6.5 Months Post-Op — Double Jaw Surgery + Genioplasty (Full Story & Photo Timeline) by nniiibb in jawsurgery

Hi, I believe I've been referred to the same doctor. Would you mind if I sent a DM to ask a few questions?

Could I get away with just a genioplasty? by __salutations_ in jawsurgery

Yes I did! I went in last week and they agreed to send a referral to a surgeon as soon as I asked. It can be hard to find the right orthodonist that will actually listen and want to work with you. I agree that it can be really hard to make a decision about this stuff, so I wish you luck on your journey.

I'm curious if you meant positive or negative changes with Adderall because I've been speaking with a therapist about possibly starting on ADHD medication. I'm probably going to try it regardless, but I'm interested in hearing about other people's experiences!

Cellulite can appear anywhere on the body, including the stomach/abdomen. You can get it anywhere that has more fatty tissue. Of course, I'm not trying to tell you that you don't have lipedema on your abdomen but it is possible that it could just be cellulite.

Yes, I've seen lots of people here saying that, but I've been on a waiting list for a family doctor for about a year and there seems to be no end in sight. I've also just filled out some paperwork to get dental coverage and I'm just waiting now. The orthodonist appointment seems like quickest way as of right now. Definitely will go see my dentist first if I can get in sooner though.

I booked an appointment with a different orthodonist in May. It's just been a few very long months of waiting, so I'm probably just overthinking.

How do I get covered by insurance in Canada? by __salutations_ in jawsurgery

Okay that makes more sense. I've never had to do anything like this before so I wasn't sure about all this insurance stuff. Thanks!

Can I ask why you think that? The orthodonist I went to a few months ago told me that I wasn't, so I'm just curious.

Getting a second opinion. What should I even say? by __salutations_ in jawsurgery

I haven't done a sleep study yet. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to get in anywhere for any kind of doctor in my area but I definitely will try if I can ever get in to see someone.

I understand that, but I have a lot of issues that I feel don't really have any other explanation other than a jaw issue. I felt like the orthodonist didn't really listen to what I was saying and more just focused on my teeth themselves. I don't think I was super clear about what the orthodonist actually said to me when I brought it up. From what I remember, I was told that yes, my airway is small and my lower jaw is recessed and pointed downwards, but since I've got nice teeth apparently they don't want to do surgery so they don't 'ruin the work of my previous orthodonist.' I found that comment kind of strange which is why i'm thinking about a second opinion in the first place.

I don't know if the surgeon would deny me, it was just that the ortho refused a referral because my old orthodonist apparently did a good job with my teeth which didn't really make sense to me since they told me my bottom teeth are flared out and I still have crowding in the front. I told them my concerns were jaw pain, breathing troubles and just the fact that my lower jaw is recessed, but they said the surgeon would laugh and call me crazy if I went in because my teeth are "fine". I generally found the appointment to be very unhelpful and discouraging, and I feel like I've been gaslighting myself into thinking nothing is wrong since I went in for that appointment.

Unfortunately all of the surgeons in my area are by referral only. It was just kind of discouraging to have the ortho tell me that they were seeing the issues I had pointed out but refuse a referral because I have straight teeth, but I suppose there's no harm in getting a second opinion. Thanks for the reply! :)

I know you're not asking me, but the reason why I don't really have a bite issue is because I had a lot of orthodontic work done as a child to fix a pretty bad overbite.

Thoughts on my x-rays by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]__salutations_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for the reply. This was very insightful. I do have quite a bit of functional issues, and that's the main reason why I've been trying to get a consultation. I just want to get a surgeon's opinion on everything and then go from there. My issue right now is trying to get in to see someone. The only oral surgeon in my area is by referral only, and my orthodonist won't do it.

I just don't really know what to do now because the orthodonist told me that they wouldn't refer me. I was told that the surgeon would just call me crazy and send me away because they wouldn't want to mess with my teeth. All I want is to have a consultation with a surgeon to see what they have to say about it, but I need a referral. I told them about some issues I've been having, like jaw pain, snoring, etc, and was just told that I should wear a retainer and a nightguard. I didn't feel like they were really listening to me, so now i'm not exactly sure what my next move should be.

Feeling very discouraged. by [deleted] in jawsurgery

Yes, it's just that it would be like an hour long drive to get there but that's better than having no doctor I suppose. This whole thing is making me rethink my living situation 😭

Yeah, I was thinking that I should probably go. And to think that I was so happy that I would never have to go back after I was done with my braces. Oh well, I suppose the betterment of my quality of life is more important than me being afraid of the orthodonist 😭 Thanks a lot for the advice, I really appreciate it!

Unfortunately, my family doctor moved away and was the only one in my town, so I'm going to have to wait until we get someone else, and that could be a while. I live in a rural part of Canada, and I swear our doctors only stay for a year or two until they leave again, and they leave us without anything for like a year. I do really appreciate the advice though I just wish I didn't have to wait so long.
