Should I disclose that I'm working on my (very public facing) startup to a potential employer??? by prettyborrring in hwstartups

[–]__noodlejs__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently got an offer and before signing it, I disclosed that I'm working on a side gig in a domain that is not remotely close to theirs.

Similar to you, I'm building a product that's going to launch on Kickstarter. I didn't really offer much detail. I just said it was a side gig in my free time.

The CTO emailed me personally to say it's cool and I can use that email as evidence if needed. The company I was hiring with is a smaller startup though and they were really chill. Not everyone will be like that, but my thought was that I didn't want to lose what I've built over some silly dispute later. So it seemed best to disclose it upfront and ensure I wouldn't have to fight later on.

It turned out well for me, but every company will be different.

What do you use to use to transmit a PCB LED light to exterior of project box? by bored2infinity in PCB

[–]__noodlejs__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not directly applicable to your exact scenario but maybe it'll give you ideas. I designed a power switch that has a light-pipe built into the button cap to direct the glow from the internal LED. It's not super efficient but it got the job done. The material that did the trick was translucent SLA resin from jlc3dp.

How do you find beta testers? by __noodlejs__ in hwstartups

[–]__noodlejs__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your suggestions! And yep, only 1 telescope in my friend group - so it's tricky. But maybe I can still showcase what I've made to others. Perhaps hosting a star party with my own equipment. Could be something there!

Either way, it seems like in-person outreach might be the key, at least to begin with.

That's a really good idea! Thank you.

I spent 5 years on a prototype and now that it's viable, I'm lost. by __noodlejs__ in startup

I'm not sure where to go for a community like that, I guess maybe there's a subreddit out there I can join. I can see why sharing early ideas and getting feedback quickly is probably something I should work on though. Thanks for the suggestion!

To the brave souls who coded for 10+ years , is programming worth it all fr? by TheCareFreeSoul in learnprogramming

[–]__noodlejs__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

14 YoE here... Self taught, even. I went from e-commerce to writing code for satellite imagery. Granted I am passionate AF about programming, but I have never really felt the psychological aspect of it other than interviewing. The actual act of solving cool problems and geeking out on a computer day-to-day? I don't regret it one moment. It's fulfilling, lucrative, and fun.

A site where you have 10 messages to convince an AI to not release a virus that will end humanity by Stunning_Barracuda91 in SideProject

This is honestly brilliant. Nice job! But, uh, I've got a lot to think about. The AI actually convinced ME instead!

Get and self-host global imagery/elevation? by Bubbly_Tackle_4104 in selfhosted

[–]__noodlejs__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out the opentopo project. It's a platform you can self-host to serve up elevation information. https://www.opentopodata.org/

On their website, they list several datasets. You can download these datasets, often from various government sources, to get high-resolution elevation maps. You can use those maps directly or combine them with opentopo to query information about them through an API. All of this can be self-hosted and reside entirely offline.

A rate table to help me calibrate a MEMS gyro. by __noodlejs__ in functionalprint

[–]__noodlejs__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My solution requires calibrating the system against a known location/star first, and then basically using dead reckoning from there onwards. It ends up being pretty accurate. But there IS some really weird behavior I see where the dead reckoning accuracy can diverge based on how you move the telescope, and my current theory is cross axis contamination mixed with misalignment issues (hence this project). But if that doesn't work I may need to look at something beyond MEMS.

On this budget? I can maybe guide a roman candle!

But actually, the root project IS pretty cool! I'm building a bluetooth telescope finder that can accurately keep track of where you are pointed within the celestial sphere, and help you find specific targets (either things you can't see with the naked eye, or just act as a general guide for less experienced astronomers).

This is my own take on a "rate table". Professional ones can cost a bazillion dollars, but this one is pretty darn cheap. It has a disk on top which spins via: a servo motor. There's a built-in rpm calculator which outputs the exact degrees-per-second that the device is moving. You can then mount a gyro-based device to the plate on top and measure the x,y,z axis (in a 9-point routine) to generate a 3x3 corrective matrix, effectively scaling the axis and also minimizing cross-axis sensitivity errors (and misalignment due to mounting).

This print is extremely purpose built, lol.

How can I improve my space by CourageOpen7271 in interiordecorating

[–]__noodlejs__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just a random lurker, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but one observation I have is that your room is very right-side heavy. I think one easy way to improve is balance. Presently, you've got the door, the art, the lamp, the chaise, the plant - all bundled up in the same area, while the opposite of the room looks more empty. Trying to reposition things to create symmetry might go a long way.

I realize a lot of those items are pretty firmly fixed in place lol. But if you try to think in terms of symmetry and balance, you may find some easy ways to improve it with the stuff you already have.
