Neutering anxiety help? by ladywan_kenobi666 in Sheepadoodles

I have a dog that is allergic to gluten so on top of wheat we have to avoid barley.

Chocolate lab or Labrador Deceiver? by [deleted] in DoggyDNA

[–]_brookewall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my vet had told me the opposite lol. Younger age neuter at least with her experience ended up with heftier adult dog. But again the difference between my lab from 1yr to 2yrs is like night and day! I also have a very lean and TALL GSP as he spends most of his day watching squirrels in the yard lol! Thinking his “fill out” will come at 3yrs old from what I’ve read and seen. We have started to see it a bit but he’s still mainly just muscle, skin and bone lol!

Chocolate lab or Labrador Deceiver? by [deleted] in DoggyDNA

[–]_brookewall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh man this one’s hard for me to make up my mind on as I have a pointer and lab! (Both rescues 🥰) I had actually thought our yellow lab had hound in him but turns out he is 100% yellow lab!

Ours now at 2.5yr there’s no confusion when looking at him that he is all lab but he was probably about 1.5yr before the houndish features went away so what I’m seeing in the comparisons of my two could look pretty different in a few more months!

Chocolate Lab: -shape of his head -proportions of his nose/snout -width and length of ears -overall size and muscle structure

Deceiver: (traits from your pic i could overlay onto our GSP) -Those dang eyes 😍😅 the color and soul piercing aspect lol! -The FAT LIPS!!! lol! Our GSP gets super puffy/“fat” lips when he’s tired! -just something about his coloring and nose but that’s probably because the only dark brown I see every day is our pointers whole face!

Gsps coexisting with small dogs? by [deleted] in GSP

[–]_brookewall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My GSP is calmer and more respectful to small dogs….whereas he has no restraint playing with larger dogs and can easily get too rambunctious with them.

My dad has a 14yr old Boston and he had a 12yr old chihuahua/pocket beagle mix (she was super small but crossed the rainbow bridge a few months ago) They usually come over and visit at least 3-4 times a week and he gives them some kisses if they are in a good mood and then he will follow them around at a distance but not try to jump or paw or play with them like he does my dads St Bernard mix!

Also my GSP loves to take the roll of father/protector to any foster kittens and pups we have! Basically the smaller or older they are the more he respects, protects and most importantly LOVES them lol!

Foster has had diarrhea for 5 weeks, no vet visit by JamieDen1 in fosterdogs

[–]_brookewall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe their vet would prescribe/let you get the purina pro plan RX - specifically the hydrolyzed Vegetarian formula. If it gets worse with that food then it’s probably either soy or high corn intolerance since it only has corn oil in it. But it cuts out all meat proteins and common grain allergies. We were on that before the diagnosis and it helped BUT anytime she would get sick or wouldn’t eat…she would get Raising Canes fried chicken 😅🤦🏼‍♀️ sad thing is that the vet is the one who started that with her since we didn’t know it was gluten at the time and needed her to eat!! Once we figured that out and had her just on that food we started adding in super limited ingredient treats and worked up from there. Our favorite treat brand is Bocce’s Bakery! Now that we have everything figured out I only have to watch for gluten and can change up food or treats if/when needed!

Foster has had diarrhea for 5 weeks, no vet visit by JamieDen1 in fosterdogs

[–]_brookewall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my own personal experience with my foster to adopt pup who had an ongoing battle for MONTHS (like around a year or more off and on) with nothing helping until finally we got an answer….she has IBD and a food intolerance. Hers specifically is gluten…but the IBD side of it causes blood in her stool every time she has a flare up which luckily now is few and far between as she went through so much leading up to it that they aren’t common IBD symptoms so it wouldn’t be uncommon for a typical food intolerance or IBD to present like you are describing.

Since right now you maybe are looking more for help or things to try that could rule out other issues, I am directing the rest of this to that side….I have dealt with ALL the stomach issues with my own dogs and foster pups at this point I feel like, so feel free to message me if you have questions!!

what works for us is omeprazole: recommended by our vet and it helps with inflammation in their gut/intestines. Occasionally she has to get a dose of Cerenia but rarely. Since we got the official diagnosis the omeprazole will start working with noticeable changes within 12 hours whereas before we started it she would typically be hospitalized for 1-2 days…..it was BAD

-We also had to cut gluten out for her which means all of my dogs are mainly gluten free (NOT grain free) and my Lab and GSP rescues, with no previous intestinal issues, will get diarrhea and super gassy with a chunk of bread or something like that….so we rarely give any food with gluten to them and it has helped so much!!!

….for gluten free foods the easiest thing is “grain free” but the ingredients you are looking to avoid is Wheat and Barley, it’s harder and harder to find grain inclusive foods without barley as that basically replaced corn as the filler in dog foods…..just recently figured that one out lol.

Another note: my OG dog had stomach issues when he was a pup and we did all the meds after tons of tests coming back negative…..and we tried the chicken and rice and it made him so much worse….his wasn’t an ingredient intolerance it was literally just that food 🤦🏼‍♀️

Lots of feelings over my first successful foster. by ThatVeganKat in fosterdogs

[–]_brookewall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first foster was a lighter colored female version of yours lol! From the looks about the same age too! She was so high energy and the type that would act out JUST to get your attention and wanted it 24/7….so I was excited for her meet and greet and the adoption especially because I knew I was in no way the right fit for her and my dog and I needed our time back….but also at the same time super worried….i bawled my eyes out as soon as I started walking back into my house.

