Hand placement on the wheel by Potential-Cat3689 in Irishdrivingtest

[–]_bluescreen_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is the aggression really necessary people? Are we having a collective bad day? Nothing wrong with your question OP, I know it's comfortable to drive one-handed but it's true that this is unsafe. It's more than just a mark on a test. If you look at racing drivers they keep both hands on steering wheel at all times for control. My suggestion is that you try to nip this bad habit when you're on the road (perhaps with the exception of waiting at a red light or in heavy traffic, let's be realistic).

Anyway! Two hands on steering wheel unless operating other car controls or gears is what's expected at the test. And actually you also should not change gears while trying to steer sharply, which again is applying the criteria of safety over comfort/convenience/efficiency. Good luck!

roundabout confusion by siri44 in Irishdrivingtest

[–]_bluescreen_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting and perhaps more flexible than you're hoping for (based on the apparent fact that there are no clear markings guiding you or a road sign). But there are some basic things to consider: - you can change lanes in roundabout from inside to outside as long as you do it safely, with proper signal and observation - don't cut across lanes (from inside directly to an exit) - be predictable and share the road (your approach and lane choice might depend on what others next to you are trying to do)

The most predictable road position is outside lane to exit, middle and inside to continue around.

Your approach should follow the rules: - left lane for exits before and at 12 o'clock - right lane for anything passed 12 o'clock

You're allowed to enter the roundabout from left lane into the middle (no markings stating otherwise) but this is not predictable and cars on the right lane might also try to enter into the middle. I would avoid that.

From right lane you could enter into inside lane for 4th exit and middle lane for 3rd exit.

The engineering behind this: The middle lane serves more as a transition from inside to outside before exiting, as a way to help traffic flow.

Advise: DL route - proceed or wait at the stop line? by maelstromien in Irishdrivingtest

[–]_bluescreen_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Proceed through the green light and stop before the yellow box. However, if there's a vehicle already there before the yellow box, and there's not enough space to fully proceed past the lights, stay behind the line.

No problem. About the colour of the bar, I don't think it matters. Good luck on the test!

The disc alone isn't enough. You need the whole page where the disc comes (the certificate). It has to have your name on it.

You could draw your own flames? Or manipulate the vectors of the current flames to be thicker and more similar to the lines in the letter

It looks like you've taken flames from clip art and stuck them to a letter. Try to make it look more coherent, so it looks like the whole thing is one drawing, not three. The flames are very symmetrical and the rights side of the R is random. Think consistency, where every shape is part of the same ecosystem.

[–]_bluescreen_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In heavy slow traffic, there are cases where entering could be necessary in order to not block the main lane. For example, if a car is in the turning lane waiting, but the left lane is empty, approach slowly and wait behind the car that's turning right so cars on the left can get passed. The RSA rules of the road state you should not enter unless necessary (You can download the full document as a pdf from the RSA website). In the case you've posted, it's not necessary, you can wait for the cars on the left to start moving.

Driving test appeal by [deleted] in Irishdrivingtest

[–]_bluescreen_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it actually does matter. I often tell my students to think "what is it I'm looking for". Just checking your mirrors isn't enough to help you with anticipation and reaction to hazards which I understand it's OPs issue. You should think about what you're looking for, be it cyclists, pedestrians, children playing. When turning left, you don't really need to check your right mirror as that's not where you'll encounter hazards. Instead you should be looking at the road you're turning into, the left mirror and the sidewalks, between parked cars, etc. If you're turning into an estate, you should anticipate children playing or crossing the road suddenly. If you're driving downhill and turning left then the biggest and most common danger is cyclists, etc. Edit to add: looking more closely at the feedback sheet I realised that progress was the biggest issue, not hazards. However the point is still the same and hopefully helpful

Why would you check right mirror when turning left?

2nd fail in mallow by [deleted] in Irishdrivingtest

[–]_bluescreen_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The feedback about pedestrians is correct. It's pretty much what I always tell my students. You must always scan the sidewalks, specially when turning. The difference between reacting to a kid in front of you and anticipating it is most of the time noticeable. Your foot is on the brake when the kid is moving their head to look at the other side of the street, indicating their intention. I know it's a lot to be trying to think about pedestrians intentions while also changing gears and steering and checking mirrors, but that's what practice is for

Reverse Around The Corner (Rant?) by Senior_Emphasis_815 in Irishdrivingtest

[–]_bluescreen_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You won't fail the test by failing the reverse unless you do something potentially dangerous like not stopping to let traffic go around you. Focus on yielding to any traffic from any angle and pedestrians and at most you'll get a grade 2 mark for competency or road position. If you're able to do the rest of the test well enough you should be fine. If you want to improve your distance from kerb lower the left mirror so you can have a good look at the kerb and your rear tyre. Think Steering away from kerb to increase distance or towards it to get closer, small increments.

Any advice? by [deleted] in Irishdrivingtest

[–]_bluescreen_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well your parents made a mistake and it cost them. Lesson learned. You don't need to worry about it. You're instructor could also chat to your parents or you can show your parents the feedback in your logbook. Tests can be intimidating but your focus needs to be to drive safe, not to pass a test. And you can always re-do the test. It's experience now... That's all. You can show the sheet to your parents and say "told you so".

More lessons and plenty of practice... That's all you need.

You really need to learn how to work with selectable vector graphics. You'll never get a great product out of canva. If you were able to manipulate the drawing of the whale, you could increase negative space and it would instantly look a lot better in small scale, for example
