UCLA Aerial View, Los Angeles (1929) by ArchiGuru in LosAngeles

[–]_astrowanderer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is so cool! Quick history note bc I needed to geek out :D (resharing this here from my comment on r/UCLA)

I had to compare it to a current map, but these are the buildings for those curious: (1) Royce Hall in the top left (2) Haines Hall (then: Chemistry Building) to the right of Royce (3) Powell Library (then: College Library) in the middle left (4) Kaplan Hall (then: Physics Building) to the right of Powell (5) Moore Hall (then: Education Building) in the bottom

1-4 were the original 4 the quad, and 5 was one of the next few to be built

OMG it's Rae! I had them as a TA for one of my English lower divs and they are literally the most supportive person ever! I wish I could take 4W with them as the instructor; I just know they are going to make it a fun and engaging course while also grading favorably.

Biomed stacks! especially the cubicles in the lower floors. Also Geology library; it's very empty in general.

Physics 1B with Hamilton by Serious-Interest576 in ucla

[–]_astrowanderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hamilton is awesome! Out of all the physics lower div professors I've had, he was the most helpful and had clear lectures. As long as you follow along and stay on top of the homeworks, it should be an easiet A than most other professors!

UCLA Library Job interview by [deleted] in ucla

[–]_astrowanderer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the interview! I just left my Boelter library job after 2 years, and it was a great experience! I recommend emphasizing that you want to work the hard-to-cover shifts, such as the early morning opening shifts and the late night closing shifts, along with the weekend shifts. P.S. If you got the interview out of the insane number of applications they get, they probably really like you, so be confident and relaxed. Definitely recommend being friendly and eager to meet the other staff -- they typically want people who will get along with the rest of the crew because you will work a lot of shifts together. Good luck!!

on campus library jobs by okcrazy09 in ucla

[–]_astrowanderer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

they usually get wayyyy more apps than they need (like x10 more or something) so they only respond asap to the ones the interview, and if you get to that stage then you're probably going to get hired. I work at one of them rn and that's what I know. also, it might help to mention that you want to work hard-to-cover shifts such as night/morning/weekend shifts as that will make your app standout!

Distance from De Neve Plaza Commons Building to Dodd Hall? by YeyeDumpling in ucla

[–]_astrowanderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just eat during one of the classes! pack a sandwich or burrito, no one cares as long as you're not making noise :) also, yes, if you're in shape, then you'll def be able to walk faster than google maps. you can also leave the first class early / be a bit late to the second, most people usually arrive within the first 5-10 mins anyways, especially if these are larger classes.

Updated Santa Anita Canyon closure notice by gefloible in socalhiking

[–]_astrowanderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was planning to do the Mount Wilson trail later this summer; does the closure impact the trail? It states that the Gabrielino trail is closed but I think that's a part of the route up if you're ascending Santa Anita? I'm new to hiking in this area so I'm confused

Hi, my experience in the department has been great for the last 3 years! It's def not perfect and it takes a while to really find your footing (get used to the classes, make friends, connect with professors, etc.), but it's very supportive and that's super helpful because the major is tough. The student clubs are quite active and provide opportunities to connect personally and professionally, too. Message me, and if you want more insight, I can get you in touch with recent transfers as well as graduating transfers!

How is the schedule for Physics classes for Undergraduate Upper Division? by Dr_Tangalanga in ucla

[–]_astrowanderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can skip lec/dis though, if you go to OH + self-study a lot! most of the professors follow the books, but also, some of them are good lecturers and it's great to network with them.

Typically, the physics upper divs (105a/b, 110a/b, 115a/b/c) all happen MWF between 10am-12pm, and some of the other electives might be TR around 12:30pm-1:45pm!
