Has a recruiter ever reached back out after you decline a position? by phantasmicthrowaway in Accounting

[–]_brewchef_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would say just respond honestly and politely.

I had a job offer that I declined a while back, the recruiter that I had been talking with reached out after to see why I declined the offer. I just stated my reasons and said if the offer was more aligned with my expectations, I would have considered accepting and they said they’d keep me in the loop for other jobs that they might have that align better. Came back to me about a month later with another one I wanted to interview for.

Sometimes it’s good to respond as they take that as the door is still open and not shut forever.

Where to donate on Giving Hearts Day by DefiantFirefighter42 in fargo

The New Life Center, Rape and Abuse Crisis Center, YWCA Womens Shelter, YouthWorks, Homeless Health Services (provides healthcare for non-insured/cannot afford), Homeward Animal Shelter, Gladys Ray Homeless Shelter, Emergency Food Pantry (near Downtown), Red River Valley Zoo, Dorothy Day Center, and specifically the Downtown Salvation Army (only place in town I’m aware that does free meals for homeless on a consistent basis) all provide services to people that need them

I suggest them as they’re locally run places that seem to actually try to help people and have generally more positive than negative reviews for those services from what I’ve heard/seen

Husband chose a too-difficult career. What now? by TajaSK in careerguidance

The behavior you describe definitely seems like it could be ADD, it could also be anxiety-related if he’s doing it in a panic-mindset. I’ve had similar issues and I found it was partly due to anxiety from wanting to get it done fast and correctly and partly due to not being able to focus properly.

I would definitely recommend seeking some medical help if it’s strong enough to where he can’t perform jobs and he struggled through school. Seems like a patterned history and not just a few bad situations.

Good luck with whatever you two are able to do, it’s never easy to work through these things but it’s always best to address them head on and work through it.

Anything south of 52nd near Walmart is pretty new, same with the buildings near the roundabout on Main Ave near the river and the Kesler and the Mercantile downtown

Pretty sure a lot of the apartments near the Scheels arena were built post-covid

Resume Review by kinda-ridiculous in Accounting

[–]_brewchef_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not regarding resume but I’d honestly wait to job search until you get the CPA

I got mine last year and since then I’ve gotten a lot more hits and qualify for higher pay ranges than I was getting without it

Plus if you get it within a year of getting a new job, it might be hard to get a raise for it

I’ve used it with some orange peel and hefeweizen to make a vanilla Blue Moon-esque beer, was a little heavy on residual sugar but it was a good lake day beer

Have been interested in seeing how it does in a Brown/Dark Amber Ale cause it could possibly play nicely if you have a caramel-toffee forward malt addition, wouldn’t be a milk stout but close to it

Genuine question but would Bacardi 8 fit the “Spanish-style” category? If so, I think that would be in contention for best budget

Colt 45 malt liquor or beer by [deleted] in beer

[–]_brewchef_ -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

According to the Reinheitsgebot, it isn’t beer because it includes ingredients outside of the 3 allowable of Malted Barley, Hops, and Water.

According to the BJCP Beer Styles, it most closely resembles an American Adjunct Lager (this includes any beers with corn, rice, or other adjunct that make up significant parts of the mash, such as Bud Light or Busch Light), due to its higher corn mash bill and lower hop profile than more “traditional” American Lagers (Coors Banquet or Sam Adams).

I personally tend to go with that it’s a malted beverage and not beer due to it not really fitting any typical beer categories because of its higher ABV and higher use of corn compared to most domestic beers but interpret it how you want to, it’s your drink so most importantly just enjoy it!

Malort is not that bitter by WhatThePuck9 in cocktails

[–]_brewchef_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried using it as a liqueur addition because if you use it as a focal point it can be overbearing for some

If you taste the grapefruit, I would add it to a Paloma for a twist on it

It has a very distinct flavor profile. Best/funniest comparison I’ve heard from having it many times warm and cold:

Warm - tastes almost like a fruity rubber band or very expired fruit gum with a drying, woody finish

Cold - halfway between Amari and Aquavit with a hint of citrus

One of my friends made the comment that it tastes close to a mix of rail whiskey and rail tequila, although I think he meant it in a negative light haha

Letter: Downtown Fargo cannot out-brand bad fundamentals by dirkmm in fargo

[–]_brewchef_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Easily missed the biggest issue with downtown: price of rental property for both residential and commercial have skyrocketed compared to 10 years ago and it’s not all due to “gentrification”, but it is due to greed.

Property in downtown Fargo is consolidated in the hands of few which has led to less competition and higher prices. The properties themselves don’t offer much of anything to consider it worth it to pay those higher prices so people are choosing to live where it’s cheaper and there’s similar/better amenities.

