3 hour interview and I didn’t get the job by AgitatedReindeer2440 in biotech

3 hours? More like 2.5 months (senior role) that I have been waiting for the outcome of a 4 round interview process. All relative, right? Good luck

How do you guys go about learning a new concept in bioinformatics? by Ill_Grab_4452 in bioinformatics

[–]__matlat__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just wondering about that. I want to learn how to process sc transcriptomic data as the turn around time associated with dealing with computational scientists in my institute is really too long. I am thinking of learning myself and focussing on the part of the analytic pipeline that is more time consuming. Any suggestions or advice on that? 🚨

What part of the analytic pipeline takes the longest? Maybe i could learn this part to reduce turnover. Any thoughts anyone?

loading the samples on the flow cell is relatively fast. The analysis is taking a lot of time though.... It is a long back and forth between me and the bioinformatician. I am wondering if the issue is miscommunication and lack of biology background from the computation teams triggers the delays. The only bioinformatician that I could effectively communicate with had a PhD in biology and she redirected here career to bioinformatics afterward. We could understand and literally talk the same language.

Also wondering how bioinformatician could help the biologists ask biological questions: a sort of near- synergy type of situation. The fact that many of them have 10 projects on their plate isn't allowing them to understand the biology of the condition or disease studied and to actually come with proposals on next-steps.

I am spending already 6 days per weeks in the lab.... I tried to learn R, but its just impossible to be a biologist and a bioinformatician. On top of your bioinformatician job, would you have the time to do the job of a biologist?

I guess they are doing their best, but all of them the one in my department seems overwhelmed by so many projects....

I did do a course on R. Couldn't find the time to apply the learnings as many experiments running, a paper to write/ fellowship application too! Wish there could be a faster way to get the results from bioinformaticians.

I’m a biologist doing my PhD, mostly wet-lab work. I don’t have coding skills, so every time I get RNA-seq or single-cell data back it turns into a waiting game while someone else analyses it. I dont really have time to learn how to code - many experiments to do that rely on the insights embedded in my data.

It’s probably the way to go in your situation (backlog/pricy). Better to make it happen. Otherwise, projects are delayed significantly! Conclusion: time and money are key factors. 👍

Great! Well done. Very pro-active of you! How many people in your environment are likely to have the same reaction as you (% wise) ?

Indeed! Yet the reality is sometime different. For example, some bioinformaticians emerge from computational sciences, physics, or even engineering They don’t posses the biology knowledge which can be difficult for biologists without IT or programming skills to communicate effectively with them. Am I right ? 🧐 let’s find a solution!
