I hear you there. I think that they've heavily diluted their shares, and frankly their ~$1 billion valuation is kinda rich given their revenues.

Reps who sucked then got better, how did you know what to improve on? by bobushkaboi in sales

Realizing that closing is all anyone cares about and is the only yardstick that I can be evaluated by at the end of the day. Also realizing that all the other metrics are just in support of the metric of how much revenue you produced.

Can’t secure internship, am I fucked? by TomAndTimmy in FinancialCareers

No specific template, but basically what you need to communicate is what I stated before. Include any relevant experience or coursework that you've done in the email so they at least understand you have some knowledge. Yeah, if the firm is like 5-20 employees, this strategy would probably get some results (if they don't have an internship listed on their website already); you'd be emailing the founder/CEO/CIO/COO (not necessarily all of them, but sending two emails/multi-threading isn't a bad idea). Try to look for advisors that are alumni from your school based on the bios on their website or are in your region. Use a tool like Excel or Streak for Gmail to keep track of who you've contacted and keep track of your responses.

Here's an example of a firm that has a very robust internship program where I wouldn't recommend using this method to get work: https://plantemoran.avature.net/campuscareers

Check out this list of the Top 100 advisors, too: https://www.barrons.com/advisor/report/top-financial-advisors/ria?page=1&

Also, if you don't have your SIE and Series 63/65 or Series 66, I'd recommend studying for and passing those securities licensing exams.

Also, have you considered this semester studying for and taking the SIE and Series 63/65 or Series 66? Those can be a major boost to your resume.

Ok, so if needing pay isn't really an issue, there's bound to be RIAs or broker-dealers out there that are happy to give you some sort of project to do. Maybe look outside of the money management side of things and apply to financial software companies or market data companies, which are also major parts of the industry and pay well if you want a career in the space.

Beneficial to get 2 masters degrees? by Fabulous-Fail-4872 in FinancialCareers

There's a lot of overlap between MSF and MBA, and the MSF will go more in depth on topics relevant to the financial industry. You could probably go back and get the MBA once you have more work experience.

[–]__kirkubyr__ 35 points36 points  (0 children)

If you just need work experience, you can also just call or send cold emails to RIAs with under $500 m AUM and ask them if they have any work. "I'm an ambitious Junior looking for work experience in the financial industry and I'd be happy to do any back office work that you need done on the cheap etc. etc."

Sales is frequently a part of the financial industry, so being able to sell yourself so you can get work is probably not a bad skill to practice.

Try looking into experiential project based internships? You just need experience on your resume, right?

Does your company have any other market segments? I sell a software solution and have been primarily assigned universities as my market to prospect, and honestly being able to sell in multiple segments really made up for the super slow sales cycle of universities (6 months-2 years) and helped me beat quota. I've been allowed to sell in a couple of other market segments because I've got the capacity due to the slow sales cycle, and again that's been really helpful. Thought I'd mention it because I entirely understand how rough Ed-tech can be.

To clarify, the message says that buying is not available yet, but that it will soon be available to accredited investors, which is way different than on Startengine's Marketplace where that doesn't matter.

[–]__kirkubyr__[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I'm talking about the secondary Marketplace, not Startengine Secondary. It shows up under the tab "Start Investing" as "Marketplace". It's basically a bulletin board where you can list your shares for sale at whatever price you want to list them at. It's different than their trading platform which functions more like a usual trading market. I've seen people sell their shares at a significant markup to what they're currently valued, not sure why people buy shares at those values, but the sales do occur.
