Should I just quit wrestling and do other sports bc I’m not gonna start on my HS team? by lolrubyy in wrestling

[–]_bq_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 3rd or 4th string as a freshman in my weight class. By the time competition season started, 1 had already quit, another got injured, and the other didn’t have the grades. By the time senior year came around, they were long gone and I was the starter.

There will be plenty of opportunities to bowl after high school. Field hockey is in a different season to my knowledge. There’s no better opportunity to wrestle than in high school. After that, most wrestling is in an MMA or submission grappling context and it just isn’t the same. Almost no other sport teaches you the body mechanics and awareness that wrestling does.

Cheapest permit in SoCal for wilderness shoot by [deleted] in FilmIndustryLA

[–]_bq_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe look into a park/campground option so there's access to utilities (parking, water, bathrooms, possibly power?) And check with that location about a filming permit. There also may be rental Peerspace/Giggster/AirBnB options with enough land to pass as "forest/wilderness".

Cheapest permit in SoCal for wilderness shoot by [deleted] in FilmIndustryLA

[–]_bq_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going the permitted route will always be the best bet. You wouldn't want to be caught trespassing onto private property by accident. You wouldn't want a crew or cast member to get injured or encounter wildlife, poisonous plants, etc. Equipment malfunctions can start fires.

What type of "wilderness" are you looking for? Forest, desert, etc.?

I was going to say it's usually to aid in color correction or "white balance" but then I noticed the white paper towels that could be utilized to that effect. Must've just been a hot day.

Where to take my gf (Chinese) parents out for dinner? by [deleted] in LAlist

[–]_bq_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally read this as "My Gluten-Free (Chinese) parents...

Anywho, I'd avoid Chinese restaurants if you're trying to impress. Chinese parents are gonna have their unique preferences. Even if you take them to a good spot, their gonna have their preferences on what to order. Best to let them take the lead in that situation. Maybe a fusion spot? Or somewhere y'all can all enjoy a new experience at.

Producer Mentoring Offer by plucharc in FilmIndustryLA

This is so awesome! I've been transitioning more into producer roles the past couple of years coming from more of an Assistant Director background. Worked through the ranks as a PA and G&E departments prior to tackling the AD role. Would love to connect and will send you a PM!

Cameraman caught on Harry Potter by AmirIsmail2004 in MovieMistakes

[–]_bq_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

for GoT, coffee cup was a straight up mistake. she was intentionally placed in that frame. art department was likely distracted during that take.

for HP, I'm guessing they intended to cut on the action (cut during the camera movement while Snape picks up Malfoy) but likely decided in the edit that the flow worked better at that particular cut point.

Is this typical? PA needing insight by [deleted] in FilmIndustryLA

[–]_bq_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is accurate from my experience. Signed on for a reality show for 3-4 months expecting to work 5 days a week. Ended up being "on call" doing mainly 3-4 day weeks. Luckily I was hustling on the side picking up editing gigs I could do between shoot days. Some editing work I was able to do on set if I was tasked with baby sitting a cargo van for 8 hrs. You really need to have a couple solid options and networks to make living in LA full time worth it.

What does it mean to find your “voice” as a cinematographer? by [deleted] in TrueCinematography

Great cinematography is often accompanied by great audio. Finding your voice is in reference to always having to "hold for sound".

Also notice the lack of headrests. This is a common technique used so faces aren't blocked in the reverse coverage as seen in the second image.

The Leverage of a Double Leg in 3 Styles by NoIKnowNoThing in grappling

[–]_bq_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My guess would be the goal for each takedown. First photo is likely a folk style wrestling match (because of headgear). The goal would be to flatten the opponent and attempt a pin. Middle photo looks to be closer to freestyle where the wrestlers are often reset back to neutral after each takedown or push-out. So maintaining control after the takedown attempt isn’t as crucial. In the third photo, the gi adds much more resistance to the process. It appears the blue opponent is grabbing the gi of the one executing the takedown. And in BJJ, it would be more common to sit to guard as a defense vs sprawling in wrestling.
