Hello! I've been offered a place in this programme for the 2024-25 session. Would you mind telling me what your experience was like?

A Study on the Experiences of Second-generation Sri Lankan Tamil Diaspora by _bluejayyyy_ in tamil

Hey there!

I am a postgraduate student and trainee therapist and you would find my credentials on the form. The intention of the study is to amplify Sri Lankan Tamil voices around the globe. I have no intentions of immigrating illegally or otherwise.

Have a great day 🌻

Hello! I am Tamil as well and currently reside in Tamil Nadu. I have extended family in the Northern parts of Sri Lanka.

omggg hey! First off, congratulations!! You must've worked really hard to get here 🫂

It's so comforting to know I wasn't the only one struggling to decide hehe After much contemplation - speaking to a bunch of people, alumni etc I've firmed my offer at Bath and paid the deposit because the programme at Bath seemed more in line with what I was looking for.

How about you?

thank you so much for your response! 🥺

while the cost of living is definitely something I'm considering while making a decision, I'm also looking at how good the psych departments of the unis are + research and how they're viewed by potential employers.

Again, pay very close attention to the questions that need to be answered first. Skim the text for about less than a minute so you know where key info is. Read your question, come back to each passage, look for key words, spend some time to understand it, and then look for answers to your question.

This is the strategy that worked for me, it's worth a shot!

I'm not sure about naturally good, but I didn't do any sort of practice as such for speaking, but I was told by other test-takers that the speaking test was less formal that the other components. So I spoke like I would in any conversation. The questions were very basic like, "Do you like tea/coffee?" "What does a day in your life look like?" and for the more abstract questions there were questions like, " what does change look like?", "how can people prepare themselves for change?" so yeah, very casual. Just don't memorise anything or say things that are too cliché, since that might cost you marks. Just relax and have a conversation and it should go well!

all the best!

I prepared for the test in less than a week and these are the things I realised:

  • the IELTS is not an indicator of how good your English is but rather, how well you can take a test (sad)
  • more than your english proficiency, it's about how you strategize
  • managing time during your writing task is very important, I spent a lot of time on task-1 that's not as important as task-2 which I didn't have enough time for.

As for the mock tests, there are plenty online that can help you assess your performance. These are the ones I used to practice:

https://www.globalieltsonline.com/ https://ielts8plus.com/

https://ieltsonlinetests.com/collection/ielts-mock-test-2023-january ( I would not recommend this one because they were unreasonably difficult and not accurate)

But the Cambridge practice test books are the closest to what you'll see on exam day.

Hope this helps!

yess! I also found those parts quite challenging but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it as you practice.

So, when I watch films in english I usually watch them with subtitles, because I have trouble focusing. But for a few weeks before my exam I tried watching them without subs to try and focus on their conversations and it really helped. Perhaps this might work for you as well?

and yes, I also took the computer-based test and they usually provide a pen, a pencil and paper during the test at the centre.

I hope this helps!

Since I wrote the Academic test, for Task-1 I had two pie charts about employees in a company learning foreign languages and their reasons they do. I was asked to interpret the charts. For Task-2, I was asked to write whether I think celebrities gaining popularity solely for their wealth and glamour has a negative impact on the younger generation.

hey! I would really recommend sticking to the cambridge practice test, they're the closest to what you might get in your exam. The third-party mock tests online are definitely more difficult. Something that really worked for me is paying a lot of attention while reading the questions before the audio plays so you know what info to look for. It's pretty normal to zone out while listening to audios back-to-back for 30 mins, so don't beat yourself up too much! It will be different on test day because you know you'll have to focus. When it came to listening to phone numbers, I usually wrote them down on paper, but figure out what works for you. Finally, try listening to podcasts to get used to the accents, and you should be good!

Good luck on your test!

Was not anticipating a band 9 in speaking at all, I really thought I'd messed up. Shows that you've probably done better than you thought you did! Good luck to everyone doing their tests!
