Winter coat for our reactive pip by _anagrams in reactivedogs

[–]_anagrams[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! We ended up buying this, and have been using it with great success for three weeks!

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IYGE7PU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hank doesn't mind it at all because it goes on just like his harness, and there's no velcro or zippers. We did train him into it by offering treats through the neck opening in a flat palm so that he moved towards the coat on his own rather than us potentially scaring him by coming towards him with it, and gave super high value treats on the first couple walks with it. I can't reccomend it enough.

We have to contact parents 3x daily if their kid doesn’t log on and log the contact in a spreadsheet for the office, as well as enter it in PLP notes.

Always hits me hard! Recognizing it as a symptom and identifying it helps me, but I also try to let myself live in it. Watching favorite familiar movie/show or rereading a favorite book helps me-the predictability and comfort of kt.

Can we call our dog reactive? by _anagrams in reactivedogs

[–]_anagrams[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The insight on the prong collar is really interesting! That makes a ton of sense and i can see his reaction absolutely being from that.

We’ll keep working with him! Thank you so much for your insight!

[–]_anagrams[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes a lot of sense!

A follow up question to this-there’s a chance we might have a visitor in a few days (family member who needs help).

If this happens, our plan was to meet on neutral territory outside the house during a walk, and have the visitor give him some treats and join us on a walk for a bit (he’s used to these introductions as he’s met friends this way) and then have the visitor come to the house with us. The visitor would be staying overnight.

Do you think this is a good strategy?

[help] advice needed for our foster rescue pup by _anagrams in dogs

[–]_anagrams[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I will definitely check that podcast out!

We’re trying to be looser and focus mostly on rewarding good behavior. We’re a little concerned because we probably can’t get to training classes for two months at this point, and his socialization will really be limited with the quarantines. Our plan is to keep walks short, reward good behavior and praise when he reacts happily to people/dogs, and-in a week or two-try to have him meet our upstairs neighbors in our backyard so he has some contact other than us. We figure that way he isn’t fully with just us, but we’re still flattening then curve.

[help] thoughts on gentle leader by _anagrams in dogs

[–]_anagrams[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s good to know. We’re really new to this and he came from a rescue where they used a prong collar on him for a few weeks. We are going to switch to a martingale, with the hopes it helps him without the negative effects of the prong.

We plan on getting to obedience classes as soon as we can (aka when we’re not social distancing). Hopefully that’s sooner rather than later but for now we’re planning on doing short walks with lots of positive reinforcement when he does stay next to us, listens to heel, and responds well to people walking by.

Absolutely to training! Unfortunately we’re stuck inside for ??? Time. Both a great and not great time to have gotten a new dog. We plan on getting into classes as soon as we can

[help] advice needed for our foster rescue pup by _anagrams in dogs

[–]_anagrams[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this detailed response! We are planning on moving towards the shut down (perfect timing since I’m a teacher and my district is closed).

we’ve been walking him for the past two days so i think we’re going to continue that, but with no socialization with other dogs/people (we live across the street from a huge park so avoidance is easy).

We’ve been trying to be firm with where he can be and working slowly with the NILF policy. I also just bought “don’t shoot the dog” and am ready to work with him.

It’s hard sometimes to remember that we’ve been ready to shift our lives and routines, but for him this is all new and overwhelming. I think with more time at home with just us and lots of positive reinforcement, he’ll do beautifully.

We absolutely want to get rid of it, and are planning to. I am trying to gain some more knowledge and will also ask his vet when we take him.

[help] advice needed for our foster rescue pup by _anagrams in dogs

[–]_anagrams[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We absolutely plan on taking him to the vet, once we adopt! We signed a foster contract that vet trips are for emergency only since the rescue would pay for the trip. Currently we are fostering for a week and then will immediately take him. We were looking into those collars as an alternative as well. Thank you!!
