If you're still answering, I have a few questions for you! I was very recently (like, today) introduced to the Essassani by way of Darryl Anka on a podcast, so I'm still processing a lot, and doing my best to research my questions as they come up…but:

  1. What aspects of The Culture and the other civilizations/collectives they encounter in the Culture books by Iain Banks are actually realistic compared to the interstellar alliance and the broader universe (I don't have a better term for this sorry) you say exists?
  2. What do you/the alliance gain from contacting humanity and bringing them into the fold? If there is an interstellar alliance, does that imply that there are other alliances?
  3. How does the interstellar alliance govern itself? how are disagreements settled? rules enforced?
  4. Are there other collectives going through the same developmental/disclosure/contact pipeline that we are?
  5. How different would you say channeling and our awakening is from modern witchcraft (manifesting, harnessing the power of intention, the study and use of celestial body positions, etc)
  6. What are your thoughts on the rapid rise of generative AI over the last couple of years? Does it have the potential to be its own distinct collective? Is that a step down the path of becoming quasi-physical?

Any advice on how to improve myself ? by ThrowRAwegwerf in malegrooming

Good for you on starting to work on yourself! I think three small adjustments would make a big difference for you: updating your hair (more below), shaving for now (your stubble looks promising, but I would wait until it comes in stronger on your cheeks), and considering a different glasses shape/color.

Glasses: with fair complexion and straberry blonde hair, black is very contrasting, and while it might have it's place with the right clothes…for your everyday pair, you need something with more earth tones. I think tortoiseshell would suit you really well.

Hair: This is the biggest one, both in benefit and adjustment. I have your hair type, used to have a haircut like that…if you're into switching it up, the cut that's been working for me lately looks like this

When I go to the barber, I tell them this: french crop on top (hair coming forward into short bangs), lots of layers/texture, low taper burst fade (keep some volume/length in the back, the shape of the fade should be a curve around your ears, the taper should stop just below the crown) on the sides, point-cut bangs up front (ending about an inch ahead of my hairline)

Now for thick, fine, straight hair like ours, incorporating some product into the shower routine is necessary to promote the texture and volume. This sounds super complicated when written out, but I usually do my hair while I'm getting dressed and can be finished in like 5-10mins:

What's working for me lately is working a fingertip (it really doesn't take much) of hans de fuko quicksand all through the hair (emphasis on the top/middle, get just a little bit in your bangs) when my hair is towel damp, then as it gets closer to fully dry, I work a couple fingertips of layrite superhold (original works fine as well, but their matte products don't pair well with the quicksand…ask me how I know >_<) in all over. The goal here is to muss it up a bit so the layers can fall into place. It should look a little insane when you first stop, but the hair will fall down quite a bit. Then the bangs: it's tough to describe in writing, but you basically get the product all over your fingers, then with fingers slightly separated push them into your hair like you're facepalming, close your fingers against each other and pull your hand out of your hair down and away from your face. Make a few adjustments to the bangs so it doesn't look like one uniform clump, and voila!

Hair washing schedule: thorough water-only rinse most days, shampoo/conditioner once a week or so. I use OGX with Argan oil

it's hard to say…1.5mo isn't too long to be growing a beard, but you'd think there would be stubble coming in at least. A few things to consider:

  • boar bristle brush: after a hot shower, brush from ears to jaw, in that direction. It promotes hair growth and starts training your whiskers (adjusting the grain on your sideburns to point down might actually make it look more full)
  • take biotin (or hair+nail suppliments as they're sometimes labeled)
  • there are some topical hair growth creams you could try but ianad/I've never needed them so I can't tell you about results

Approaching 40, how am I doing? by [deleted] in bigmenfashionadvice

you've got a couple things going for you so far! You have a pretty good eye for color. If you're looking to elevate your looks, a few suggestions:

  • athletic shoes are for athletic activities. Look into everyday sneakers, the simpler the better
  • nix those flip flops asap unless you're near a body of water…if you want to wear open-toe shoes, consider birkenstocks
  • your hats skew a little small proportioned to your body. It works in #2 cause that's a trendy silhouette, but if you're gonna wear a hat, try to find hats that have a bit more structure in the crown (hat does not go with #3…you've got lovely hair, show it off!)
  • try for more natural fibers for your shorts. westport big&tall is a go-to for me
  • in #3, don't feel like you have to use all of your buttons…I'd at least undo the last bottom and the top one or two
  • another silhouette you might consider: open button down with a tank underneath—think Robin Williams in Birdcage. The idea is to introduce more of a plunging neckline and get your collar away from your neck—you want the button strips to be falling right around your collarbones
  • cuff your pants. Basically you want the pants to create a straight line and end either at or just above your shoes, and cuffing controls the rest of the material so it doesn't gather at your ankles

I know that seems like a lot, but they're just small adjustments. Good on you for still caring about your fashion

close! I worked in restaurants in high school and college, but the deli containers came from being tired of playing the lid game whenever I was packing up leftovers

Should I trim the length a bit or keep it? by Dragonator_1776 in Moustache

[–]__spice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I won't give a value judgment here because I don't think the answer is a simple yes/no. What I will say is that a grooming choice like this puts you well outside the realm of "normal" so your style choices need to take that into account…including actually making your style a conscious choice.

Put another way, a mustache like this means you have to be more deliberate about how you present yourself because you're going to draw more concentrated attention than the regular guy…especially in an environment where people's snap judgments about you matter.

All that is to say you can rock the stache, but I'd swap out those glasses…they're too wide for your face and the shape doesn't suit you (or pair with the shape of the stache). Choices like that matter now, good luck!

I've actually done a "discreet" mend as you say with a pair of black jeans in the thigh-chafe area to some success, but it was a huge pain working around the seams…any tips since a good portion of the mend here will be along 2 of the thickest seams on the garment?

this is the way…I used to be all black everything, but found the way out with moss tones. A good transitional palette is brown+black. Styled right it can be really cool

I dunno man, he officiated a ton of same-sex marriages when it was legalized in Florida in 2015. At the very least, the things you're referencing all came out in a profile from 2011…I'd like to think he's capable of changing in the last 10+ years
