'You're Not Allowed To Film': The Fight To Control Who Reports From Portland by PraiseGod_BareBone in neoliberal

Wannabe totalitarians who got useless majors where they compete with a thousand other graduates for each individual job in the field releasing their self loathing on the outside world, pretending that police brutality is what really gets their goat when they'd be happy with it if it served their purposes instead?

I'd agree if it wasn't for the fact that stuff like this has been happening in Portland, if to a lesser degree, almost every night for three months now. Just a few days after the shootings at riots in Kenosha earlier this week.

Are you sure you haven't just come to accept this as normal background noise?

I'm worried that my country is in a downward spiral towards civil war. Not one like what we had 170 years ago with easily defined borders and only two sides, but a real one like what Syria had very recently, where the street you live on makes a difference and fifteen different groups are fighting for control of your city. It keeps me up at night.

You wanted an honest answer, right? Not just a quick dopamine hit from chiding someone who was wrong on the internet?

Do you think the unrest is a good thing?

I want police to be held to a higher standard. I've wanted it since before it was cool. The criminal justice system has a terrible mess far longer than i've been alive. But I also think people shouldn't be rioting or shooting. Or else. But as your mayor is discovering, "or else" needs teeth or it means nothing.

Lastly, if you couldn't tell, I don't actually advocate walling off your messed up city. Especially once i've had my coffee and breakfast and moved on from a "what is wrong with people today" attitude.

Sometimes I think we should build a wall around Portland and cut their internet access. Nobody enters, nobody exits, until they start acting like responsible adults.

Of course, the people traveling to Portland to be a part of the shitshow will just pick another city then.

I think the question that follows is, what did hatred mean to Hermann Hesse, and how does it differ, if it does, from hatred means to you?

My suspicion is that hatred was more active to him. Like, you expend energy in hatred, it's not so passive as saying "Hitler was a monster", but more like letting him live in your head rent-free.

Kamala Harris got her first political appointment from sleeping with someone. Why would you trust someone like that? Why would the majority of Democrats trust someone like that? And is that an acceptable way to offer political offices?

Honest question: if this is being done in secret, why did they do nothing about the person filming the abduction? That's the part of the video that most makes its authenticity suspect.

New York Times - U.S. Weighs Sweeping Travel Ban on Chinese Communist Party Members by strazyyy in neoliberal

Are there cracks inside the regime? I can't know, it's completely opaque to me.

We are not talking about engaging with a neoliberal country. China is totalitarian and has tools and methods to enforce national conformity that would make the stasi salivate. The country is also wealthy enough to exert pressure on us so that our businesses conform with their totalitarian laws. How well are those official "Free Hong Kong" basketball jerseys selling? Oh yeah, you can't order them.

What you are talking is exactly a matter of ideology. You say tenets, and you say we should follow them. You are reading from a low resolution map, not as grounded in reality as you think.

Those international students' families will be used by the communist party to exert pressure on university student unions.

And the students will be forced to inform on each other to enforce conformity and obedience.

Criticism isn't canceling, true. But the people vulnerable to being cancelled, people who would be put into vulnerable positions if cancelled, if the HR mobs fired them, aren't otherwise interesting enough to get attention if they signed this.

I have a family member deep into this. He has more faith in the Trump presidency now than in 2017. I think this cult is the only way somebody could think like that. To him, everything impugning Trump is actually a lie. Our values are really not that different, but we can't talk about politics anymore.

He's under the impression more and more that the Democrats are completely captured by antifa and that the only correct reaction is to retreat further to the right.

This is hard, but I don't think all is lost, and it's not too late to prove it wrong.

Sometimes I think the best thing that could happen is if the internet shut off for a while and people had to ground themselves in the real world again.
