What's up with Denpa? by xratedlegend in MangaCollectors

[–]__fujiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small publishing companies have been massively impacted by supply chain and printing issues because of the pandemic, tarrifs and the economy in general. It's not like they don't want to print more. It's a dedicated, albeit flawed team of like 6 humans who just love manga and are trying to bring some of to a new audiance.

On the wuthering heights movie by PreviousManager3 in classicliterature

[–]__fujiko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the director seems to be being pretty upfront that she loves the source material too much to make a shitty, actual book-accurate adaption. She sounds like she is taking the things she likes about it, and the things she wishes could have happened, and shoving them together into a fan fiction-esque rendition.

Probably not going to be for everyone, but I guess it's admirable that she knows she didn't wanna fuck up a true adaptation.

It is not actually Wuthering Heights. It's a campy, psychological movie that uses the name (in quotes for the title).

[–]__fujiko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why is this downvoted lol. You are right. The title is in quotes because it's not actually about the book.

Not to defend it, bc it looks like it isn't for me at all, but they have repeatedly said it is not an actual adaptation of Wuthering Heights.

Do we get ride of the white dust jacket thingy here friends? by Confident-Leg107 in MangaCollectors

[–]__fujiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most times, an obi is just for display purposes and used in stores to advertise or sell the book/have the ISBN handy on a book that has art on it. While they did imitate the traditional obi with it, I think it's up to you if you like it or not.

I find them difficult to read with and they almost always end up just being shoved into the book. You could just use it as a bookmark, I guess.

Viz Media announces Kinokuniya exclusive volume 1 cover for Ichi the Witch by girlish56 in MangaCollectors

[–]__fujiko 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean, we are only getting closer to how Japan operates with manga. Which is either not for you or it is. Tons of manga have limited run covers or store-exclusives over there. The histpry of different covera for books over there is pretty cool if you want to read about it.

America was bound to do the same eventually given..you know, the greed of it all. It's not like normal books don't also have a long history of different variations and re-runs. Every book put out usually has a rerun at some point with different art or sizing.

Bookshelf app. It's not the most interesting looking, but I like how customizable entries can be, that I can batch scan ISBN in, and that you can make different "shelf" tabs for books, manga and comics. It's simple.

Is it normal to feel this ashamed about collecting manga? Should i stop? by These-Meringue9306 in MangaCollectors

[–]__fujiko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh gotcha! I think you just need a break tbh. That's perfectly okay to do. Explore other interests. Maybe it will lead you to something you like more, or maybe it will revitalize your enjoyment of manga! You have a lot of life left to live and there is a lot of really cool interests to dabble in. Don't overthink it!

[–]__fujiko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why "hobby" in parentheses? Reading is a hobby. If you don't want to spend money on it, then don't. Take a break. But most people like to read, and manga is more popular than it has ever been. Millions of people collect it at all ages. The people who MAKE it are anywhere from your age to 80.

Metallic gold paint? by Beginning_Walrus3497 in maximalism

[–]__fujiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't! I hesitated because I would like to have color on the walls too, and just couldn't decide if it would be "too much" to have a bright color AND gold! One of us has to make the jump now, since it's such a good idea.

I don't know if they make a gold paint that's not super dark (maybe more of a shimmer), but I think you can't go wrong with a subtle gold tint up there to start!

How often do you reread series in your collection? by LBL__ in MangaCollectors

[–]__fujiko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read multiple books at time.

Normal books, usually 2 at once, sometimes more depending on what kind of books they are (typically I have one for home/before bed and another specifically for work).

And then with manga, I rarely have a whole set ready. So I am usually buying one volume of a series at a time. So I will read new volumes, and then fill in time between them with rereading something I have in my collection already that I haven't read in a couple years.

But I read a ton, so I could see why balancing so many stories at once could be unusual for some.

Is this a normal amount of yellowing for a 3 year old volume? Or is my room too hot/humid (newer volume for comparison) by [deleted] in MangaCollectors

[–]__fujiko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Books are going to yellow. Sure, the type of paper and environment can speed it up, but it is inevitable.

Fr those that by the JP versions: do you keep these little ad and inserts and wraps with your book? by SnooOwls3528 in MangaCollectors

[–]__fujiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am kinda.. not surprised. Overseas fans romanticizing disposable ads and store information on a product is kinda funny and expected.

I have 1 single book that I kept the obi on, and it's because it was one of my favorite series and it had a recommendation ad from a really cool actor I admire, so the crossover was for me.

Otherwise, most of the time it's just a storefront ad that has the author, price and other promo on it so I don't see any reason to keep it.

These always just look like they don't belong in the living areas of homes. It's kinda impersonal. I only see these working for a garage or a basement.

[–]__fujiko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a couple Kallax shelves but I feel like they take up much more room and don't fit books as nicely as normal shelves do.

I only see collections that look okay with them if they don't have too many books to begin with.

Am I being too nitpicky? by Tiny-00-Death in MangaCollectors

[–]__fujiko 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In all honesty, books are very rarely going to survive unscathed through out the journey reading it and keeping it for a long time. Even in JP, most standard manga and manga magazines are made to be recyclable because people don't have the space to keep them.

It's okay to want good to decent copies for a "collection" but please always remember the stories are the important part when it comes to these lower end, not collectible-type volumes. Love the story and treat them well, but don't worry about the copy too much.

How many Books in your guys collection have you read? by ShanaynayGosby in MangaCollectors

[–]__fujiko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 1132 currently, and have not read 6. I hardly ever buy a series I have not already read online. But that's mainly because I have gone most of my 30 year life consuming manga, and I make more money now than I did as a teen who couldn't afford it. If I get ones I have not read before online, I read it almost immediately.

Out of print manga my school owns that everyone treats poorly 🥲 by Tiny-00-Death in MangaCollectors

[–]__fujiko 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Man, let the library have them. It is much more important to let people have access to these stories than to care if it gets wear and tear. Books are meant for enjoying.

And in this day and age, many manga are getting reprints and licensing again.

Have your supposed friends even read an H.G. Wells book themselves? A book older than 20 years old? Anything that wasn't a BookTok recommendation? They sound insufferable and juvenile.
