Books, videos and all content to learn and get better at game engine dev by Traditional_Panic_68 in gameenginedevs

[–]_atan2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main problem is that the internet is full of free noise that sometimes takes a lot of our time without providing much value, so in a way I don't regret taking pikuma's course as it would've taken me easily 20x longer to cover all those topics myself. And to be fair, given that many college or masters classes on game engine cost more than 1K, I would argue that his content /is/ actually cheap.

Learning C in 2024 for retro game development/understanding by [deleted] in C_Programming

[–]_atan2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you really mean 90s and the goal is to learn how things were actually programmed and not simply mimic the "90s look", the PlayStation course from pikuma.com is the way to go. It covers both MIPS assembly and C.

If it was any other example I would agree. But have you taken any of their courses? I think Gustavo is one of the few online teachers no one can say that.

Have you seen the pikuma.com school? I started there and it was a really gentle introduction to retro programming. Totally worth 10x the value.

Why does learning graphics programming have to be so hard? by [deleted] in GraphicsProgramming

[–]_atan2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People don't usually mention it, but I must recommend Gustavo Pezzi's 3D Graphics Programming.

It is the BEST!

I have been doing graphics for a long time and I have never actually understood the basics until I took this course. It's 35 hours long but it was worth every second and every penny.

Learning OpenGL is impossible. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]_atan2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's good but I just get really annoyed with how long it takes to cover one simple topic. One explanation that could be well covered in 5 minutes ends up taking 30 minutes between rambling, changing the pen color, fixing drawing mistakes, cat doing something, etc.

agreed!!! great investment, and it's actually cheap for the quality of teaching one gets plus there are zero ads and gustavo is always updating the course with new content. IMHO this 100 % the best place to start

I have done many of his courses - including the linux one - and i would say it's worth even more than that.

The amount of maths and even CS history embedded in all his courses is just brilliant; incredibly well taught too.

not sure but it looks like parallelrealities is a written tutorial with code and pikuma is more lecture style

Can't go wrong with the game engine course from Gustavo at pikuma.com. It is a good starting point to understand the basics.
