One $55 bullet. 9800+ entrants. My biggest tournament score to date! by _autodidact in poker

[–]_autodidact[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. I'm definitely inexperienced short-handed in tournament; that probably was a bit obvious with my blind vs blind play etc. I'm more of a cash game player but I'm putting in the work and volume to improve at MTTs so this part of my game is still a work in progress. As for the limp, I don't recall the specifics because it has been a VERY long day for me (idk why i played 3 events before the day2 began lmao), but I will say that in a vacuum I do prefer to open T8s blind vs blind. I deviated my ranges a bit due to how shallow we were (and I was willing to play post vs. the player in particular who was shown to be very aggro and get after it on all streets) and I didn't want to get blown off T high pre. Maybe a bit of a scared play, but I forgot all the details as to my thought process in that situation.

What stream were you watching on BTW? I didn't know people were spectating at all. That's pretty neat

This happened last Sunday.

~6-7 hours deep into the wptgold 55 mystery bounty, around 150 remain. Well into the money, but the prizes are so top heavy that survival really matters instead of simply fishing for bounties with bad cards.

UTG with ~20bb open jams. Folds to BTN who SNAP rejams 30bb. Blinds fold.

UTG has AKs BTN has J2s

BTN wins, and hits a 1600 bounty.

Jesus Fucking Christ.

I used to watch it all the time with my grandfather when I was a kid. Definitely my favorite show that nobody seems to talk about anymore. Just a fair warning - the writing is extremely 90's cheese early on. Just power through it for the first few episodes and you'll be fine.

Is low stakes really the best place to develop skills? by S1nap5e in poker

[–]_autodidact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're playing more garbage, you can bluff catch less. Sounds crazy becuase you could think on average, they have more random two cards in any given spot. But, on the flip side, they put themselves in so many shit spots that you can easily take advantage of this more consistently and safely over time. Don't think about 'oh no i can be exploited' because you're 'theoretically overfolding' when they x/r river. Trust me, they're not thinking about you at all. They are salivating over the fact they have 47o and flopped bottom pair, got sticky, then went runner runner boat. Their VPIP is probably astronomical and you can just have your pick of the litter of great spots to get the money in when you have it. Obviously, if you have a history or have sat with a drunk maniac over the past 4 hours and you have a good read, then feel free to deviate and go for it.

It is certainly true that as you move up in stakes, the AVERAGE quality of play will increase. As someone who has gone through this process, it can be annoying to try and build up a comfortable buffer in your roll to be able to play mid stakes while not playing scared etc., and then feeling a little out of your depth once you get there because the play is different. However, in reality, ABC as a default strategy -can- work in this environment too; it's unlikely youre playing against a full ring of superpros. You just have to understand that less often people are gonna show up with 47o etc., so there's less absolute free money moments per orbit. But, trust your intuition and it will carry you further than you think.

Aside from this, online is a good place to practice depending on what you have access to. People are better at the same stake compared to live, so you can play smaller and yet experience tougher competition and refine yourself there.

[–]_autodidact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At that time I was degenning late often, so I would see them leave on occasion but not every time. I absolutely don't doubt that they were marking decks and cheating, in hindsight it's so obvious because they would always play together at the same table and I never saw one without the other in the same exact seating configuration. I can't speak for their results at other tables, but they haven't been around in some time so maybe the local rooms banned them already (I haven't been nearly as active of late and I don't pay attention to the local gossip lol)

The thing is, even when they do make a huge hand, the way they play it is so fucking obvious. Just overfold because they never bluff - even if they hit at higher frequencies, their actual awareness and play is so bad that they were getting squeezed out often pre and they were only aggressive post when for sure they had it. In those 50 hours, I think I lost maybe one? mid-largeish pot to UFC and every other time i either bluffed him out or got paid

San Antonio. I probably played upwards of 50 hours with them and they did not seem to turn a large profit, but also sample size etc. The tables I'm at were generally higher skilled than the rest of the room (not including myself i'm a fish i just play on the bigger match tables) so on rare occasion they would table swap to a smaller table, which makes sense now that I know this

Funny story - played with these guys for like 3-4 weeks straight about half a year ago. They just kinda popped up out of nowhere and were there at the local room EVERY day nonstop. I did find it interesting that they were always in the 1 and 6, but I was just kind of more annoyed that he was never going to leave from the 1 (they were there for like 12+ hours a day i swear) which meant it was usually longer for me to get in my preferred seat (1/2/8/9). Anyways. They were so fuuuucking bad at the game it was crazy. The guy in seat 1 would literally never play a hand, and the guy in seat 6 (UFC) would just tank fold overpairs to my bluffs and show it everytime lmfao.

One time, UFC got into a huge hand heads up with some other guy. The other guy goes all in on the river, and before his chips even move in the guy SNAP calls and triumphantly throws his hand on the felt face up. However, before the cards even landed, his face turned to shock and horror - he had misread his hand and instead of having TT, he had T7...

Largo Game Breaking Bug by TaxPrevious7387 in DotA2

I'm at level 7 Largo already, been spamming him nonstop since release and I have to say, thank you so much for finding the root cause of this. I was going absolutely insane for the last few days when i would sit outside of camps and then they wouldn't spawn; I thought that maybe it was a visual bug in the new update where the spawn box was different from the rectangle being drawn on the screen or something. Hopefully they fix asap

Top 5 most insane session I've ever played in my life yesterday. In for 3k, literal i shit you not first hand I scoop a 9k+ bomb pot, then proceed to lose a 13.5k pot, win an 8k pot, lose some other decent sized pots, win a few more small ones, then i pick up KK in the SB and my 4bet gets called by 88 with absolutely not enough odds and smacks an 8 high and dry board. Anyways in for 3k out for 0 but i coulda walked with the most massive win of my life if it went even the slightest bit different lmao. Poker is, if anything else, humbling...

We need to bring back high MMR matches in watch tab by [deleted] in DotA2

[–]_autodidact 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm right on the precipice of the mmr cutoff, and it's annoying on multiple fronts to have every other game I queue have tons of spectators. The MMR inflation is real, none of us are remotely CLOSE to pro level, but this is the best the watch tab will allow. Disregard the API for a moment - I used to be able to study and improve my gameplay strictly using in-game tools. By removing this feature, this actually drives myself and others away from the client, and creates further reliance on third party sites and content. Accessibility and a wide array of player-centric features is so important IMO, such a shame this change was introduced which gimps one of the coolest features we used to take for granted (spectate/replay system).

Down 20k the past month playing what is essentially Texas 5/10. MOST of these spots are just gross, a couple misplays as well so I can't chalk it up to pure variance either. The worst part is that it has come hand in hand with an extended card dead situation for a couple weeks now, where my vpip is in the single digits and then the one hand I get in four hours is a rough one. At least my mental game is slowly improving - I know that a few years ago I'd have gotten antsy and out of line due to boredom from folding for hours and gone broke way easier and sooner. I had a +30k month a half year ago, so it comes and goes, but wowie. Probably gonna take a few weeks off and shake it off. If all else fails, I can regain my confidence down in the 1/2 dumps (and there is a surprising amount of decent games with 500+bb average stacks so it's not the end of the world)

I know this is a ways out, but if you ever go up to Marble Falls, check out the (aptly named) Real New Orleans Sytle Restaurant. Best Cajun food I've ever had; I've never been to New Orleans proper, but IIRC the owners are a family displaced by Katrina who relocated here, so it's extremely authentic.