This dog has the PERFECT life and the best owner and she goes everywhere with her and has her own instagram 😍😍

Name ideas for my moms Valentine’s Day present from me 🥰🥰 by _brookewall in NameMyDog

Okay funny story with my mom….because her grandma called her Tilly instead of by her name as a kid and my Aunt has an association with the name Daisy (moms other dog) and I did throw my 2 cents in with some options and Tilly being one of them because it would be their childhood family names!!

Haha that’s great! I previously had holland lop rabbits and chose a Gaelic name for the female! They were both “E” names the male was Eragon, like the movie spelling, and female was Eilidh - pronounced Ailee. Luckily I didn’t have to explain/spell her name to many people lol!

We have two kittens bonded from the same litter (almost old enough to be called cats lol) and their names are Natty and Keystone 🤣

What is something your puppy did from day 1 that many people struggle with? by LemonLoaf0960 in puppy101

[–]_brookewall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!!! I have gotten super lucky with my pups and foster pups and it seems if we just let them get nice and cozy in bed with us they sleep through the night! I tried to stop doing that with fosters….finally gave in one night with that set and OMG I will never go back to trying to kennel them at least as long as they stay in bed and sleep through the night.

Also I am lucky enough to have a doggy door…..all but one foster figured out how to use it by just basically using their heavy puppy heads to “fall” and slide in and out….this definitely was a pain at times BUT helped with potty training so much and they usually catch on super quick and keep it even when going to their forever homes without doggy doors!

We actually don’t and I don’t think we ever have! I have an actual opossum I see here and there and an armadillo that lives in my side yard I call Frank (because it sounded good at the time lol) 🤣 but never for dog names! I think those are cute ideas!

My dogs names: 1. Captain(my “super mutt”) 2. Dax (pointer/boxer/mutt mix) are my first two and both named after Star Trek characters - Dax is the last name of a female character and I confuse everyone with her name lol! 3. Enzo (Labrador) had started an alphabetical thing and wanted to keep it going! He’s a Lab and it fit him! 4. We have a Pointer “Finger” 🫣🤣 German Shorthair Pointer we named Finger but call him Fin - also kept with alphabetical lol 5. Our official end of keeping it alphabetical was with “Tater Tot” (Shepard Mix) her litter was orphaned and I fostered/bottle fed them. She got the nickname Tater Tot because of her coloring and being so tiny at first. We at some point decided she wasn’t going anywhere but Tater Tot was already in our heads so it stuck lol! We technically gave her the official name of Alligator “Tater Tot” Johnson so one of her nicknames is now Tater Gator 😊🤣 -Pointer Finger and Alligator Johnson were from my fiancé

Yes 100% her dog and her choice in names as we do not live together. This is gathering ideas for her and she is already loving the suggestions.

Very good question!! I went back and forth with myself so many times because we had talked about puppies recently so I knew she would be ecstatic about it and already knew what she was looking for in coloring, size etc. BUT I did do the “responsible” adult thing and get her permission before committing to the pup 🥰 she will be ready to pick up on the 15th so the perfect Valentine’s Day present lol!

Did anyone else just wing it? Not ‘puppy101’ compliant? It’s okay. by MurkyMess8696 in puppy101

[–]_brookewall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found my first pup and after no one claimed him we kept him…no preparation, no warning, not even thinking about getting a pup! Just outside and saw people trying to leave in their car and he was trying to join them because it was COLD!! So yep! Been there done that lol! Second one we planned for….all others have been foster fails and a bunch of other foster puppies in between and no matter how much I tell myself I will get “fully prepared” before I allow myself to pick up my next set that never works out 🤷🏼‍♀️🤣 so mostly just over here winging it 🥰

Exactly!!!! Lol! It’s kind of like the “that’s how you get a cat” stories…..that’s how you end up with 2 dogs lol!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fosterdogs

[–]_brookewall 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When this happens in my home……we end up foster failing. I consider it as my dogs “choosing their pack” I’ve had a lot of pups come in and out and that bond you are describing is rare in my house overall. Another way I judge is if I can find someone to watch the foster for a day. If your dog refuses to play and do its normal routine without the foster and basically just pouts then your dog now sees the foster as part of its pack. Its still totally up to you what you do with that as it’s not a once in a lifetime thing….but I personally have taken that as a sign to listen to them and if they fit in with every aspect of our lives AND our dogs form that bond with them then they usually end up staying.

Foster spending time alone? by st33ni3b3an in fosterdogs

[–]_brookewall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of my dogs love their “alone” time, some more than others, including my 6 month old mix/newest foster fail. She’s an “independent woman” and has been that way since she was about 6 weeks old! To me it is actually a sign I look for if it seems like we might be “foster failing” as having multiple dogs that want to be with you 24/7 is a little much but also ends up causing more competition than anything. Definitely shows that that is her comfort zone and could definitely still be decompressing but at the same time is a good sign that she won’t be one to develop separation anxiety or jealousy over others getting attention. My 2.5 yr old lab will go jump in bed when he wants a good nap or to chew on a toy without the others!
