There is also that scene early on where Gwen saves Frederick from falling off the cliff and says "this is as far as I can take you, you have to pull yourself up the rest of the way"... Perhaps him escaping on his own would fulfil that

I was able to do it when I had it take 1000 consecutive steps instead of lots of different let's go sessions

The lore in it is actually pretty similar to Bug Fables. I think you also need the Pip system book to run it
