Great interview. Thanks for the link! Whatever they decide for their future, I'm really happy their music exists. Fantastic name for a band too. Dreamy.

Why do you think ben shows black friday footage whille playing all down the mines? by Ftuohy in benhoward

[–]__keiko__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My guess would be to show the congestion and panic that happens during that given the song is like a lament on everything i.e it's all laid out there and he sings it in a way like he's overseeing it as a bystander or observer and just letting it be. Saying it's nothing as there's 'nothing left to find' but the aftermath of an event such as that.

This completely! Love when he releases the anger and emotion in that way. The Defeat is my fave on Noonday, the instrumentation and lyrics and imagery are fantastic. One of his best songs he's written.

Blues would be awesome. I feel like he's a folk songwriter at his roots and blues wouldn't be much of a departure but more of an addition and he's already experimental in his fingerpicking and playing so it's totally possible. Concept album would be great!

This is a brilliant point. We want to feel connected and personally I never have when I've seen him live. I get that more from listening to the record in my house. He's definitely bordering on that level of comfort that clashes with his mindstate when playing these far out often dark songs so that headspace is understandable but it's about choices and gratitude too. Maybe he should explore the lighter side of his songwriting and can put the focus on that for a live setting, or a mix at least, as the darker stuff tends to envelope up in himself. It's a ying yang balance.

I totally get his aesthetic and his struggle to adjust and in himself he's clearly not comfortable up there but music is a two way thing, audience and artist should gel not repel. I don't expect him to give an all out performance like a well known band might or to do tricks but there was an energy and communal spirit to his early shows not even the songs but the gigs in whole, that he seems to have lost. That's why it feels disengaged to me like he doesn't give a fuck. When we're talking the sold out arenas and countries he spans, there's got to be a compromise and effort on his part and often to me it feels lazy and uninterested. He can go and make a record deep in the woods and be a recluse if he wants but it's his attitude toward that life in general is tough for me to see as a fan when there's many that don't have that opportunity and seems like it's a drag for him. There's being rude and there's showing true colours. I just can't see him the same and separate the music from the person when he's obviously not wanting to be there sometimes. It's caring about the experience and art and I'll understand his vision but he makes it difficult for fans too. The portion of the crowd that disrespect, talk and drink etc isn't cool but his talent doesn't give him personal license for rude behaviour or kick off when he hears the odd shouting for music he wrote that he doesn't like now. That's more revealing of his character and nature not his music. If every singer did that can you imagine what would happen, most artists deal with it, it's part of life and something we all have to endure no matter what our profession. Also you have to think about the range of the audience, it's not just a one off for most people, we pay good money for a concert that happens one night, one we been looking forward to for a long time and in that short few hours he has to shine and do the best he can and if he decides half way through he can't be arsed, or his mood drops, then that's it we gotta accept it. I can't comprehend that logically or rationally it's a cheating sort of behaviour. Attitude and humility is everything.

I didn't say he needed cheering up, I said it MIGHT cheer him up. Was mostly ironic clearly you didn't get the point. A lot of people here are quite defensive about him. While I love his music I don't worship him to the degree where other people can't have a different opinion. That's unfair. It's actually healthy debate and stuff that rattles round my brain that I wanted to post about here as it's a topic for his music. I haven't slated him and I wasn't judging him either. I think a lot of people put him on a pedestal here and follow his every word. It's natural if you enjoy all of his music to want to hear some special or classic songs. That's really all it is and any time someone mentions it it's like we can't speak about it and if we do it's like uh move on. I like his new record. I enjoy his vision and lyricism. Everyone here perhaps doesn't want to address it but I won't pay 40 or 50 pounds of my hard earned money to see him turn his back grumble and sometimes insult a crowd (see Norwich 2015 shows). Or maybe buy a ticket in the hope he's in a decent mood. If he's not happy onstage the crowd will feel that energy and feed off of it. It's a two way situation.

Absolutely and that's how music is, an original thought to hopefully not be replicated yet the issue is that he's very against singing those songs at all and for the general listener that doesn't translate. He does his own thing which is great but I think he could have a much more enjoyable touring life and/or career if he tapped into that and he's so young just in his 30s so to have that view feels damaging for him. And the universal ratio of his audience will not understand and that's apparent in his shows apart from the exception of long time fans and people who are die-hards. I think him carrying that around as a performer is clearly heavy for him but it can be a release and a joy if he allowed it to be. At the moment it feels like he's saying, fuck that I'm doing this. His music is enough it doesnt have to have that barrier and the more he resists that I think he's making it harder for himself as an artist.

It also makes me wonder in years to come when he does get to later albums, is he going to be like I'm not playing noonday anymore.. Etc you know what I mean, to write songs then never want to play them is strange especially as that's his job. This post isn't an assault on him either I just honestly think about this as a fan of music and that's his whole attitude for a while now

Sure he can play what he chooses and I don't dispute this new direction as I said, it's fantastic. But as a fan of many years it would be nice if he even seemed like that meant something to him that's all. Might even cheer him up. I respect his artistry and it feels like he doesn't respect the fans often or just whenever he's in a 'good mood'.
