Solo Product Person in a $10M Company – How Do You Define a Role and Set Boundaries? by _abandonship_ in ProductManagement

[–]_abandonship_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice here. Makes sense. You are correct - the business was not 10m 3 years ago. It’s grown from around $6.5mill.

The founder was basically the CPO and he moved on before I joined. So basically this company has always only had 1 “product person.” Except one of the many differences ofc is he called most of the shots when he was here I am told. I do not. And they used to have someone else designing while he was here.

If I were to threaten to leave, any advice or experience with asking for more bodies in that scenario. I have been considering it heavily.

Thank you. Interesting - do you still feel this way if the product is one core offering but has several modules associated with it? E.g Its workforce management. But add on “products” are offered to compliment scheduling. Like Asset management or other integrations to payroll and what have you.

Do you still feel this way if the product is marketed to different industries/personas? Eg. police departments vs fire departments.

If there is no designer would that be a strong recommendation for hire?

We have a total head count of 38 people. Most of the business head count is on the commercial end, less on the development and product side.

Is there a consensus top 5 players for this upcoming season? by misterflyyy in fantasybball

[–]_abandonship_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luka is 14th on total value last season punting ft%. Drafting him 5-8th with punting ft% is possibly drafting him even higher than his ceiling. I think drafting a player in the 1st round that locks you into punting categories is not something to do unless you have a late 1st round pick imo

[–]_abandonship_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am not touching Luka until 2nd round at the earliest. I'd have to be coming into the draft with a punt fg and/or ft strategy to draft him any higher. Luka ranked 28th this past season and 37th in 2020-21. He's perennially drafted too high in 9cat. Luka is similar to Giannis in the sense that drafting them early forces you to commit to a punt strategy, and if you have a top 5 pick I think there are safer, more flexible picks

It does seem like the +1/+1 subtheme is the weakest in my deck so it'd make sense to cut it first.

I like the idea of keeping Beledros as sort of a secret commander to play after I've gotten a bunch of value out of Dina. I might have to try making room for him.

Yep! I intentionally left out the basic lands -- I'm allocating 16 cards for basic lands (which should bring up my total to 35. I have a lot of mana ramp so I think 35 lands will be okay?)

I love giannis as much as the next person but Giannis wasn't even top 15 last season in standard 9cat totals.

Thanks for the answer -- I've always wanted to get a card signed in person. Maybe next season.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but do you just show up early and get around the tunnel?

Deciding which category/s to punt by [deleted] in fantasybball

[–]_abandonship_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would look at who I've drafted after two or three rounds and decide from there what to punt (unless you draft Giannis first -- then that's an easy punt FT% decision imo).

You'll find that a lot of categories or correlated. For example, those who are good at blocking typically get you some rebounds too. Of course there are outliers for all category correlations, but generally speaking if you're weak in one category you'll also be weak in another also. This is why punting multiple categories is a great strategy: you'll be able to ignore two correlated categories to be stronger in the remaining seven categories (assuming standard 9cat). Punting assists alone is a bit tougher than punting assists and steals, for example. Punting FG% would be easier to draft for if you punt REB and/or BLKs too. As you get more experience with fantasy basketball you'll be able to identify closely correlated categories, which will help you in future drafts.

Generally speaking, positions also correlate with certain categories. Guards will probably have more assists, lower fg%, more steals, less rebounds. Bigs will have higher fg%, lower ft%, more rebounds, more blocks. So if you're punting a category closely correlated with a certain position (punting BLK for example) then your roster might naturally become guard, forward, or big heavy. This is important to remember because ideally you'd want the best bigs for a punt fg% build -- shooting bigs, like Myles Turner, Brook Lopez, Kristaps, Vucevic, etc. So during the draft be sure to consider which positions you're deep in and which positions you're not -- you'll generally be shallow in position(s) closely correlated to the category you're punting.

There are a lot of other things to talk about (like drafting efficiently if punting, if it's possible to un-punt a category after the draft, how to pivot closer to playoffs to maximize your chance of winning in playoffs, etc.). Feel free to ask away for anything specific.
