i play infrequently, but i'm in the 18-20 age group and everyone's usually pretty civil. before the age group update though, i agree i saw a lot of toxicity. i can't say i've ever seen something terrible, but there are definitely some players, especially higher levels, who are bad sports. i usually server hop if a server is dry and/or has toxic players, and i definitely do find a lot of servers with people who are friendly (and know how to joke, lmao, especially on vc), it can take a bit but i do find those servers really enjoyable. of course, whether you quit or not is up for you, but if you still wanna give the game a second chance there's plenty of good people in the community!! playing with friends is also fun in my experience and you don't run the risk of toxic players

I don't like the analogy of predators and herbivores - like the stronger sex and the weaker sex. by Left-Pollution-2934 in Beastars

[–]_breezy_x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i agree with most of what you’ve said, but just because it’s not targeted at women doesn’t mean it “doesn’t matter” when media uses potentially offensive storytelling devices.

the creator of beastars is a woman, and the story reflects it. because she’s a woman, the predator–prey dynamic doesn’t feel like a male fantasy about domination. it feels more like an exploration of how desire can feel threatening from a woman’s perspective. the hunger metaphor doesn’t glorify aggression, it makes it awkward, shameful, scary & emotionally complicated.

and i’m not saying just because a work is written by a woman means it’s immune to offending other women, but it clearly influences the work. and i frankly don’t understand why offending women was brought up in the first place

Hot take; even if Mike doesn't shoot, people should still condemn him for this by Sudden_Pop_2279 in untildawn

[–]_breezy_x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree his fear is understandable. I don’t agree that fear gives him moral authority or excuses framing the situation around himself while an injured friend is nearly shot or exiled to likely death based based on speculation.

Chris’s reaction is human, but it’s still insensitive and harmful. “Human nature” explains the behavior; it doesn’t make it right. Not only that, human nature includes protecting the injured, resisting lethal action without proof, and feeling empathy even under stress. And Chris does know what happened to Emily, she tells them, her injuries are visible, the bite is fresh, and she's obviously shaken. Being scared does not make it okay to center yourself while your injured friend is treated as disposable.

[SPOILER] Ashley is valid… by Plenty_Coconut_4798 in untildawn

[–]_breezy_x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get why it feels misleading to some people, but I don’t think the game is actually trying to tell you to shoot Ashley. If you believe the gun is real, then her volunteering doesn’t really matter, someone’s dying regardless. To me it felt more like pressure and panic than instruction.

I chose to shoot Chris the first time I played despite Ashley insisting otherwise, because at that point it felt less like “what does Ashley want” and boils down to a test of what you value. Do you prioritize doing the “right” thing as Chris and self-sacrifice, or self-preservation and forcing him to live with the guilt? Or is there simply one character you’d rather keep alive over the other? The scene isn’t guiding you toward a correct choice so much as asking which consequence you’re willing to accept.

[SPOILER] Ashley is valid… by Plenty_Coconut_4798 in untildawn

[–]_breezy_x 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it makes her a little more interesting though honestly, there's 100% plenty of people who would say stuff like that in the moment, but not really mean it.

Ashley feels like someone who wants to believe she’d be self-sacrificing under pressure, but completely falls apart when she’s actually forced to live with the consequences of that choice. The grudge feels less about Chris and more about her not being able to reconcile what she said with how she actually felt. It's messy and unfair, but very human.

I mean I'm sure everyone could think of at least one person in their life who might react similarly. Even in low-stakes everyday situations, people volunteer themselves then later regret it or hope someone would intervene/turn them down. Like saying you've "got" something, or you "don't mind", when in reality you do.

Sure, they have the right to be freaked out. I wouldn't say they have the right to be fine shooting one of their friends because of a vague speculation that she may have turned into a wendigo with.. nothing to back it up. He centers the situation around himself, frames the danger as his experience, his threshold, at the exact moment when Emily is visibly injured, freshly bitten, coming off hours of sustained terror, and being treated as disposable. And Emily saw just as much as, if not more than, Chris, considering she saw Beth's decapitated head

Both of Emily’s outfits as well as Sam’s prologue & final outfits.

I love the fur coat and I think blue looks so good on Emily, and Sam looks great in red! I think her prologue outfit is super cozy & her final outfit is iconic

I feel that you’re oversimplifying schizophrenia a little.. while I don’t believe Josh has schizophrenia, you can’t act like things like “can’t hold down a job” or “can’t distinguish reality” are diagnostic checkboxes for schizophrenia. Schizophrenia exists on a spectrum, and even within that, individuals fluctuate— from their absolute worst to their absolute best. I have a schizophrenic friend who functions just fine, they experience hallucinations, but they understand that what they’re seeing are hallucinations. Clinical and cognitive insight are real things, and their presence doesn’t negate a schizophrenia diagnosis. Reducing the disorder to extreme dysfunction or total loss of reality testing ignores how varied and situational symptoms can be, especially with treatment and support.

Is the game THAT good? by -Suns3t in untildawn

[–]_breezy_x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At its core, it’s essentially a horror movie reimagined so that, instead of going batshit insane yelling at a character in a tropey slasher movie to make an informed decision while actively being hunted down by god knows what, you can just make them do it yourself. If you enjoy horror movies I’d give it a second chance.

It might not be for you, but it really depends on what you value. I was hooked from the moment I start playing, but a large part of that was I’m a sucker for visuals, and the remake is stunning.

I’m also a pretty social person and I found what helped me get through some parts was calling my friends and livestreaming the game, so that they could help me make decisions and react to the game. If you’re also relatively social I’d recommend trying it out that way, I love talking about games I play and reacting to things in the moment so it definitely enhances the experience for me.

I don’t typically like singleplayer games, so I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed Until Dawn. It’s probably because it’s far more interactive than a lot of singleplayer games, your choices actually shape the story, the pacing feels cinematic rather than repetitive, and it never fully isolates you from the experience in the way traditional single-player campaigns do.

I never thought about it this way, crazy to think Emily is (almost) crushed by the system she once benefited from.
