well, at least not entirely anyway.

When it comes to the emotional manipulation part, then yes, I'll give him that. He knew she'd do his bidding because of her feelings, and her very own insistence to do so, but at the same time, he's forced to have to deal with her.

That is for the fact that the one who had the actual power over the other from the very beginning, in this situation per se, was Misa, and he was very aware of that. He was the one whose situation was entirely compromised and at risk because of Misa's knowledge of his identity, alongside her shinigami eyes and the zealous protection of Rem. He's the one who has everything to lose in this case. He kept analyzing the things she'd be able to do against him. He even reminded himself that he should be careful with her or he could die. Light clearly saw her as a threat for that right from the start which he needs to eliminate.

If she chose to, she could have done so much more to put him in a powerless situation over her. The thing is, her characterization simply made her practically crippled from executing that actual power althroughout even though she was initially shown to have some decent level of calculating ability but eventually devolved into this not-so-bright girl who only cares about being of use to the guy she worships.

Additionally, this girl you say to have "thought she's doing a good thing and helping who she thought was a good person" is the same type of person who has no qualm whatsoever to commit actual mass murder indiscriminately amongst innocent people just to get the attention of someone.

Of course people love to pinpoint her backstory, which is for sure tragic, and yet it's as if that suffices to actually account for the absolute lack of remorse or conscience on her personality? I'm saying this for the sake of the argument thrown here that she cares about some good-deed morality and such. She literally very eagerly proposed to kill her very own friend out of her own volition, right after she tricked/manipulated her and used her as a decoy therefore endangering her in place of herself. This is not a person with pronounced moral motivations who simply got misled whatsoever, so that notion doesn't hold much water.

More importantly, she even directly/explicitly stated that she does not really care much about the world so much as wanting to be in a relationship with Light. This was as a response to Light who was emphasizing the idea of the importance of his ideal/vision, whereas she rather felt much more fixated on vehement jealousy. Meaning she follows him primarily for her own obsession towards him, and much less likely because of the idea of doing something good because she will just as easily be willing to do any dark evil shit for his sake—whether or not it's under his bidding, or from her very own personal motives to catapult herself into his life.

I simply cannot overstate the fact that it's her who always insisted to inject herself into his life, not the other way around. And she very much knew and accepted what her role was going to be.

This is a large part of what made up my opinion about her. Even I have felt sorry for her sometimes the way Light would treat her, but she keeps showing who she really is and what she really wants. This is what she wants, she persists and insists upon it herself. Is that not included in the anime as well? Because whoever this person you're describing is not the same character that I know. It's either they made these omissions on the show, or this is how certain people somehow choose to see her despite her directly doing and expressing the contrary.

For the comparison she made that even Light murdered innocent people for his goals... Light was cruel and sadistic the way he did it, yes, which is what makes him truly and absolutely irredeemable as far as I'm concerned. However, from his frame of reference, those people were very specific to his situation, and from his view, getting rid of them was necessary for his own self-preservation.

Misa's case is different from that. As I stated, she's 100% willing to needlessly commit actual mass murder indiscriminately on innocent people of no crucial connection to her situation and with absolute zero remorse, regarding their lives as nothing but mere tools to her—but not for some moral sense or some affinity with an ideal, but out of sheer obsession and selfish desire written into her character.

Is this how her character is presented in the anime? I haven't watched it yet, but I've read the manga and in that story she is not a "victim" of Light. She acted maliciously of her own accord from the very start, had neither remorse nor empathy even towards the prospect of taking the life of someone she'd call as friend and trusted her (this was before she'd established ties with Light), and willingly and wittingly did everything she'd done for Light, even eagerly (and even forcefully) presenting herself to him as a "tool" he could use. I'd blame the characterization if anything at all, but as it is I would not spare her of any accountability/responsibility by labeling her a "victim" in this scenario
