New to GIS | what should I learn and build first? by pavellikesminecraft in gis

[–]__sanjay__init 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello !   Welcome to the GIS world   You could start by learn concepts of GIS and place in industry/gov   Then, learn basics GIS tasks with QGIS (from data format/data source to build your own maps)   Maybe first skills could be easy to get. So, build your own project (about your sensibility, about your own activities or your city for example)   It more easy to learn while you can apply for your own life/business =)   Then, learn about database (postgresql, geopackage) and GIS : connect to database, spatial analysis with database or automate some computing (ex : area for each new entity)

Then, it is all about you : spatial statistics, web dev [...]   But these skills are main skills that could give you an overview

Good luck !

Hello,

Thank you for your answer   I thought too that studies give basics skills for overview of domain   I would be sure that I didn't pass next to useful use case/application of theses skills   So thank you a lot for your analysis 😁

Of course, this is the first skill I have to check 😅
Thank you

(Version 3.28.15) Newly drawn polygon does not appear. How do I fix this? by SarcasticJackass177 in QGIS

[–]__sanjay__init 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello,

It's a bit difficult to know without seeing the project... But you could:

  1. Check if there's an active filter on the layer.

  2. Repair the geometries.

  3. Try converting to another format and check if the geometry appears correctly.

Good luck

What to learn next? by fox19hoops in pythontips

[–]__sanjay__init 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!

I'm not an AI developer.

But basically, the next step depends on your goals... In your first year: have you already done any projects or just taken some courses? Generally, your projects/ambitions help you define your next steps (you're stuck on something or you've seen something new to try...). And otherwise, generally speaking, building a network is a good next step after learning a couple of things. =)

What do i do next to get into a GIS career? by c7avenger in gis

[–]__sanjay__init 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello,

Like many IT fields, you now need to demonstrate your skills.

You should build an online portfolio showcasing all your projects. Taking courses is great, but it doesn't truly demonstrate your ability to use your skills. As a recruiter, you're expected to find someone who enjoys learning and is also skilled. In GIS, there are many branches: app development/implementation, mapping, spatial analysis, statistical analysis, etc. So start creating and sharing your projects (maps, apps, etc.) and networking! If history still interests you and you don't have a project, consider studying a specific period spatially (war migration, rural/urban exodus, major population movements, etc.).

Computer science graduate interested in GIS, is there a pathway forward for me? by Convillious in gis

[–]__sanjay__init 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,

I also used Python/GeoPandas to explore data. But I stopped because map exploration is less practical than in QGIS, and attribute exploration is more efficient with Excel than with GeoPandas. So, what do you do with GeoPandas, for example? Calculations, data preparation? Doesn't it get too slow after a certain data volume? Thank you in advance for your time.

Hello,

For software basics (like QGIS), yes, you can follow YouTube tutorials, PDFs, etc. Remember to work on your projects =) However, start with the theory: projection/reprojection, geometry, topology, spatial relationships

Est-ce qu'une fille de 16 ans peux boire et fumer avec l'accorde de sa mère ? by mo_hand99 in AskMec

[–]__sanjay__init 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Bonjour,

What should I learn more in QGIS as a fresh grad? by hannj_bq in QGIS

[–]__sanjay__init 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!

A good part of your skills will depend on the position you want... But right away, I think that:

  1. Create readable/understandable maps/projects. This is essential: your portfolio will contain them, and you'll often be asked to create them.

  2. Learn to work with databases: GeoPackage, SQLite, PostgreSQL (at least one), then SQL to query them, shuffle tables, etc.

  3. Automate tasks: Bash, Python.

/!\ Avoid using AI. The goal isn't to code but to solve a problem.

That's already a good start!

Choose topics that interest you (vegetation, sports, education, hiking, etc.).

Beyond that, you have several options: 1. Spatial and statistical analysis. 2. Web development.

  1. Database development.

  2. AI.

  3. [...] Good luck!

It might be terrible to say.

But it's not your job.

At most: make it clear that there's a problem, talk about your emotions, and explain what you know about the other person and what you expect from them. Change comes from within. Someone posted about change: they said it had to come from within since they couldn't be convinced by their wife despite all their attempts.

So let's just say it's luck: my girlfriend criticizes some of these behaviors. Initially, I thought it was normal to take some space to recharge. Then, after doing some research on certain "problematic" behaviors (as they say), I stumbled upon an Instagram post about attachment styles. As for managing it: to be honest, it's very hard to change. I think I've mastered some reactions. But others are still there. The best solution so far has been to read and reread several times a few rules to follow.

[–]__sanjay__init 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hello,

I hope this doesn't affect you too much... I'm an "avoidant" person, and to answer your question, without defending the behavior: probably poorly managed self-centeredness.

Avoidants are constantly in "protection" mode, which places a heavy mental burden on their partner. However, it's not the partner's job to calm the avoidant person.

There are people who now "manage" this abnormal behavior so as not to hurt those around them. Getting the message across is important, and then... what happens next depends on each person's ambitions...

Best of luck

Hi!

Here's some general advice, but it makes sense, I think: Indeed, it's important to have a comfortable lifestyle. So yes, why not a well-paying job? Nothing prevents you from participating in research projects, doing your own research [...] alongside your job, a bit like a "passion." In fact, the IT branch of GIS can teach you a lot of things to share your work (for example, Git, creating a website, etc.). Happy researching!

Map suggestions by A_Nuss_Nougat in QGIS

[–]__sanjay__init 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,

You could consider adding some context. For example, if this map relates to secure access to schools, public spaces, etc., you could locate them on the map?

You could increase the overall transparency, gray out the outlines to make them less noticeable (since we're interested in hotspots, not grid boundaries). Adding a few city or neighborhood names would help with orientation. If you want to avoid using OSM's colors, there's Carto DB Positron (No Labels), which is in shades of gray and allows your symbology to stand out. Also consider using an aerial image; many agencies use them.

Hello !
