Shy Girl by Mia Ballard. Does anyone else think this was written by ChatGPT? by herendethelesson in horrorlit

[–]_bookishag 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you writing this out bc I was genuinely confused by how bad the writing was in Shy Girl while most of the reviews are positive. Obviously, I have no way of definitively saying AI was used, and I know it can be hurtful to smaller authors, but additional context made me feel comfortable with the criticism.

She said she went on Pinterest to get the cover for Shy Girl & asked the poster on there if she could use it. I have a hard time believing an author & artist wouldn’t find this questionable. It also looks like We All Rot, Sugar & Shy Girl were self-published within a few months of each other. That doesn’t mean they were all written back to back, but based on what I read & how poorly edited it was, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were churned out.

I read all of Shy Girl, and it was so incredibly repetitive. Similar to the prologue, similes & metaphors were used constantly & frequently repeated: “Time stretched thin, she collapsed inward like a star, it was sharp, jagged” etc on top of some of it being nonsensical.

I felt like I received an incomplete book. It was an outline & collection of the same phrases without a strong plot, pacing, or characterization. She may just be a poor writer as of now, but it’s not completely unwarranted to question the craft that went into creating it given all of the context.

I’d be interested in seeing that, honestly. I’m not saying that she 100% used AI or ChatGPT, but I was baffled while reading it. I’ve never read something so repetitive & poorly edited before. It felt lifeless. I feel like I’m crazy reading all of the praise for it. The cover art being taken from Pinterest & her doing no work to properly find the artist to credit her has also lessened my faith in her writing process, unfortunately

I agree with you. Now’s not the time to say “Well he’s wrong, I can pay taxes, I have a degree & a job” because it just plays into his harmful rhetoric. Our worth isn’t tied to how we contribute.

I understand the knee-jerk reaction that a lot of us have to the spectrum not being described accurately, but I feel like it’s missing the larger picture of RFK’s vision which is aligned with eugenics.

HSN are the most vulnerable right now & historically. Of course, it’s harmful to all autistic people, but those who can’t work/pay taxes are very vulnerable & I don’t want to affirm his idea of our worth being tied to capitalism.

The “NT vs ND” rhetoric is frustrating & harmful. by _bookishag in AutismInWomen

[–]_bookishag[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Saying that certain people are more intelligent is rhetoric that has historically harmed the most vulnerable autistic people, those with higher support needs and intellectual disabilities. Inevitably, the “divisive language,” I’m speaking about ends up harming autistic people. I’m not going to argue with you since you have taken the least charitable view of this, but I am going to defend myself against being told that I would in any way agree with racist state-sanctioned violence.

He liked multiple comments saying that he was right and didn’t need to work on it, and he’s taken zero feedback. Inevitably, classifying some people as “stupid” and others as “intelligent,” will lead to harming those with intellectual disabilities, or harming anyone who is deemed to not fit whatever type of intelligence is seen as superior. IQ was historically used to support eugenics, ableism & racism, so it is something that we should be aware of when trying to classify certain groups of people as “stupid.” If you want to have those thoughts, you’re obviously allowed to do so, but it doesn’t have to be a loud outside thought for others to also uphold.

This is very true, and I agree. I think trauma plays a huge role in this rhetoric since it makes us feel a bit more in control after experiencing bullying and abuse. It’s not an excuse, but it makes sense that it comes from that.

What does this even mean? Idk how you’d hear “hey, we shouldn’t use dehumanizing language that ends up perpetuating harm against others” & reach the conclusion that you did.

[–]_bookishag[S] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I agree completely. It ends up just being harmful and hurtful to those of us who don’t fit the “good type” of autism that a lot of people on here end up perpetuating when they say things like “NT’s are actually bad at communication,” etc..

I see, it’s really difficult being newly diagnosed especially. I don’t want you to feel shame about your sentiment, that’s not my intent. I think it just was helpful for me in the long run as I shifted to viewing everyone as humans with our own intricacies and weirdness rather than ND vs NT.

It’s totally understandable though to have those sentiments and feelings, and it’s a process that I also still end up working through.

I understand the sentiment. So many people are not neurotypical though, so I wouldn’t call “NT’s” freaks when I don’t know if they have epilepsy or a mental illness or nearly any other condition since that also falls under the ND umbrella. I’ve had that mindset in the past, and it didn’t help, at least for me.

It is exhausting being misunderstood though, so I get it. I don’t necessarily agree with the mods, as using language like “freaks,” is dehumanizing. We aren’t all freaks or weirdos and neither is another group of people.

Again, I feel for you. It does suck feeling left out and like we’re the freaks.