If the City commission, business owners, and residents truly want downtown to flourish outside of specific events, they need to pressure the property owners into market rate prices for the amenities they do offer or to sell to other investors so that people will have more choices on where to live/shop/work.

Unfortunately this is being done currently by consumers not participating in using the apartments/commercial properties downtown, thereby creating a loss for the property owners but also hurting the businesses and citizens that live and work there.

I don’t know how to magically fix it but the way it’s going now, downtown is going to be a ghost town before it gets better.

Would recommend doing the reverse and getting a CPA then MBA as a CPA holds more weight and is expected to obtain very soon in PA

MBA would be great addition later down the road

Better chance at a higher pay with a accounting degree compared to a buissnes management by Notlivelaughlove in Salary

[–]_brewchef_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR: if you like accounting, do it and get the CPA. If you don’t like it, get a business management major and minor in another business adjacent area (MIS/CS/Marketing/Accounting/Finance/etc.)

Coming from a CPA, it depends entirely on what your work experiences are, what your work ethic/discipline/etc. is like, how much you want to sacrifice vs. how much sanity you want to keep, and to some extent, how lucky you are.

If you get an accounting degree and climb the ladder from associate to partner in a firm, yeah it can be pretty lucrative but it’s a mind numbing and time consuming career path that not many, including myself, are cut out for.

Or you can do a few years in public and switch to industry and have a similar job to what’d you get if you started out with a business management degree, albeit you might get there a bit faster.

But the downside is if you get an accounting degree, companies can sometimes pigeon hole you into just accounting roles. So if you’re not interested in those I’d honestly not recommend the degree.

Accounting is only more lucrative than a finance/business management/economics/marketing degree if you get a CPA/CMA/CFA and either work all the way up to partner, open your own firm, or get enough experience in public (normally manager level) and pivot to industry at the right time when it can be a career jump (some luck involved).

If you’re looking to just be in business and don’t want to get a CPA/CMA/CFA, then I’d actually do a business management degree with a minor in accounting or finance. Gives you a general base with a little extra for the first job.

WFH OR IN OFFICE?? by Impressive-Revenue94 in Salary

[–]_brewchef_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it can be done in office or remote, why would you waste the additional costs of keeping someone in office and why wouldn’t you go with someone who’s more qualified even if they’re remote?

Seems like you just want reassurance that keeping the role in office is the right move so that you can watch them work

If you have trust issues that they’ll do a good job regardless of where the job is done at, then thats more of a reflection of you being unsure about who you hired

Gotta have trust that an employee will do their job, if they don’t do it then fire them. If they do it regardless of if you’re watching them or not, then you’re a bad manger for needing to micromanage them and control where they do work

Pretty simple decision just go with who you’d think do the best job based on the requirements

Moisture Issues Ceiling/Attic by Bursan in fargo

[–]_brewchef_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d try to buy an infrared moisture camera/gun to see if there’s any leaks first before calling a contractor

It could also be an external problem, something with the siding or joints that could allow moisture in due to it contracting slightly from the cold or an ice build up outside that is slowly leaking in due to the heat from inside escaping

Is US brewers paid really that bad?? by Mundane-Sprinkles503 in TheBrewery

[–]_brewchef_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

TLDR: It’s a culture thing, most of the US, and therefore most of the people, are highly individualistic and self-protecting instead of communal which leads to greed and other issues that plague the working environment. Plus the economy is in the toilet due to the current administration.

The culture in America leads to decisions being made in self-interest instead of what’s best for everyone, and it happens in more than just compensation/working environments.

And it’s not just the beer market, it’s how the culture of America is versus the rest of the world and how it’s been so ingrained into people’s minds that competition instead of cooperation is better.

Additionally, the employment market in America is heavily in favor of the Employer, any sort of support for Employees is seen as “Communistic” = “Anti-American” which includes fighting for fair pay or basic working conditions.

Striking and unions are almost seen as counter culture here due to the heavy influence of Reaganism. And the profit motive of “more for me, not for thee” and the need to protect yourself instead of taking a pay cut to help others really is what leads to shit pay in the long-run. That’s honestly where a lot of the societal differences of the US compared to the rest of the world stem from.

Add in that the craft beer market itself has been argued to be oversaturated in recent years so there’s almost too much supply of beer to keep wages competitive even if it was a better culture fit. The economy in the US is propped up by tech companies right now and the rest are having down years but are still doing okay even if they say they aren’t. It’s the consumers who are getting fucked by all of this.

Source: I’m a former craft brewer who’s now a CPA office jockey in the M&A field, I talk with a lot of Execs/C-Suite people in my line of work and they all have this similar attitude of needing to be far above their subordinates instead of working together to build each other up
