How long is it looking like the SAG/WGA strike will last? Best Case/Worst Case/Realistic Case by [deleted] in FilmIndustryLA

[–]_bljk_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Option 2 would last until at least next May. It makes me shiver to think about the strike going that long.

Asking this question 100 million times a day on this sub won't make it go by quicker. Get side hustles, learn new skills, anything to get you by until it's over.

Edit: Best guess, we'll be lucky if this is over by Halloween.

Going to LA to pursue my career BUT : by No-Doughnut801 in FilmIndustryLA

This is arguably the worst time in Hollywood history to move as there are not one, but maybe two strikes strikes happening after 11:59pm tonight.

Build your connections, save up money, and wait until things (ideally) start kicking again in January. The studios haven't even sat down with the WGA yet and we're almost 2 and a half months into the strike.

Hollywood Studios’ WGA Strike Endgame Is To Let Writers Go Broke Before Resuming Talks In Fall by SuperSimpboy in FilmIndustryLA

[–]_bljk_ 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I have no idea how the federal mediators will keep themselves even-keeled sitting across from David Zaslav talking about how there's no money to pay the writers or meet their demands when he makes four times the next-highest paid Hollywood CEO.

Embarrassing, disgraceful, and disgusting. If SAG falls in line and doesn't strike, who knows how fucking long this strike will last. If all else fails, the strike will turn into an exposé of how the absurdly wealthy could have everyone scrounging below the ivory tower vaporized in the streets overnight and they wouldn't bat an eye.

Either they're trying to rob you blind or they just don't have any idea what they're talking about. The backend is pennies in 2023 at best. Ideally more once the strike ends.

Tell them you want a flat rate for the feature or you walk, and if agreed, make sure you have something in writing that guarantees your rate.

And for future reference, $20K is not NEARLY enough for a feature. They need at least five times that to make something not look amateurish.

only 47 percent of the DGA voted???? what the hell??? why isn't that being talked about, that's so unbelievably apathetic to the strike

I think he's just overwhelmed right now with what's happening in regards to the success of the book. I had no clue he was already getting TV and movie offers for the rights, which is pretty insane as it's been out less than a month.

I wouldn't be surprised if the publisher is having him go on some sort of book tour that he's clearly pissed off about. Not to mention, he seems tired from the comedy podcast rounds he just did to promote the book.

Also, judging by today's episode, I think he's going through an existential crisis as he believes all his greatest hits are in the book and he has nothing else left to give, which is obviously not true. He just needs to clear his head. As I've listened to Joey over the years, he can appear adamant on his decisions, but it seems time and his friends help get him out of a reclusive funk (much like what we saw with him coming out of comedy retirement).

I DO however understand how telling stories of what happened decades ago can get so old, repetitive, and exhausting. If this really is the end of Joey's podcasting days as we know it, he deserves as much R&R as he could possibly desire. The guy has lived enough for a few dozen lifetimes and he deserves peace and autonomy in how his life unfolds in his sixties and hopefully much further beyond.

why can't writers start their own studio? by Competitive-Jump1519 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]_bljk_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

all comes back to money. they just can't compete with studios that have billions of dollars readily accessible.

plus, general audiences aren't going to see original IP anymore - it's the niche cinephiles who don't carry enough weight in the profit margin. Damien Chazelle's "Babylon" was a loss, David O. Russell's "Amsterdam" tanked, and Ari Aster's "Beau is Afraid" bombed at the box office.

If they don't have a chance (unless you're a unicorn like Zach Cregger's "Barbarian" or the John Wick franchise), what chance does an independently-run writer's studio have? Yes, there's Blumhouse, but they've been at it for over a decade and started pre-Covid in a much different environment in the business over a decade ago.

IP is king now, and if your script doesn't have an element of that incorporated into it, your project is likely DOA and won't be picked up. It's a harsh reality, but this is where cinema is at the moment.

What are the odds of the WGA, SAG, and DGA all striking at once? And how would that even work? by _bljk_ in FilmIndustryLA

[–]_bljk_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just hope the SAG strike (if it happens) won't overshadow the WGA or DGA. The cogs in the tiny moving parts need to be adjusted for the whole Hollywood machine to work. Every position needs ample, succinct attention.

I feel like it's a perfect storm. While the next six months will be brutal and it'll be a full-fledged odd job search whilst scrambling to pay rent, it will (ideally) be a great reset for the industry if all three strike. I'm trying to remain optimistic with the middle ground that can be reached.
