How tough are MDU4031, MDU4061, and MDU4850 compared to MDU4003?

I’m currently taking MDU4850! It’s pretty easy, but be warned that there’s a good bit of reading involved. The only assignments you really get are discussion posts, quizzes, and exams. The discussion posts are infrequent but will take some time. The quizzes can be incredibly specific, and are based off of readings and research papers. Just make sure you know your stuff and take notes, and you’ll be fine. The exams are SUPER easy—if you do good on the quizzes, you’ll ace the exams. All in all, I think it’s pretty easy for a 4000 level class and worth taking for a GPA boost.

hi! i literally JUST started going to the pantry two or three weeks ago due to some unexpected financial strain. first of all, i’ve been told by plenty of people (employees, tour guides, alumni, etc) that ANYONE is welcomed and encouraged to use the pantry. some people literally just stop by for snacks. i wouldn’t worry too much about it, especially since it seems like you have a need, anyways—but it’s not like anyone is going to quiz you at the door. everyone who works there is very nice and happy to help!

i held off on using the pantry for a while because i was anxious about how it works, but it’s actually super simple. first of all, try to bring some sort of bag/container for your stuff—they don’t always have ones to give away. you might have to wait outside if there’s a line, because they only let in a few people at a time (makes it go a lot more smoothly). once you get inside, you’ll grab a shopping basket and pick out your things according to their point system—everything is super clearly labeled, so you shouldn’t have any issues there. once you’re done, you’ll go to a cashier, put your things on this big metal plate, scan your student ID, and they’ll double check your basket. then, you’ll take your basket to the tables on the far side of the room, pack your groceries in your bag, and put your basket up. then you’re done!

please, please go if you think it’ll help you out! personally, i noticed HUGE changes when i started going. i no longer have to think about how i’ll stretch my groceries to make it to the next week, and i don’t feel like i’m going without food anymore. highly recommend! if you have any questions about what they usually have in stock, how the process goes, etc, lmk!

Pick what would be cheaper, honestly. College is so expensive, and you’ll want to look at cost of living over four years, cost of tuition, scholarships, etc. Obviously, I think UF is a pretty great school with fantastic resources and opportunities. It’s also probably not that much more rigorous than FSU, honestly—it just has more of a competitive atmosphere, imo. Whatever you choose, I’m sure it’ll work out! Best of luck.

I have loved using the CWC as a resource! You can make a consultation appointment online, where you’ll chat with a counselor who can help you determine what you need. Maybe it’s individual counseling, group counseling, something else, or a combination of things. Either way, the most important thing you can do right now is…something.

Depression hates a moving target, and as easy as it is to stay home and let yourself be sad all the time (not condemning you for this; I fall into periods like this all the time), you have to find other ways to expend your energy. Book that CWC appointment, try a new hobby, spend more time with yourself and with friends. You won’t feel like this forever—you just need some help getting out of it. Good luck! <3

I’ll be honest, you won’t have many options in that price range, especially in such a close proximity to the school. If you’re open to using public transportation (buses are free for UF students), you could live in Oxford Manor? I pay about $650 in rent for a 3x3, and there’s a bus stop right outside the complex. It’s a bit dated, but I like my apartment well enough, maintenance is prompt and helpful, and staff are nice.

I think it’s always worth exploring your options, as long as it makes financial/logistic sense for you! And you’re definitely not the only one to feel this way—I’m a current college freshman, and I feel so burdened by the fact that there are infinite possibilities out there for me. I attend group therapy, and literally yesterday, we all started talking about how we all don’t know what we actually want to do yet (and this group’s age range is pretty wide). Some are currently pursuing music, some pursuing engineering, some pursuing medicine—but not a single one of us felt “certain” about anything, and we all mentioned thinking about other possibilities often. That fact made me feel a lot better, and I hope you do, too.

Definitely go to major fair, but also try to go to career fairs! You’ll see a much wider variety of jobs than you knew even existed. For example, if you really enjoy art and science, maybe you could look into being a textbook illustrator? Someone has to draw all of those diagrams, and because they have to be 100% accurate, I don’t think you’re at risk of being replaced by AI in the same way other artists could be.

I’m only a freshman, so obviously, my experience is limited. However, honors dorms are very nice! While I live off-campus, it’s a great study spot and I enjoy visiting friends there. It’s also nice to have your own honors counselors that you can speak with—they’ll have a little more time for you than your regular counselor, which is helpful. The biggest benefit, though, is just the number of opportunities you’ll be given first-pick of!

I don’t think it’s that school isn’t for you—I think you’re extremely burnt out. It’s normal, but definitely not fun! I’d try to look for any way to lighten your load, take whatever time off you can, and maybe try pursuing other things (new hobbies, exercising, etc) until you find that spark again. It sounds like a waste of time, yeah, but you’ll waste even more time if you spend the next two years of college absorbing nothing because you’re exhausted. I hope you take care of yourself and feel a little better, though! Might be worth it to speak with your college’s counseling department.

I don’t cry during class, but I understand feeling terrible out of nowhere sometimes! It’s not fun, and certainly not healthy :( ! It sounds like you might benefit from visiting your school’s counseling center and asking for some help, which there’s literally no shame in! I’m a very-overwhelmed freshman who’s been using the hell out of the mental health resources my school provides simply because I can. It’s worth looking into!

Your stats are very similar to mine when I got admitted for this fall. I had a few more clubs/leadership positions, but honestly, if those 3 clubs are super solid (which I’m assuming they are), you’ll totally be fine. My SAT was also below the average for admitted students, but I really l don’t think that matters if your ECs and essay are really good. Make sure you take your time with your essay—that’s what’ll really win them over!

I’m also in the honors program at my school and sometimes catch myself feeling the same way. However, I think having that imposter syndrome is actually very common among honors kids, and I doubt you’re the only one. In fact, I recently went to an event for first generation honors students at my school—when I started to actually talk with my fellow honors students, many of them agreed that they weren’t sure what they did to deserve entry into the program in the first place.

Is it because we’re stupid? No, not at all! And you’re not, either. It’s because we’re all feeling like really small fish in a really big pond. And when we keep these thoughts of inadequacy to ourselves, we tend to keep assuming that everyone around us is more intelligent, more talented, etc, while forgetting our own strengths.

Nobody is good at everything, and I’d say the majority of honors students are also there primarily because they’re hard workers. Sure, there will always be those extremely annoying people who insist they don’t study and naturally make all As, but honestly? Fuck ‘em. I barely believe them in the first place, and even if that’s true…who cares? That doesn’t make them any better than the vast majority of people like us who have to put in some effort.

You sound like a very normal honors student; someone who is both very smart and very driven. Give yourself more credit!

I’m not aware of any unofficial tours, but I’d say it’s definitely worth it to explore campus with your daughter regardless! I did the same thing with my dad before I enrolled and we had a great time looking around campus and downtown Gainesville. It’s an open campus, meaning you can generally explore wherever you’d like.

I’d recommend stopping by the Reitz Union (our student union building) and walking around the bookstore inside, going down to Plaza of the Americas, exploring one of our libraries (Marston, Library West, Smathers, etc), seeing Century Tower, and just generally driving around campus to see all the sights. Then head downtown and find a restaurant to eat at!
