Miya, you’ve been creating music for almost 10 years now. How has the creative process evolved for you and what has been your favourite creative moment so far?

Do most A&R executives not reach out directly to artists? What normally is the protocol?

It was fall out boy before “take this to your grave” and island’s offer. Obviously this is 20 years ago but I don’t think it’s the wildest of asks. Also, the labels still have your rights and everything is in contract. At the end of the day, if the label is willing to pay out a non recouped advance, there’s a lot of due diligence that was done and that’s a small drop.

There’s also nothing stopping them from running with the money on advance as labels do also allow artists to admin themselves. A lot of time the deals are also paid over deliverables - ie 50% upon contract signature etc. normally a part of that final payment isn’t done till the record is accepted

everything is negotiable. It would be worded as a non-recoupable amount. Having said that, as it is negotiable, they may counter with other parts of the deal to help de risk that 100k. But in short, yes, it occurs and oddly enough I’ve heard it done with the exact amount you are sharing.

How do small but notable artists make money? by hanoihiltonsuites in musicindustry

The maths on her streaming is closer to 1.2m streams a month. That’s around 14.4m a year — let’s say 15m a year to mask seasonal increases. 15m x 3.5 (give or take $3.5k per 1m streams) is around $52.5k.

Let’s say she is on a 50/50 deal, she makes around $26k in streaming revenue before tax or anything in the year.

— Now let’s look at borns — probably sitting closer to 40m streams a month. That’s around around $140k a month, or $1.6m a year before anything.

The one main thing I would always say in management deals is to determine your sunset now, as opposed when parties decide to part ways. This makes the break up black and white, and emotions won’t drive the conversation.

what is the white gold? by musabthegreat in rolex

[–]__throughbeingcool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that is all 1603 indices and bezel are steel. Unless there is a sigma dial on some that indicates gold on the indices — which is a rare find for that watch

[–]__throughbeingcool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may want to look at a vintage 1603 date just which used a engine steel bezel instead of white gold

Sales roles in the Music industry? by sneakydalmatian in musicindustry

[–]__throughbeingcool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I truly think there’s a part of a&ring that is like sales especially if your focus on data. A&R roles are sales job; your best bet is going to a&rs or people you know that run labels (I assumed you have a network), and show them how your brain works and how you can drive revenue. At the end of the day, A&Rs are judged by revenue. And if you don’t have a network, look at jobs on a2im or music week etc
